There's something really peaceful and fun about slowly clearing this board of different colored pieces of paper. It reminds me of playing with the paint bucket tool in MS Paint. It can also get just as frustrating as when you have a space in your outline that you didn't catch.Read more...

Tengami may have just launched on iOS, but what about the Wii U version? While Nyamyam hasn't given an official date, they have pinned down the title for launch in June. Hopefully we'll get a specific day soon.

A portion of a Siliconera review...

Ultimately, Weapon Shop de Omasse is a tough game to sell. I absolutely adore the game, but will other people like it too? I feel like there’s only a super specific audience that will appreciate it. Do you: Own a Nintendo 3DS? Have a familiarity with classic RPG conventions and frustrations? Think you could be satisfied reading about adventures rather than going on them yourself? Deal well with multi-tasking? You kind of need to answer “yes” to all of those to get the most out of this release.

The International Trade Commission has found in favor of Nintendo in a case involving three companies claiming the gaming giant infringed on their patents with the creation of the Nintendo DS and 3DS handhelds.

In 2012, Technology Properties Limited LLC, Phoenix Digital Solutions LLC and Patriot Scientific Corporation - three companies specializing in patent licensing - filed suit against Nintendo, claiming that the company had infringed on a high-efficiency processor patent in the creation of its most recent handhelds. After nearly two years in court, Nintendo has emerged victorious.

"We are very pleased with the commission's determination, which confirmed the judge's finding that Nintendo's products do not infringe the asserted patent," said Nintendo of America vice president Richard Medway in a statement trumpeting the company's victory. "Nintendo's track record demonstrates that we vigorously defend patent lawsuits, including cases in the ITC, when we believe we have not infringed another party's patent. Nintendo continues to develop unique and innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others."

That track record Medway mentions does indeed demonstrate that Nintendo is an ardent defender of its intellectual property rights, though the company's history in the courtroom is far from spotless. Less than a year ago, Nintendo was ordered to pay $30.2 million for infringing on a 3D display patent held by Seijiro Tomita. [Image: Nintendo]

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Zoink! founder Klaus Lyngeled and Ripstone's co-founder Phil Gaskell...

NL: We will get to Stick It To The Man shortly, but we've got to ask about WeeWaa plush toy game for Wii. That seems like a fascinating project.

Lyngeled: WeeWaa was an idea I came up with when I was playing around with the Wiimote, I thought it'd be funny to do some kind of puppeteer game. Then I realised, why don't we just put the controller inside a plush toy? So we started on that, I was trying for a Nordic game grant which I won with the idea, so we did a prototype of the game and managed to sell it to Majesco in America. We pretty much had the whole game finished in the end, and we were submitting to Nintendo but they had to cancel at the end as they saw the Wii market was collapsing, basically.

NL: Would that have been 2009/2010?

Lyngeled: Yep. That was too bad. We actually did think about whether we should release it for Wii U, run a Kickstarter for it which would be kind of funny.

NL: At what stage did you decide to bring Stick It To The Man to Wii U? Was that a fairly recent decision or longer term?

Gaskell: Because the game's built in Unity there's an easy commercial decision to be made, because Unity's free to use on Wii U, there are no charges. So, just from a pure commercial angle it makes a lot of sense for a small outlay to put the game onto Wii U.

From a creative point of view I think the Wii U offers Klaus an opportunity to do something different with the experience using the GamePad, using the things that are unique about the Wii U. It let them be more creative than if it was ported to a regular console system that doesn't have those platform features.

Lyngeled: When we talked about doing a Wii U version we knew we'd have to use the GamePad, with the screen, and we thought it'd be cool to use it as a mind reading device. The way we've done it, which I think works really well and turned out good, much better than I expected, is that when you pick up the Wii U device it goes into mind-reading mode, so it feels when you pick it up or rest it down. So you can basically point around on the screen itself, pick characters, zoom in on their brains and pick which brain you want to read. So there's a specific mind-reading screen on the GamePad and the main screen on the TV.

This way it's much quicker to go from one brain to another if there are a lot of people around the same area. Then of course you have the mind-reading voice itself coming out of the GamePad, also, which I'm really happy with.

NL: You've now had a bit of experience with Wii U, Klaus, is it a platform you'd be interested in exploring in future? Or are there any other road-blocks or concerns for that?

Lyngeled: I really like it. I think it's a great move that they supported Unity, especially for us. For us it's easy to make sure we also, if we do more games, we'll also release on Wii U, it's no problem. It'll just be fun. I just hope it will sell more, but I'm really looking forward to the new titles they're releasing soon, Mario Kart, that's going to make a big difference for the Wii U.

But for the future sure, it was fun to do this one, we'd like to do more on Wii U.

We have no doubt that there's an audience of die-hard Metroidvania fans that wouldn't mind spending a weekend dicing up demons and monsters with Freyja, though we feel the shortcomings and missteps present keep this one from the greater things it eludes to. Wait for a sale or price cut if you're on the fence about making the purchase.
