A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Ripstone's co-founder Phil Gaskell and Zoink! founder Klaus Lyngeled...

Lyngeled: When we talked about doing a Wii U version we knew we'd have to use the GamePad, with the screen, and we thought it'd be cool to use it as a mind reading device. The way we've done it, which I think works really well and turned out good, much better than I expected, is that when you pick up the Wii U device it goes into mind-reading mode, so it feels when you pick it up or rest it down. So you can basically point around on the screen itself, pick characters, zoom in on their brains and pick which brain you want to read. So there's a specific mind-reading screen on the GamePad and the main screen on the TV.

This way it's much quicker to go from one brain to another if there are a lot of people around the same area. Then of course you have the mind-reading voice itself coming out of the GamePad, also, which I'm really happy with.

NL: So is the GamePad screen permanently in a more zoomed in view?

Lyngeled: Yeah, it shows this weird mind-world background. Then every character that can be read appears on this little screen, you can target zoom on each of them at which point it also zooms in on the TV itself. Then of course you also have a map, so when you're not mind-reading there's always a map appearing on it, but that's simple stuff.

NL: Is there off-TV play, and if so does the gameplay revert to the PS3 style?

Lyngeled: Yeah, off-TV is there. If you play on just the GamePad, you can use the pointer like on PS3 but you can also touch the screen itself for picking the brains.

NL: For those that aren't necessarily the GamePad's biggest fans, are there other controllers supported?

Lyngeled: It supports the Wii U Pro Controller.

Gaskell: It doesn't support Wii Remotes.

Sometimes interviews go perfectly according to script and everything is just dandy. Also, frequently boring. In those instances, you nod dutifully after exhausting every possible line of questioning, turn off your recorder, and usually buy some form of burrito to soak up the tears. But other times things just sort of naturally veer into wacky territory. That’s not to say that CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson’s dreams of a virtual-reality-born utopian future aren’t admirable (personally, I’d love for them to come true), but these are some huge – almost preposterously so – ideas. Do you want to hear how EVE Online could, according to its creator, help end class disparities once and for all? Then you’ve come to the right place.

The Best of Warner Bros. 50 Film Blu-ray Collection is one of the most popular entertainment items we've ever listed, and today it's down to its lowest price of $179. This set includes digital copies in addition to the blu-rays, and features films like Inception, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and The Dark Knight, along with classics like 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. Developed by NetVoucherCodes.co.uk, Donkey Cutts is an homage to Donkey Kong with Google’s head of SEO Matt Cutts taking the lead role.

The video game works like Donkey Kong where your ultimate goal is to reach the top of the ladder.

To score points you need to be SEO savvy for instance, by getting links and shares, by getting social signals, by jumping over a panda or penguin and being white hat.

Your points go down if you get hit by a penguin or panda or you’re involved in black hats.

You can win points for ‘awesome content’ and penalties can be fixed with the trusty SEO hammer, a bit like the hammer in Donkey Kong.

A portion of an ONM interview with Retro CEO Michael Kelbaugh and Nintendo SPD producer Kensuke Tanabe...

ONM: Both the US team members and NCL production team obviously felt like there was still more to come from the DKC franchise. Do you feel like you've managed to get all those great ideas into this game... or do you still have more ideas for another game?

MK: As a game developer, I've felt that you always leave something on the drawing board that you wish you could have gotten in, and you're always tormented by the thought "Wouldn't it be cool if we had included...?" I really believe however that those thoughts inspire future games and ideas that you use on the next game. For example; the dynamic 3D Camera we used in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was something we wanted to work into Donkey Kong Country Returns. We just didn't have the time so we implemented it into Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. There are also a host of really great ideas that we simply didn't have the bandwidth to get into Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze; you'll just have to wait and see where they end up.

KT: Again, exactly as Michael said, it is nearly impossible to put every idea that we come up with into our games; these ideas vary from small ones to big ones. To tell you one of my personal experiences, I worked on the overall concept, storyline and structure of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and there were some ideas that didn't make it. Out of these ideas, there was one I really wanted to see in a game and we finally decided to use it as one of the basic concepts for the setting of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening a few years later (this was, in fact, that the world ends when a massive egg breaks on top of a mountain). As for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, there are quite a few more things I feel that we could have done with the Animal Buddies. If we ever make another Donkey Kong Country title again, I would certainly want to make more use of them!

ONM: Mr. Miyamoto told us back at E3 that he massively respects Retro and that he thinks Retro is at the stage where it can handle multiple Nintendo projects at once. How does the relationship with NCL work if Retro has multiple projects? Does one set team of people work together no matter what the project or do different projects require different team relationships?

MK: To hear this from Miyamoto-san is very humbling and we are very proud of the opportunities he and Nintendo have given us.

To answer your question more directly, it really depends on the franchise we work with. Every Nintendo character/franchise has a creator and depending on which franchise we work with, it's likely we would in some manner work with that creator. That being said, Tanabe-san and his team at SPD are our primary contacts at Nintendo and collaborative team members. Please let me be clear, games developed at Retro Studios are a collaboration between members from Retro Studios, SPD and various other entities throughout the Nintendo family. It's a symbiotic relationship that consists of members from all over the world; we are very honoured to be working with such a talented team.

When we worked on Mario Kart 7, we were working on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze at the same time. Part of the team was working on creating assets for Hideki Konno's group, the Mario Kart team, and part of our team continued making progress on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in conjunction with Tanabe-san and SPD.

We're very proud to be a Nintendo studio working on Nintendo games.

KT: We consider Retro as part of Nintendo family and a very capable game development studio. As a Nintendo development team, they will keep working with not only SPD, but also with the development teams in Kyoto. They might even work on a title that Miyamoto-san leads directly in the future. However, the SPD team assigned to Retro is working together with them as a single team and I hope it will continue this way. (On Mario Kart 7, for example, SPD staff were involved as co-ordinators.) I am saying this because a very interesting and stimulating chemical reaction occurs when the two parties from different languages and cultures are united under Nintendo's game production philosophy, and that chemical reaction results in extraordinary ideas.
