We sure do like Civilization, but a browser-based, war-centric MMO with very similar sounding mechanics? That's something we could really get into. Lucky for us, Snail Games just announced that its free-to-play MMORTS Ministry of War, currently in beta, will launch next Wednesday, November 17.

Like Civ, MoW takes human history and drops it into an interactive playground. "Imperial Rome, Persia, Egypt, or China" are all at your disposal for world domination against other folks online, and beta users get a reward for participation with a "special in-game item pack." Snail Games promises that no more server wipes will take place after next Wednesday's launch, so now might be a good time to start plotting your path to hegemony.

As I've admitted more times than I can count, I'm part of the narrow subset of gamers who loves FMV games. It is, in fact, such a narrow subset that I'm the only game critic I know who's a member of it. It was with an understandable amount of incredulity then that I reported the news that one of my favorite FMV devs, the long-dead Trilobyte, was returning to relevance with an iOS port of its classic The 7th Guest.

I reached out to new COO Charlie McHenry to try to find out if this new Trilobyte was just interested in a one night stand, just playing with my heart or in it for something more serious.

A portion of a Nintendo-Okie review… Mama’s as cute as she’s ever been with her broken English. Fans of the Mama franchise will find another game that feels very familiar and that’s not a bad thing, but there needs to be more to the franchise at this point than what we’ve got.

Since popping our heads out of the sand to announce Journey at E3 this year, we have been deep in the throes of development. But now I’m peeking up again to see if any of you might be interested in giving us feedback on the game here in Los Angeles!

As you might already know, we have an extremely iterative development process, which means that although we are still building out the game, we like to get feedback from players early so we can incorporate it into the final version. This is a great opportunity to see the game as it progresses, and get a look behind the curtain of game development. Also, we’d love to have folks from this community help us! Here’s the info:

Evening of November 19th, 2010

Requirements to participate are:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Be an active PSN game player. We want people who are familiar with PSN games, visit the Store, and download games as a part of their PlayStation life.
  • Live in Los Angeles, and have reliable transportation to the playtest in Santa Monica.

In case you missed our E3 announcement, Journey is our latest game we’re working on with SCEA’s Santa Monica Studio, following flOw and Flower for PS3. With Journey we are taking a departure from our previous two games, introducing a human-like playable character, and a narrative that is much more like an adventure. All the while we are aiming to keep the emotion and beauty that our previous projects have become known for.

Given the ESRB's rating of Angry Birds on WiiWare way back in August, and the subsequent announcement of miniaturizing the game on PSP, we weren't shocked to hear Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka confirm "PSN, Wii, and Xbox" versions of the enormously popular game are on the way, saying those iterations are just the beginning for the future of the Angry Birds IP. Pocket Gamer reports that Vesterbacka confirmed as much during a speech at the first ever Social Gaming Summit in London this week.

It also looks like we'll see the game released digitally on consoles before a proper sequel, as Vesterbacka characterizes the XBLA/PSN/WiiWare ports as just "for starters." Soon after, he hinted that we could see a "surprise" twist on the game, telling the timeless tale of Angry Birds from the perspective of the lowly pigs. The gaming equivalent of "A Tale of Two Cities," but, ya know, with pigs and birds. Obviously.
