The wait was worth it: Batman: Arkham City's VGA trailer showed Bats taking down some crooks seemingly strapped with tons of high-tech weaponry in the most badass way. Of course they're no match for The Dark Knight -- why would they even try?

What is SSX: Deadly Descent? It's the next SSX game of course, silly! Other than a quick logo that flashed during the opening to the Spike VGAs tonight, nothing is known about the game. Okay, okay, there was that handful of domain registrations from EA last month. So, in summary: snowboarding, SSX, EA. We'll bring you more as soon as we hear it!

For the fourth (yes, fourth) year running, my brother (and fellow Joystiq editor) Griffin McElroy and I are going to watch the VGAs so you don't have to. Traditionally, we make fun of them in the cruelest and most profanity-laden way possible, but maybe they'll, you know, be really great this year? Like, super duper classy?
... Maybe? Bookmark this page and let's find out together after the break at 8 p.m. EST.
Spike's Video Game Awards are about an hour away (we'll put up our liveblog shortly), but our own Mike Schramm got to the red carpet early to snap some shots and dish with the celebrities attending this year's event. As he forwards us more pics, we'll be sure to add them to the gallery below. In the meanwhile, let us know what you're looking forward to most at this year's show. Is it the Guillermo Del Toro game? Is it Batman: Arkham City? Mass Effect 3?

A new batch of beta trial invitations for LittleBigPlanet 2 were supposed to go out this month, and they did, but apparently they all contained the same key. More »
It's usually bad news bears for the fate of a particular game when we go nearly three years without hearing so much as a peep about it from its creators -- hence our general lack of surprise at Square Enix's recent revelation that Highlander: The Game's development has been halted. The project was nearly as old as Mr. MacLeod himself, having been in development since 2005 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC under the wing of publisher Eidos and French developer WideScreen Games.
Though Square confirmed the canning to IGN, it would not share details as to exactly why the project went south. We heard that it was due to the development team's proclivity for decapitating one another with giant broadswords, citing "research," but keep in mind that we just totally made that up.
A portion of an NWR review…
Due to the shoddy, strategically lacking gameplay and the absurd, nonsensical plot and concept, Beyblade on DS should be ignored by everyone except for die-hard fans, if they even exist.
It’s the various men that have formed Sonic over the years, and it looks like they all get along quite well. At least they’re friendly enough to get together and chat with each other! I wonder what would happen if all of these guys paired up now to make another Sonic title. [...]

Ubisoft isn't quite done launching games in this, the year 2010 AD quite yet -- the publisher recently posted the iPad version of Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles to the App Store. The game's description on the iTunes marketplace boasts an "iPad-optimized camera" and "impressive HD graphics," apparently remedying two of the biggest problems with the original, almost three-year-old DS version of the game. Man, it's practically a retro throwback at this point, isn't it?
You can relive Altair's Chronicles for $9.99, which is much, much more cost efficient than exploring the dude's history using an Animus. We haven't checked the latest Sharper Image catalog, but we're pretty sure those things are wicked expensive.
