Of the Genesis games ported to iPhone by Sega so far, we would suggest that Phantasy Star 2 was the best idea. It's turn-based, which means that you don't really need to rely on the virtual controls for quick, reflex-based actions. On the exact opposite end of the "good idea" continuum is Sega's latest iPhone port: Gunstar Heroes.

Perhaps think of it as an "expert" edition. If you've somehow managed to master Treasure's run-and-gun masterpiece on the Genesis and/or Game Gear and/or Virtual Console, now try it without the benefit of knowing where the buttons are! Gunstar Heroes for iOS does have one rather impressive feature going for it: Bluetooth-based multiplayer. Perhaps it's time to invest in a set of Tactile+Plus stickers!

Previous Taiko no Tatsujin -- or Taiko Drum Master -- games for Wii and DS have featured playable medleys of Super Mario Bros. music, accompanied by 8-bit dancing Mario and friends. The latest Wii release in the adorable drumming series, Taiko no Tatsujin Wii Everybody Party 3rd, builds on the formula by featuring the theme from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, along with polygonal Mario, Luigi and Toad dancers.

Andriasang notes that in addition to the NSMB Wii track, the new Taiko Drum Master features musical renditions from other notable games including Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, God Eater, Ridge Racer Type 4, and ... Muscle March. The game also includes minigames with pirate, alien, fairytale and Gator Panic themes. In general, there's a ton of great-looking content, making the fact that no Taiko game has been localized for release outside of Japan since 2004 that much more crushing.

CD Projekt is worried about piracy -- specifically, as it concerns the developer's upcoming, adult-oriented RPG, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings -- and understandably so. As a single-player-only PC title, The Witcher 2 is awfully ripe for pirating. However, the Polish developer is hoping to counteract these illicit acquisitions by more doggedly pursuing those who play the game illegally. CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński recently told Eurogamer that "we are signing with legal firms and torrent sneaking companies" to hunt down gamers who download The Witcher 2 unlawfully.

Such offenders will be sent a letter demanding they pay a fine -- the sum of which was left unspecified, though it will be more than the game's suggested retail price. Though it sounds a bit like the RIAA's anti-piracy scare tactics, Iwiński said, "We don't want to be so harsh, but there is a chance that this might happen to some people if they download illegally." Or, in other words, don't make CD Projekt use its angry voice, because it's going to hurt them a lot more than it's going to hurt you.

Scott Macmillian is an indie game developer in Boston (one of the organizers of the IDGA chapter up there) who has taken on a seemingly insurmountable goal: Make a fun Facebook game. Yes, despite the fact that Facebook games are rolling in dough, none of them offer much gameplay beyond a lot of cow-clicking, and so Macmillian's Macguffin Games is going to attempt to change all of that with a game called Mustache Mercenaries, starring giant robots and historical figures.

Intrigued? Then Macmillian wants your money -- he's funding the project through Kickstarter, a site that allows donations of various sizes in an NPR-style pledge drive. As little as $3 will get you a place in the game's credits, $50 or more will get you a lifetime supply of the eventual game's Coal currency, and for $1000, you can actually get a robot built for you and named after you in the game. The final title is supposed to be turn-based combat, pitting steam-powered robots against each other, piloted by real-life people like Abraham Lincoln and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Sound a little crazy? Yes, and that might be why the company has only raised around $2500 of its $15k goal as of this writing. But then again, if you've ever actually played Farmville or Mafia Wars, you'll probably agree that there's a lot of fun lacking in the social network game genre. If Mustache Mercenaries can add that, we can't help but support the cause.

Avid Halo Wars players, whose attention hasn't been swayed by 2010's exhaustive list of strategy blockbusters, were greeted with some unwelcome news this past weekend: The game's stat tracking home, as well as its official forums, will be shut down on December 15. The loyal community is being persuaded to move its conversation over to the Halo Waypoint forums. On the same day as the closure, an update will launch for Halo Wars, forever severing it from the soon-to-be-discontinued website.

The update will also remedy a few Theater mode issues that were keeping players from viewing cutscenes, but, according to the Bungie representative who made the announcement, "it won't include many of the fixes that we all wanted it to include." As you can imagine, the responses on said post are well-measured, even-headed and entirely polite. There's just this air of understanding permeating the entire discussion that's ... well, it's really inspiring.

Konami has announced the apparent milestone shipment of one million copies of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to retailers across the US and Europe since the game's October 5 release. While the publisher didn't specify just how many of those copies have actually been sold, president Shinji Hirano patted his company on the back with a few vague words of encouragement, saying in a statement, "The remarkable sales achieved in such a short time are a true testament of the work and dedication that went into this project."

Clearly, for Konami to have shipped so many copies to retail, ongoing sales of Lords of Shadow must be reasonably strong, though the title failed to crack the top ten in US software sales last month, and it only lasted two weeks in the UK's top-ten rankings. But Konami is still declaring a victory for the series' "rebirth," adding that it's "extremely pleased at the positive response seen" to developer MercurySteam's effort. The game's Japanese debut is scheduled for December.
