The battle for mobile gaming supremacy rages on! While the traditional purveyors of mobile gaming, Nintendo and Sony, iterate with the 3DS and PSP2 respectively, newcomers like Apple, with its increasingly ubiquitous iOS offerings, Google, with its Android OS, and even Microsoft, with its recently launched Windows Phone 7 platform, offer a compelling (and, for now, more technologically powerful) alternative. And, if data from market research firm Interpret is to be believed, this alternative is waxing, while PSP and DS use wanes.

"The proliferation of highly multifunctional smartphones and messaging phones is a very real threat to the dominance by the DS and PSP of the handheld gaming market," Interpret's Courtney Johnson, manager of Research and Analysis, said in a press release announcing the firm's upcoming report. "Devices which satisfy a variety of entertainment and utility are fast outstripping single-function devices as consumer favorites." To that end, Interpret's report -\-- which was based on a U.S. survey of 9,000 people -- found that 44 percent of the mobile gaming market, comprised of phone, DS, and PSP platforms, "plays games on phones." That's a 53.2-percent increase over last year, "while the proportion of those who play on the DS or PSP has fallen by 13 percent."

Perhaps the most damning statistic included in the tease for the report is this: 27.2 percent of respondents said that they played games on their phones only, though they already own a DS or PSP. Joining the chorus of pundits sounding the death knell for traditional "standalone" handheld gaming platforms is Michael Pachter, who used his Pach Attack pulpit last week to say, "I think the ubiquity of the iPod Touch is cutting into the handheld market. I think the PSP was dead on arrival and I think the PSP2 is going to be dead on arrival."

The unknown quantity in much of this debate: the as-yet-unannounced PlayStation Phone. Is Sony hedging its bets on the PSP2 platform by extending the life cycle of the PSP1 platform, converting it from a standalone device into an Android-compatible service? Place your bets in the comments below.

One of the most impressive elements of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is its fluid, expressive animation -- even when the movements taking place aren't the most naturally graceful things. For example, the trailer after the break features a man having a heart attack or some other kind of medical emergency, and it's about as balletic as a heart attack could be.

Even better, after seeing this impressive display in the game, you'll be able to turn back time and swing your ghostly self from flag to sword across his room to retrieve his pills. So, for now, you can delight in his Fred Sanford-style gesticulations guilt-free.

Sometimes, Flash-based games catch our collective attention thanks to an innovation so simple it's puzzling that it took a designer so long to put it into practice. That's the case with Awkward Silence Games' One Chance, a simple, side-scrolling adventure title that puts you in the shoes of Dr. Pilgrim. The good doctor has invented a cure for cancer that -- oops! -- will kill every living thing on Earth in six days.

Here's the twist: After you beat the game, you're stuck with the ending you get on your first playthrough (so long as you play along with the limitations of the platform and don't go deleting your browser cache). You don't get a second chance. Hence the name.

There's only a handful of decisions you can make during the last six days on Earth, but each one has an impact on your final, final destination. Choose wisely! Wait, what are you doing? No, don't do that! You'll regret it forever!

Codemasters is apparently sick of waiting on NetDevil to finish Jumpgate Evolution and has sued the developer, along with its parent company Gazillion Entertainment, over breach of contract [PDF link]. The publisher claims to have spent over $1.4 million on the interminably delayed project, which included $1.1 million in advances and $300,000 in "art assets." The suit states that NetDevil was to complete the project for "commercial release on or before February 24, 2009."

Law of the Game on Joystiq columnist Mark Methenitis explains, "Codemasters wants their money back, in short, for a product that was never delivered. In a contracts case like this, it's one of your only two options given the fact scenario: Everyone gets back what they put in to act like the contract never happened (rescission) or the court forces everyone to complete the contract as written (specific performance). I doubt Codemasters wants the product at this point, so they're asking for what amounts to a refund."

Jumpgate Evolution warped back into development in May 2009 after NetDevil's "Friends & Family" testing brought up issues. A Gazillion representative has informed Joystiq that the company has nothing to report on the status of Jumpgate Evolution or its release window at this time, and that the company doesn't comment on legal matters.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working with our good friends at Capcom on getting PS3s down to LA for the soon-to-be-legend-wait-for-it-dary Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Food Fight. It’ll definitely be the place to be leading up to the Spike Video Game Awards on Saturday evening.

You know, the VGAs where you’re going to see the debut of the new Resistance 3 trailer (I haven’t even seen it yet), where God of War III will be contending for Game of the Year, and where who knows what other awesome things will happen? Those VGAs?

Well, like last year, we’re holding a VGAs viewing party in LA, and you’re invited [pointing at you]. We think fun experiences are best shared with friends – friends who are picking up the tab. So we’ve teamed up with Capcom to transition their Food Fight into a viewing party for the VGAs broadcast. So please, drop by, play Marvel vs Capcom 3 on PS3, eat delicious food, and watch the World Premieres* unfold among friends. Be sure to RSVP here!

What more do you need? Oh, how about the details:

Where: Kim Sing Theatre, 722 N. Figueroa Street, Downtown LA
When: Saturday, December 11 from 4pm – 8pm
Cost: FREE. I mean, come on!
RSVP: On our Facebook Event page.

It’s going to be a fun event, and we’ve got lots of room, so bring the family. See you there!

Nine months after the ESRB listed Neo Geo games for PS3 and PSP, publisher SNK Playmore has announced plans for a "Neo Geo Station" on PlayStation Network. Starting December 21, games from the Neo Geo's library will be released on PSN in both PS3 and PSP versions, costing $8.99 and $6.99 each, respectively. The pricing on the PS3 versions is equivalent to the cost of buying Neo Geo games on the Wii Virtual Console.

Unlike the Virtual Console releases, these aren't just emulated versions of the originals. SNK has added features like online co-op and versus play on PS3 (and Ad-Hoc Party support on PSP), along with other unspecified enhancements. Check after the break for all ten games hitting PS3 on December 21, and the two PSP games arriving at the same time. The other eight are scheduled to arrive on PSP sometime in January.

If the phrase "escort mission" tickles your gag reflex, then you'd be forgiven for overlooking Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom. After all, this is a game that promises nothing but hours and hours of adventures with a largely computer-controlled sidekick. You wouldn't even be swayed if somebody told you that your partner obeys your commands. You've been down this road before, and you know it ends in a ditch.

But this Majin fella, he's not so useless, in fact, you wouldn't last an hour in the dangerous ruins of this ancient civilization without his help. He's a bodyguard, a medic, and a handyman. He even carries out your orders as you intended them! You may start to wonder: who is escorting whom, exactly?
