It's so rare that games come out sooner than expected rather than ... well, the other way around. That seems to be the case with Crazy Taxi. Though the game was initially slated for a November 23 release, it will actually be made available later today on the PlayStation Store for $9.99. Sorry, Xbox Live Arcaders, but your release date didn't get the red carpet treatment -- it's still coming November 24.

In fact, Sega has made the pot even sweeter for PS3 owners. If you're a subscriber to PlayStation Plus, you can go ahead and knock $1.99 off the price of the game if you purchase it before November 30. Wow, two dollars? That's cuh-raaaaaazy money. Actually, no, wait. That's perrrfectly saaaaane money.

In a late night missive from Polish publisher CD Projekt, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was given a solid release date: May 17, 2011. Project lead Adam Badowski admitted that the launch had been moved back "a few weeks" to allow the PC action-RPG more development time. "We've decided to the move the launch date back a few weeks to afford us more time to polish the game," he said.

CD Projekt also teased "hot news" to be served up during the publisher's autumn conference on November 18, including details of the game's Collector's Edition, pre-order specifics, and more. If you can't make it to the conference in person -- it's in Warsaw, Poland, after all -- it'll be streaming live on both the official Witcher 2 website and the game's Facebook page starting at 12:30PM EST sharp on November 18.

In the meantime, GameStop appears to have already launched the game's collector's edition listing, showing a $130 price tag and ... umm ... like, a ton of stuff (listed after the break). It's a good thing you have about half a year to save up all that dough!

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit races onto the PlayStation 3 today asking the vital question: are you a racer or are you a cop? That’s the choice you’ll make when you get behind the wheel and start tearing up the streets of Seacrest County.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit PlayStation 3 players will experience the thrill of the chase and the rush of the escape as they play through full careers as both a cop and a racer solo or connected. The blistering speeds, brutal busts and heart-stopping getaways are all connected via Need for Speed Autolog [link to post i wrote some time ago].

This network not only connects friends for epic head-to head pursuits and races, but also enables players to compare performances and stats, thereby setting the stage for the ultimate in friendly competition. I can tell you from playing here in the office that Autolog will bring out the competition in you – even if you’re not a competitive person. Every day we’re amazed at the new times people set on each of the events. You think it can’t be beaten…until it is. Finding the right combination of shortcuts, nitrous useage, and bust strategies is the key to achieving the best time.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit also provides you with exciting online game modes: Hot Pursuit is the exciting hunter vs. hunted mode where players can play as cops or racers. Interceptor mode is the ultimate head to head battle as one racer faces off against one cop. Finally, you have the traditional race mode. Pick your racetrack and car and win the race!

In addition to your racing and chasing skills, you’ll have access to weapons to help you including: spike strips, jammers, EMPs, helicopters, road blocks and more.

With its vast open-world, Seacrest County is the perfect place to get your fix for high-speed racing (or chasing) action. There are several diverse locales throughout coast, desert, forest, and mountain with unique features to provide each side of the law with certain benefits and challenges. One strong suggestion we would make is to drive around the county a few times on your own before taking part in any pursuits. Get familiar with the beautiful scenery and its many hidden shortcuts.

Please join us for a Game with Developer session on Saturday, November 20th from 11AM – 1PM PST. Put your driving skills to the test against the Criterion developers and see how you match up! Visit the Hot Pursuit website for more details.

Whether it's the non-numerical title, the proximity to the last entry in the series or the nearly identical box art, there seems to be a lot of confusion about whether Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood should be called a fully-fledged sequel to last year's bilingual stealth-action masterpiece. Is it a standalone installment in the franchise, or a collection of new gameplay ideas that weren't realized in time to make it into Assassin's Creed 2?

After completing the game's single-player campaign and digging into its multiplayer offerings, I can confidently say that I still have no idea. It could accurately be categorized as either, or even both, but ultimately that distinction's not all that important. Any way you slice it, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is an absolutely exceptional game.

Capcom has confirmed the launch date alongside the Special Edition, which Gamestop outed early this morning. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for auto enthusiasts and gaming fans! PlayStation and Polyphony Digital have teamed up with Nissan North America to bring you GT Academy, a competition using Gran Turismo 5 to win the ultimate prize – a chance to become a professional race car driver, starting December 20.

5169018456_2ea9bac12e.jpg

Whether or not you’re good enough to become a pro race driver doesn’t matter, because all participants will earn free digital content just for playing, as well as an opportunity to earn prizes for winning regional and national time trials. All participants will compete in a series of GT5 online trials using Nissan cars and will be narrowed down to the top 32 virtual racers in the U.S. They will be invited to compete to become one of 16 GT Academy finalists in the live national finals event in March 2011. The 16 finalists will compete in a series of challenges, including behind the wheel of real Nissan race cars, for a chance to become a professional race driver as the GT Academy winner. The ultimate GT Academy winner will train with elite race car drivers and race as part of a professional team.

And if that’s not exciting enough, the competitors’ road to victory will be documented in a multi-episode reality show airing exclusively on SPEED channel and the PlayStation Network in 2011.

Be sure to register first for GT Academy, which opens on December 6th at the official Gran Turismo website. Check out the official rules here, and visit the FAQ here for more information.

If you want to get a head start on GT Academy, be sure to pre-order Gran Turismo 5 to guarantee your copy of the game on November 24. Good luck, everyone!

What better day to announce a new entry in a long-standing franchise than the release date for what is, arguably, the best installment in the series to date. Today, on Need for Speed Hot Pursuit's big day, EA has stolen some of that thunder by announcing Shift 2 Unleashed, the sequel to last year's simulation-style installment.

In doing so, EA has dropped the "Need for Speed" half of the title (though the debut trailer, found after the break, still puts the game squarely in the NFS series, even using Hot Pursuit's n-shaped logo). In its place is Autolog, the excellent, always-connected enhancement that Burnout-dev Criterion brought to Hot Pursuit. EA calls it the "next generation" of the stats-driven friendship killer -- though, with less than half a year between both iterations, let's say we're skeptical of that claim.

The game is being built by racing veterans, and Shift developers, Slightly Mad Studios for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. This morning's press release says to expect the game in "spring 2011," which is pretty close to the previously reported Q1 2011 window. So, are you more of a Hot Pursuit or a Shift 2 kind of gamer?

This week's Pac-Man Championship Edition DX isn't just the second game in the Pac-Man CE series -- it's the first game in Namco Bandai's new "Namco Generations" series. Buying any game in the series, in Japan at least, will provide access to an online newsletter, visible from inside the game.

In announcing the existence of its new PS3/Xbox 360 retro-remake series, Namco went ahead and announced its next two offerings: Aero Cross and a sequel to Galaga Legions. This is the first mention of Galaga Legions DX, and the first official confirmation of Aero Cross, which has shown up in ratings previously. Its status as a Namco Generations game strongly suggests it's a Pac-Man CE-style update of the arcade game Metro-Cross.
