Iowa-based Budcat Creations is being closed, Activision confirmed in a statement this afternoon. The company also revealed a "targeted reduction in jobs" at its Quality Assurance outfit in California. Budcat had been owned by Activision since 2008, when the developer was acquired for work on the Guitar Hero franchise. According to the publisher, "approximately 88 positions, or approximately 1 percent of our global workforce" have been affected by today's layoffs -- Budcat is thought to comprise roughly 60 people, putting the California redundancies in the range of 25-35 workers.

"We continue to streamline our music development resources to ensure that they are aligned against our slate and strategic goals," Activision explained. "Budcat has been a great partner to Activision and has created a lasting impact on the Guitar Hero franchise." Aside from Guitar Hero, the studio also worked on the Psychonauts PS2 port, as well as Medal of Honor: Vanguard for Wii.

Activision also notes it's "working to redirect those employees that are impacted to other parts of the company where possible, as well as offering them outplacement counseling services." Activision's full statement can be found after the break.

Ghost gobbler redux.

LucasArts confirmed to Joystiq this afternoon that it "recently made a minor adjustment in staffing," confirming rumors of layoffs taking place at the company today (via George Broussard's Twitter). The company issued a statement confirming redundancies, but not detailing any specifics.

"LucasArts recently made a minor adjustment in staffing to help us better address the needs of the business," a LucasArts representative told us. "We remain committed to our internal studio -- and to fostering relationships with trusted external partners -- in order to deliver quality games that amaze and inspire fans."

This marks the second time LucasArts has let go of staff in the latter half of 2010 -- an unknown number of developers were released back in September, mirroring actions the studio took in 2008 (just prior to the launch of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). However, unlike what we heard of the previous round of layoffs, Broussard believes these the recent cuts were to "a team working on an unannounced game." LucasArts offered no comment regarding that speculation.

I'm floating effortlessly through a vast underwater garden, bioluminescent plants and fruits bursting forth from the ground whenever I touch down. I solve some simple puzzles and grow some more plants, pausing along the way to pick up a small musician to accompany me. As he floats behind me his gently plucked, looping bassline mixes with the world-beat soundtrack to create an emergent soundscape. Hi everyone! It is our pleasure to announce Comet Crash: Bionic Swarm will launch today on the PlayStation Store for $4.99. Additionally, a free patch update to Comet Crash is available.

The Bionic Swarm campaign continues where Comet Crash left off. Enemy forces have resurrected with improved defenses and advanced technology. To defeat them you will battle your way through 16 action packed levels that span across two new environments.

In Bionic Swarm you will expand the abilities of Basic Ops units and unlock advanced weapons with the Research tower. Scouts and Tanks are morphed into hideous and powerful swarm creatures. Drones are upgraded into vicious Kamikazes that hurl themselves into enemy air units. One of the most exciting additions in Bionic Swarm and the highlight of today’s new video footage – Missiles – obliterate clusters of enemy buildings and units with one strike. Missile Defense systems also help to protect territories of your choice. Anxious to bolster your crawling army's cache of weaponry in Worms 2: Armageddon? Starting today, attempted wormicide just got a bit more interesting through the release of the "Battle Pack" DLC, which adds a new single-player campaign of 30 new deathmatches, more customization options, new game modes such as "Warzone," "Forts Pro" on iOS and the survival variant "Bodycount" on PS3, a slew of new awards and Trophies and, of course, new weapons, which include "termites, ferrets and worship statues." Sorry, European PS3 users -- you've got to wait until tomorrow before you can access the new content.

The DLC will set worm wranglers back $1.99 on iOS devices, while the PS3 booster shot will cost a bit more at $4.99 (€3.99 in Europe). Namco Bandai has announced that its renovated take on its renovated take (whooooa) on its ancient, puck-shaped pill-popper, Pac-Man: Championship Edition DX, will find its way to Xbox Live Arcade during tomorrow's weekly update, and onto PlayStation Network next Tuesday, November 23. The clearly LSD-fueled title will be offered for 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99.
