Hi All!

Here’s this week’s PlayStation Store Comics update. It’s a huge update once again with 69 comics, and a lot of highlights.

5100070908_c283fe1519.jpg

Kicking it off, we have a treat from Marvel with the adaptation of Raymond E. Feist’s acclaimed fantasy saga Magician. Starting with Magician: Apprentice #1-6. These first six issues introduce young orphan Pug and follow his coming of age in the increasingly troubled world of Midkemia – a gripping story that will see our hero and his friend Tomas swept up into their world’s conflict with some terrible consequences.

Also in this week is DC (Wildstorm)’s Red. In this Warren Ellis’ created series we meet Paul Moses, a retired CIA agent who wants to put his past behind him and live in complete peace. But he knows too much, and his peaceful retirement is to come to an end one way or another when a three-man hit team knocks on his door. Also out are three more issues based on the freshly released movie: Red: Franck, Red: Joe and Red: Victoria. Take your pick!

Next up is the very topical Trick’r Treat, adapted from the dark comedy/horror movie of the same name. This anthology of four Halloween-related scary stories has vicious killers, zombies, demons and werewolves – all you need for the Halloween weekend! Parts #1 and #2 are available today and the two others will be coming very soon.

We’re also delighted to bring you Ratchet & Clank #1, adapted from the franchise we all know and love. With Dr. Nefarious defeated and the universe safe, galactic heroes Ratchet and Clank return to the Solana galaxy for some well-earned rest and relaxation… Or so they think! A nice adaptation and a must for the fans of the game series.

We also have something for True Blood fans with True Blood #4, more Batman, Wonder Woman and Y: The Last Man for those who have been asking for these comics, and one extra treat for gamers with Dragon Age #4.

Here is the full list:

Minecraft maestro Markus Persson recently updated his blog with a progress report on his new studio, Mojang Specifications, and news about the upcoming Halloween update for the game. He notes that Mojang has found a building and now includes six employees: three programmers, a pixel artist, a CEO and a business developer.

As for the Halloween update, Persson says it will include six new block types, five of which have "unique abilities." There will also be a new monster, "a new dimension" and portals. Persson explained later in a tweet that these portals will eventually be able to link between different Minecraft servers, though this functionality won't be implemented anytime soon.

So, can monsters use portals? If so, we totally would not build a transdimensional monster funnel leading directly inside of another player's meticulously crafted fortress. So, feel free to invite us to a game and leave us alone in the back room for a few minutes ... okay?

In the words of designer Sandy Lockie, Bizarre Creations has "a fantastic pedigree" when it comes to racing games -- "just such a good fit for a Bond game." Lockie himself also has a fantastic pedigree for rad hair. Scraggly chin beard? That too.

I’ve been invited here today to let everyone know about the Red Faction: Battlegrounds Beta currently in progress, exclusively on PSN. For the past two weeks, PlayStation Plus members have been battling it out and having a blast in THQ Digital UK’s new twin-stick vehicular combat game. Within the beta, there are a handful of addicting single-player challenges, which are great training opportunities for multiplayer, featuring four-player combat both online and on your couch.

The past two weeks have been great, but we want to get even more feedback. We’re not only extending the beta for Red Faction: Battlegrounds an extra week until October 26th, but Sony Computer Entertainment is giving out 1,000 more keys to PlayStation Plus members! Make sure to check your e-mail / PSN mailbox to find out if you’ve been accepted and download the client.

We have two small requests for everyone participating in the beta. First, we’re trying to pack the servers to their limit, so please try to connect to the “Online” mode during the following times each day. While you’re at it, bring your friends!

6-8 PM Pacific Time / 7-9 PM Mountain Time / 8-10 PM Central Time / 9-11 PM Eastern Time

Second, please spend a few minutes between sessions and give us your feedback on Red Faction: Battlegrounds. We want to know what you liked, any bugs you ran into, and even what you were not happy with. You can leave feedback on the official PlayStation forums, or on the official Red Faction Community Site, and each comment will result in a greater overall experience.

Thanks again to everyone participating and stay tuned for the full release of Red Faction: Battlegrounds next year!

Okay, if the 360/PS3 version has all the same content as the Wii one, but with online added, I don’t think the blanket price makes sense. Either the 360/PS3 versions should be $10 higher, or the Wii one $10 lower. I love NBA Jam on Wii, but this whole situation still makes me [...]

Sure, we may not have the special Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary Wii or DSi XL, or the Super Mario All-Stars re-release, but Europe and Japan don't have these pins -- or this screensaver.

The newest items in the Club Nintendo shop are these four commemorative Mario pins, each shipping in early November for a steep 450 Coins -- which means you can go ahead and forget about collecting them all. On the other end of the price scale is a new Mario screensaver, featuring footage from games throughout the series, which you can download for 10 Coins. Compared to the pins, it's a bargain! But it's also a screensaver.

Nintendo, why do you say you're gonna do cool things and then shit all over it?

Even the All Stars game doesn't sound good anymore ever since it was announced as the same thing we bought for the SNES years ago. The least they could've done is toss in SMW, Yoshi's Island, and SM64.

Following a hiring surge in late July for an apparent "action" project, SCE Studio Liverpool is once again in need of a senior designer with "an encyclopedic knowledge of games," only this time with an "especially racing" kind of intelligence. Said know-it-all should have put this in-brained database to good use, too, and must have "shipped at least one successful racing title within a senior design role."
According to GamesRadar, an earlier version of the job listing was more candid, describing the position as one in which the new hire would "work with a talented and experienced team on a high profile, futuristic racing franchise." Though it's unclear what prompted the edit (was that a spoiler?), Studio Liverpool's newest designer will likely be working on the WipEout franchise.

Earlier this year, Studio Liverpool underwent a drastic reduction in size, with reportedly half of all staff laid off. Shortly before the restructuring, Sony confirmed that a number of projects within the studio had been canceled. Studio Liverpool's last significant release was the WipEout HD add-on "Fury" in mid-2009 -- unless you count this summer's grand opening of the "WipEout Museum" ... in PlayStation Home.

There are plenty of reasons artists license their music for a rhythm game. There's money, certainly, and notoriety. But what about scorn? For Billy Joel, it was more than enough reason to license a dozen or so of his songs to Rock Band 3. Here's his account from USA Today:"I've never allowed my music to be used in a game before," but an Entertainment Weekly review of NBC's The Office changed his mind. Alluding to an episode in which characters mention a Rock Band featuring Billy Joel, "the critic wrote something like, 'God forbid that ever should happen.' So I called my people and said, 'Get me (on) that Rock Band game.' Then I wrote the critic, saying that every time I get a check, I'll give him a little nod."
We're assuming the songs will cost money, but we'd submit that reading the above story and knowing we'll never do anything remotely that cool is a dear enough price to pay.

Microsoft is renaming its (free) Xbox Live Silver service to "Xbox Live Free Membership," according to a tweet from European community manager Graeme Boyd. This comes alongside the refreshed Xbox.com and, of course, the Xbox Live Gold price hike, as part of an apparent pre-Kinect relaunch of the Xbox's online presence.

The new name no longer emphasizes Silver's status as subordinate to Gold, but rather highlights the advantage of that level of membership -- the fact that it's free. In a followup tweet, Boyd clarified that the feature set for Silver won't change and neither will the name for the paid membership. If you're Gold now, you'll stay gold.
