Our friends at WayForward are tackling Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark on 3DS, but it's not going to be the type of title you'd expect that dev to make. Apparently the game is going to take on a strategy approach, but we don't have any other specific details at this time.

Into the valley of death rode the 600! Actually just the six. Titanfall is still a few weeks away from release but the Joystiq Troopers are amongst the many honing their skills in the Xbox One and PC betas currently underway.

Last Thursday, Joystiq Streams brought you a look at Titanfall on Xbox One. This week, we head into the PC version. A six-man Joystiq squad has been assembled, including Alexander "Doc" Sliwinski, Xav "Yukon" De Matos, Sam "Snake Eyes" Prell, Sinan "Union Jack" Kubba, Dave "Le Rock" Hinkle, and Richard "The" Mitchell.

These brave souls will take to their Titans at 4PM EST on the Joystiq Twitch channel. Come watch and chat with us then. [Images: Respawn Entertainment]

Coming from Digital Foundry...

Despite the enormous leap in power the new consoles represent, in our opinion it's the Wii U version of Rayman Legends that remains the definitive edition of the game, with the title taking advantage of the GamePad's unique features in ways that genuinely add variety and more fun to the gameplay. Let's not forget that while this game may have been ported to a vast range of different hardware platforms, it started out life as a Wii U exclusive, built around the unique capabilities of the system. Indeed, it's the Nintendo console that offers the experience that the developers originally intended for the game, before the last-minute switch to a multi-platform release.

Amazon's gold box deal is Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for $20 off. In gameplay terms, it was among the best of the major releases last year, with a single-player campaign that, if anything, was too long, and tons of collectibles for those that sort of thing appeals to. The next-gen port treatment is a great excuse to play it or play it again. [Amazon]Read more...

It almost sounds like a joke when you first hear about it. How does Harmonix, creator of wildly far-reaching rhythm hits like Rock Band and Dance Central, go for a more “core” crowd? Why, they make a musical shooter, of course. Hoho, what a topical yet preposterous notion! Let us adjourn to ye olde Chuckle Hut, where we shall instantly acquire wealth beyond our wildest imagination.

Yet, here we are. And you know what? Chroma looks (and sounds, obviously) like a pretty darn cool idea. If you perform actions – from shooting to running and jumping – on song beats, you’ll do them with more aplomb. Moreover, different teams represent different musical genres, with weapons and environments creating sounds synced to a beat underlying each level. It’s a giant, rhythmically thrumming combat arena, with DNA that crisscrosses between music theory and Quake.

Chroma is, however, Harmonix’s first crack at free-to-play, which could spell disaster in less dedicated hands. But between a firm no-pay-to-win stance and a partnership with Defense Grid and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive developer Hidden Path, things certainly seem to be on the right track. … [visit site to read more]

By now you’ve played The Last of Us and likely have learned more about Ellie’s backstory in The Last of Us: Left Behind. Maybe you’re been wondering how we got Joel’s beard to look so good or why Ellie acts like she does. We’re pleased to say that Grounded: The Making of The Last of Us can provide you with some answers and that it’s now available to watch for free.

If you live in North America, head over to Amazon Instant Video now and be the first, outside of our season pass holders, to watch the full, ninety minute, in-depth look at the making of The Last of Us throughout its development. We partnered with Area 5 to produce the video and it’s a thoughtful afterword to the game itself.

For those of you outside the US, Grounded will be coming to the PlayStation YouTube channel very soon. We’re working on additional ways for you to view Grounded in its entirety, so be on the lookout for those announcements.

In the next few days, we’ll also be providing a glimpse into the making of the Left Behind and some thoughts from the development team about what it was like to make our first-ever single-player downloadable chapter.

If you haven’t purchased The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Left Behind or our Season Pass yet, it’s best to do so before you dive into watching Grounded. As for our season pass holders, we’ll be adding even more value to your season pass in the coming weeks.

Be sure to check out Grounded and see how the game that’s won over 230 Game of Year awards, The Last of Us, was made.

Coming from Image and Form's Brjann Sigurgeirsson...

We’re still considering it, but we’re not working on it at the moment – we weigh our options every week. We still think the Wii U is a fantastic and innovative platform, and I wish Nintendo could make consumers realize what makes it so special, so that the market grows. Sadly, I don’t think SteamWorld Dig is the game that will make them rush to the stores and buy the hardware – it takes a change in mindset, and another marketing angle from the maker.

I don’t think it’s sad about SteamWorld Dig, actually – I see it as the door is still open for the Wii U! But, we’re not a big dev studio at all, but we’re fortunate that Image & Form consists of brilliant people. All the time we have to prioritize what we do, and the order in which we do things is crucial to our economy. We have to start the “right” type of project every time, otherwise we won’t be around to make more games. Every SKU decision is a gamble, we don’t have a great buffer, and getting the right games and SKUs out at the right time is key for us – as it is with all smaller studios.

4cr: Have you thought about bringing Blackmore to consoles (Wii U/PS4/XBO) along with the PC and Mac releases?

JB: Absolutely. We definitely want to do that and I would say there is a very strong chance that we will. It will take a little extra money and we are currently trying to get a better sense of how much resources we will need for those conversions.

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Dominic Szablewski of Phoboslab...

NL: What new features are present in XType Plus that you are bringing to Wii U?

DS: XType Plus has an entirely new game mode - the Plus Mode. It's a bit more action oriented; you have to keep moving all time. It features some different enemy weapons, EMP bombs and time based gameplay - you play against the clock instead of having 3 lives.

Another big feature is the online leaderboard and the replay system. Each time you upload your highscore a recording of how you played is uploaded with it. Other players can browse through the highscores and watch these recordings. This is a great way to learn some new strategies or just to watch some Japanese dude totally owning the game.
I also spent a lot of time tweaking the gameplay for XType Plus. I balanced the scoring, implemented a bonus system for bigger kills, tweaked the health of the enemies, number of bullets. Basically the whole difficulty ramp.

On top of that, there's a whole lot of polish. A new menu system, more music, more sound effects and revamped graphics.
