Transformers: War for Cybertron was surprisingly ... well, good. In fact, it was so good that there are plans for a follow-up. "This is the most highly-rated, critical success of any game that's had the Hasbro brand yet," Mark Blecher, SVP and General Manager of Digital Media & Gaming, said during an investors call earlier this week, according to IGN. "We're looking forward to a sequel in 2012."

The 2012 date makes it likely to be a different game than the previously-teased release for 2011. Considering Activision's penchant for annualized franchises, we're not particularly surprised.

[Thanks, Shockwave!]

My full God-given name is Reynaldo Gutierrez, which sadly isn’t as savvy and feared as your main man in Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. If you need a key historical figure taken out, you call for Ezio Auditore — you need a mean Cuban pork sandwich, you call Rey Gutierrez. The third installment in the Assassins Creed franchise arrives on the PS3 this week and the blog boyz are ready to behead and slay some Templars — Cesare Borgia, you’re going down, son.

Igniting mass destruction and triggering powerplays goes portable this week when one my favorite racing games of 2010, Split/Second, comes to the PSP. In other PSP news: A popular but previously delayed minis title has a new date; you’ll be dribbling and shouting “Boom Shakalaka!”; and Criterion and EA are on Hot Pursuit for speed. Finally, your PlayStation.Blog Share request for two specific games are answered — you’ve got yourself to thank. Grab a pillow and blanket and join me in the Animus for this week’s (very deadly and fast) The Drop.

By now, you'd think Super Mario would know better. Like Captain Kirk and Mitch Buchanan before him, any woman he romances is destined for danger. A kinder man would quit the dating scene altogether, maybe take up a hobby, and take comfort in knowing that he has spared some beautiful stranger the peril of knowing him. Not this guy. It's like he's got a hero complex or something. And so, in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!, there's Mario taking Pauline out of hiding for a romantic day at the Mini-Land amusement park, and there's Donkey Kong, right on schedule, snatching her away. Even though "mayhem" is not exactly the right word for the low-key puzzle game that ensues (and the exclamation point is just gratuitous), Mario's latest handheld adventure is nevertheless an appealing, though minor, entry in his canon.

Do you remember playing with those classic LCD handhelds in the 80s? Tiger and Nintendo's Game & Watch provided us with hours of simple handheld gaming. It's a far cry from the gaming available on today's portables, but it was the best we could get back then.

Developer Frugal Games wants to capitalize on nostalgia with its first self-published release: Flee, for Android. "We tried to recreate the feeling of playing an LCD handheld from the 80s," the developer told us. "But we didn't want to just emulate. We created from scratch a new and original game that adds updated gameplay and contemporary game design." There are some cool, subtle touches in the game. For example, the virtual device gets dirtier the more you use it. You'll also see the screen distort when you press the screen. Classy!

The game is currently available on the Android marketplace for one Euro. There is a free "Lite" version as well, one that includes less levels, less songs and is more prone to getting virtually dirty. It's certainly one of the most clever ways we've seen a developer try to convince players to upgrade to the non-free version. Check out a video after the break.

Ian Cummings, creative director of Madden NFL 11, recently had a chance to play Fight Night Champion, calling it "f'ing amazing." His enthusiasm for another EA Sports game is unsurprising, but the other detail certainly is: "Fight Night Champion is M-rated ... it's definitely going to wow folks."

As spotted by Kotaku, the official website for Fight Night Champion was updated with a description of EA Sports' new direction for the franchise. "As the first-ever 'M' rated EA SPORTS title, Fight Night Champion showcases the truest graphical representation of the sport, lifestyle, and culture of boxing with authentic and dynamic blood, realistic body damage and deformation, and mature content throughout. Experience the violence and brutality that is true to the trade."

Our interest is definitely piqued by EA's bold attempt at redefining the long-running franchise. Will it pay off? Or will it result in another NBA Elite type disaster? IGN grabbed the first trailer of the game, and you can decide for yourself.

Xbox Live Indie Games have had a difficult time getting attention -- sometimes from Microsoft itself. But, that will (hopefully) change with a new developer-led initiative, called Indie Games Winter Uprising. Not unlike XBLA's Summer of Arcade and Game Feast series, this timed promo will highlight over a dozen "great games" on the service with "prices as low as 80 to 400 Microsoft Points."

The promo will last for exactly one week, during the first week of December. With games from Ska Studios and Radiangames participating, this should certainly entice newcomers to the Indie Games section of the Dashboard.

Persona 2 is getting a flashy makeover in Atlus' upcoming PSP remake. As evidenced by this still, the updated RPG is oozing with style. But, pretty cinematics aren't the only new addition for the upcoming release. Siliconera has a terrific gallery, comparing the PSone original with the upcoming PSP port. The added detail on the sprites is immediately noticeable, as is the newly implemented widescreen presentation. Special effects look a bit crisper, as well

Some of the changes are not just cosmetic. The battle UI has also been updated, letting you see the upcoming turn order and the emotion gauge during demon negotiation. Siliconera adds that "Innocent Sin has cut-in screens when you use sync skills, a feature not in the PsOne release."

Unfortunately, Atlus has yet to announce the game for US release. Perhaps Atlus needs more time to figure out what bonus items to package with the UMDs?

If you pre-order Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded from GameStop or Amazon, you can kind of make your DS look like the Japan-exclusive Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days DSi. Kind of.

Square Enix announced that pre-orders of the DS jaunt through Jiminy's memories will include the above sticker sheet, containing 32 2mm-thick stickers with various emblems from the series. The offer has yet to show up on either retailer's site, but if you wish upon a star (or wait a bit) we're confident it will appear.

We really liked Hoard, Big Sandwich Games' unique dragony RTS/RPG mashup. What we didn't like, however, was the game's incredibly small text size. In our review, we said that the developers "should have known better than to make the text that small." Apparently, Tyler Sigman, designer of Hoard, agrees, telling us that, "it was a bit of an oversight on our part that came from too many hours sitting right next to our development TVs."

Thankfully, the team is already at work on a quick fix. "You'll be happy to know we are working on a patch which includes increasing the text size," Sigman added.
