Hello! I’m Josh Olin (aka JD_2020), and thank you for the opportunity to highlight some of the features that Call of Duty: Black Ops will deliver to PS3 fans when it launches on November 9th. A number of these features are ones that I think the community has been wanting for a long time, which is why we’ve worked really hard to deliver. So let’s get started!

Multiplayer Online Split-Screen Support

Let’s get started with what I believe is the most unknown, yet confirmed, aspect to Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer – the online split-screen support we’ve re-introduced to the franchise!

The Facts:

  • You can connect a second controller and bring a guest online (i.e. “JD_2020” & “JD_2020(1)”).
  • Guests can rank up, earn unlocks, etc – all guest progress goes away once signed out.
  • You can bring a second, full PSN account online!
  • Both players with full PSN ID’s can rank up while playing together in split-screen, as if on two separate consoles.
Custom Games Editor

Allow me to introduce the Black Ops Custom Games Editor! Private matches have never been this customizable. Players will have the ability to structure their games at all new levels of granularity. From variables as simple as Time Limit and Score Limit, or as deep as which weapons, Perks, and gear are available. You want a Pistols Only match? Make one! No longer do custom game modes rely on the “honor system.”

Furthermore, any Custom Game you create and configure can be placed in your File Share, for friends and the community to browse, download, and enjoy. You just might create the most addictive new game mode of all time from the comfort of your own living room!

In-Game Friends List

We’ve integrated a built-in Friends List into the in game user interface. You’ll be able to browse Recent Players, Friends, navigate their File Shares, Recent Games, Combat Records – all within this in-game menu system designed to streamline the social process within the game. Sending game invites and joining Friends’ games has never been simpler than in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Regional Matchmaking & Party Privacy

Call of Duty: Black Ops will support regional matchmaking filters on a global scale. So, no matter where you’re at in the world, you will have the ability to specify whether you want to match with players from other geographical regions, or only those local to you. This will make communication and lag a much less intrusive variable on your gameplay experience.

Additionally, given Black Ops will support joining games in progress via an even simpler built-in in-game Friends List interface, we’ll allow a Party leader to lock down his lobby to Invite Only, Friends Only, or even Close it altogether if he wants to be in complete control over who enters and exits the Party Lobby.

Emblems Do NOT Reset with Prestige

This one is pretty cut-and-dried. A frequently asked question is, “Will my kickass emblem I spent hours perfecting be lost when I prestige?” The answer is “NO!” Emblems are one of the only aspects of Black Ops MP that do not get a full reset upon entering Prestige. Things that will reset when you Prestige are: XP, COD Points, Challenge progressions, Loadouts, and so forth.

So that’s just a few of the lesser-known components to Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer, confirmed for the first time here on the official PlayStation.Blog! For more information regarding Black Ops, and all the new features included in multiplayer, head over to our official YouTube channel and watch all the different trailers we have highlighted from the game. Additionally, you can follow me on Twitter (@JD_2020) for more news and updates.

Justin May, the man accused of attempting to steal Atomic Games' unreleased title Breach during PAX East, was placed on pre-trial probation in Boston Municipal Court yesterday. Suffolk County District Attorney Press Secretary Jake Wark informed Joystiq that the conditions of the probation are that May "stay in school, not reoffend, stay off of Xbox Live web sites, and forfeit his computer, which was seized at the time of his arrest." If May follows the conditions, his case will be dismissed after 18 months. If not, he'll be "put back on track for trial."

May was arrested last March when he attempted to steal Breach from the PAX East show floor. He then skipped bail and eventually agreed to show up for court in May, with the latest hearing set for yesterday. We've contacted Atomic Games for comment on the outcome.

Hi everyone! The trick or treating season is upon us, and here is a ghoulish comic update to entertain you and your zombie friends.

We have Deadpool (2008) comics for you! Yes. Deadpool is one of Marvel’s most famous anti-hero, a disfigured and mentally unstable mercenary – who loves breaking the fourth wall and talking to his readers. This ongoing series is penned by Daniel Way of Wolverine and Incredible Hulk fame, and illustrated by X-Men expert Paco Medina. Issues #1 to #7 are all available today.

Y: The Last Man returns with three new issues this week, #11 to issue #13. Yorick Brown is the last man on earth… but is he the last man in the solar system? Could the answer be in the International Space Station? Yorick’s terrifying pursuers don’t care, and chaos ensues as the women around him risk all to keep him alive. If you are not following this series yet, make sure you give it a try – #1 is FREE so no excuse!

No less stressful is IDW’s 5 Days to Die, this week reaching issue #3. Ray Cisara is a tough cop who has survived a terrible car accident… for now. His serious brain injury leaves him five days to live. Should he stay to protect his daughter whose life is put on the line by the crash? Or should he track down the person who nearly wiped out his family? The cruel dilemma and its consequences unfold in this fast-paced action mini-series. Read and bite your nails!

Finally, here are a few topical recommendations for your Halloween weekend. Do you like slightly undead detectives and noir humour? IDW’s macabre and very funny Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse and Dead, She Said are for you. More of a zombie invasion fan? Check out the acclaimed Marvel Zombies and Marvel Zombies 2, as well as Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood’s beautifully creepy Zombies vs Robots and Zombies vs Robots Aventure. More undead mysteries can be found in Victorian Undead and in the fascinating story of Aleister Arcane. And of course let’s not forget Vampire Hunter D, Castlevania and the numerous Silent Hill comics we have in the store, amongst others.

Here is the full list of new comics for today:

Continuing coverage of the PlayStation Phone leak, Engadget has now posted details about the unannounced gaming slash cell device. Apparently the phone is currently known as "Zeus" internally and isn't running Android 3.0 firmware just yet (it's said to be running on 2.X for now). Additionally, Engadget reports, citing "multiple, trusted sources ... and we're not just talking good tipsters -- some of our information comes from people much more closely connected to the project," the "rumor" nature of the device has been clarified:
"The PlayStation Phone in the photos we ran last night, and the device reported on back in August is most definitely real. We're not saying that because we want to believe or because we're gingerly trying to nab pageviews: we're saying it because we know it to be true."Meanwhile, SCEE's original statement regarding the device -- "These images are definitely fake." -- has turned into: "Sony doesn't comment on rumour or speculation" (as has Sony Ericsson's statement). When contacted, SCEA counterparts similarly told us, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation." Unfortunately, suggesting to Sony that the PlayStation Phone doesn't appear to be either "rumor" or "speculation" didn't elicit further comment.

GoG continues to atone for its ill-advised publicity stunt by offering great games. The latest to be added to the Good Old shelves is Neverwinter Nights Diamond, a 2005 edition that collects BioWare's Dungeons and Dragons-based PC RPG and the "Shadows of Undrentide," "Hordes of the Underdark" and "Kingmaker" expansions.

That's ... entirely too many hours of gameplay, for ten dollars. Get this and you won't need to save for any of the games coming out this holiday season -- because you won't have time for them.
