The indomitable human spirit is the subject of this latest Dark Souls 2 trailer, which shows the punishing series isn't defined by how often you die, but what you learn from your demise each time.

Video report placed after the jump due to autoplay...

The family of a 17-year-old shot and killed by a Euharlee police officer has hired an attorney, and they say he had a remote control in his hand. They say it was not a gun.

...“The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand. He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest,” Law said.

Because games, toys, TV and an upcoming movie aren’t enough, the Rabbids are about to add yet another chapter to their madcap tale of global takeover when they conquer the almighty printed page later this year. Ubisoft is teaming up with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, which will release a full line of hardcover, paperback and e-books in the US and Canada starting summer 2014. The books will be based on both the game franchise and the smash-hit TV show Rabbids Invasion.

“Simon & Schuster is thrilled to add the Rabbids to our publishing portfolio,” says Valerie Garfield, Vice President, Publisher of Novelty and Licensed Publishing at Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. “We feel that their hilarious antics will truly appeal to the 6-10 audience – and beyond – who appreciates this silly humor. They are a fresh and decidedly unique voice in licensed publishing.”

RabbidsUnder the imprint Simon Spotlight, the publisher will produce everything from joke and novelty books to beginning readers and full chapter books. These books will bring the popular characters to yet another medium, having already taken over videogames (14 million sold worldwide), licensed products, TV, and even viral videos (over 71 million views on YouTube videos starring the Rabbids).

“Working with a top children’s book publisher like Simon & Schuster Publishing expands the Rabbids brand even further,” says Tony Key, Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We’re confident the Rabbids will continue to delight fans with each new brand extension, and the success we’ve had with the videogames and TV show will be replicated with the books.”

Though it's been available on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One for the past few days, the free Bonnaroo app gets its first injection of real content this evening in the form of a concert leading up the official reveal of the lineup of bands to appear at this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival.

The festivities begin at 7PM ET, with a pre-show hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress and Saturday Night Live's Taran Killam. According to Xbox Wire, this show will also feature a collaborative "SuperJam" from Ben Folds and The Flaming Lips. The Bonnaroo 2014 lineup will be revealed immediately following the pre-show, along with further information on what exactly the Bonnaroo app will be able to show Xbox users.

The 2014 incarnation of the Bonnaroo Music Festival is slated to take place in Manchester, Tennessee from June 12 to 15. Those who would rather make the trek to experience the event in person than watch it via Xbox app will find more information on how to get tickets at the Festival's website. [Image: Xbox Wire]

We just recently reported that Monster Hunter 4 had shipped 4 million units in Japan. Capcom has already updated that figure, pointing out that 4.1 million units have shipped as of February 13th. The real good news is that the game’s sell-through percentage is “also high”. With Monster Hunter 4G on the way, Capcom confirmed that there will be more advertising and promotional events to raise awareness of both titles.

- digital downloads of full games have more than doubled over the last year
- DLC sales are up 10% over expectations
- DLC accounts for about 15-16% of sales in the consumer (packaged) games business
- Capcom believes this ratio will continue to increase
- the difference in profitability between retail sales and download sales is negligible at the moment

The original Flappy Bird may be gone, but it continues to live on in all sorts of tributes—and not all of these tributes are digital. Take this awesome cardboard box contraption, for example—it's a machine that lets you play Flappy Bird 'in real life.' It's also just as tough as the original Flappy Bird. Excellent!Read more...

2007's Earth Defense Force 2017 ranks as one of my favorite multiplayer experiences on the Xbox 360. Pitting an army of tiny (but heavily armed) humans against massive waves of gigantic insects, the EDF games have a uniquely charming appeal, despite their low-rent aesthetics. Co-op play in EDF 2017 required frantic communication with an experienced teammate in order to survive its screen-filling enemy swarms, and few games released in the years since matched its impressive sense of scale and array of powerful explosive weaponry. It wasn't perfect, though - its missions followed a simple and repetitive structure, and the lack of online multiplayer stung.

The recent spinoff game Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon promised a glorious return for the series, but ended up being a crushing disappointment instead. Insect Armageddon's inexperienced development team misunderstood the series' appeal, replacing EDF's defining elements with puny weapons, boring objectives, and straightforward enemy encounters.

Now, Earth Defense Force 2025 puts the series back on track, returning development duties to franchise creator Sandlot and delivering the goofiest bug-blasting action this side of Starship Troopers. While much of EDF 2025's content treads familiar terrain, it has enough new features and improvements to make it a worthy successor to one of this generation's greatest cult classics.

This is the latest in the series of articles about the art technology of games, in collaboration with the particularly handsome Dead End Thrills.

Not only can I straightfacedly say that I enjoyed playing APB, I even have this document to prove it. Being what felt like a voice in the wilderness back then wasn’t what was frustrating, though, it was knowing that the trolls so vocal in the game’s own chat channels weren’t wrong. Such were this MMO shooter’s problems – the anarchy not just of game, you felt, but production – that no amount of charity was going to save it from the bloodlust of gloating critics.

As someone who loves a good character editor and was floored by APB’s ambition, I had a hard time dealing with the bait-and-switch of the game’s customisation modes. (What you built in the editor looked next to nothing like who you played in the game.) Clearly the game couldn’t deal with it, either, which is why much of its landscape is wallpapered in the work of a concept art dream team assembled by Webzen and Realtime Worlds. … [visit site to read more]
