Inazuma Eleven is one of the best role-playing experiences I've had in a long time, and more importantly, rekindled a youthful feeling I've grown to miss.

Digital distribution is increasingly becoming an accepted, and in some cases demanded, way for Americans to get their games, according to NPD Group data released today from its Exploring Digital Gaming report.

Based on a recent survey of more than 6,000 people in the US ages 13 and older, the group reported that 36 percent of the US population plays downloaded games on either a computer, console, or dedicated handheld gaming device like a 3DS or PlayStation Vita. A little less than half of that group has abandoned physical media entirely, as 16 percent said they only play digitally distributed games.

Way back in the mists of 2011, when the world was newly formed and virgin to such ideas as “crowd funding” “early access” and “XBOX One”, our very own John Walker gave his honest thoughts on The Book of Unwritten Tales. Despite translation flaws, his younger self enjoyed it, summing up with “An adventure this long is such a rare treat. One this enjoyable at the same time is almost unheard of.” Now developers King Art have returned to the series, after various departures, with a Kickstarter. The twist is that their game is already funded and slated for an early 2015 release. What this money is for is to improve it, a task usually left to stretch goals and bonus rewards. Their hilarious kickstarter video and some details on how it’s going are below.

Weapon Shop de Omasse is a breezy rhythm game, brimming with humor targeted at JRPG fans. I realize that's a niche within a niche, and it certainly won't be for everyone, but I loved it. And if that bizarre concept sounds even vaguely interesting, I bet you'll love it too.

We've talked about how Titanfall's NPCs make sure there's always something happening and there's always someone to shoot. But the "grunts" also have their own dialogue, and it's something more reminiscent of Halo than Call of Duty. Read more...

The repetition might be part of the joke, as the life of these blacksmiths involves weapon crafting, renting, and little else. Weapon Shop de Omasse is kind of like The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds but if you played as Ravio. The writing can be clever, but it’s not strong enough to carry the entire experience. With super simple gameplay, the only rewarding part of Weapon Shop de Omasse is its lighthearted story that isn’t all that memorable.

Gone Home was an inspired, beautifully heartfelt thing that clearly had a profound affect on people of multiple codes and creeds. It was powerful, delicate, and… we’ve probably said everything about it that it’s possible for one website largely made up of hairy men to say. At some point, it becomes time to move forward and explore new territory. That’s exactly what Steve Gaynor, Karla Zimonja, and the rest of the Gone Home team are doing right now: exploring. They don’t know precisely what form their next game will take just yet, but in a lengthy (and frankly, often very silly) interview, they let me inside their creative process. Go below to find out what lies beyond Gone Home for the Fullbright Company.

LOS ANGELES, CA (FEBRUARY 20, 2014) – Globally renowned Japanese game company LEVEL-5, best known for the critically acclaimed PROFESSOR LAYTON and NI NO KUNI, has released WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE, a comedic tribute to classic RPGs, in North America and Europe in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE was created by comedian Yoshiyuki Hirai whose well-known passion for and intimate knowledge of games and comics have led him to a variety of multimedia opportunities, including his current stint as a comic book artist. Before his rise to stardom as a comedian, Hirai wished to become a game creator, and WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE marks the debut of that dream. The game was initially released only in Japan as part of the four-game compilation GUILD01, and is the last of the four titles to be released in the Nintendo eShop in North America and Europe.

“It’s an incredible honor to have my title represent the conclusion of the GUILD series in the West,” said Yoshiyuki Hirai, creator of WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE. “The core of this game is ‘I’m forging and renting weapons to heroes. Will they be able to bring peace to the world with the weapons I’ve made!?’ Each hero has their own backstory and personal reasons for their quests which means that you need to think carefully about renting out your weapons... but what if you fail to do so? You’ll find out! The contrast between the seriousness of weapon-forging and the eccentric characters is sure to make you laugh, and maybe even stir up some sentiment. I hope you enjoy the game!”

About WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE:

WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE gives players a different perspective on classic RPGs by putting them in the shoes of Yuhan, a young apprentice in an unconventional weapon shop inside an RPG. Players will forge weapons in rhythm game fashion, rent them out to a hodgepodge of quirky heroes, and follow their quests on the Grindcast adventure stream. A hero’s success or failure depends on the quality and selection of the player’s weapon – a true masterpiece might end up saving the world!

WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE is now available in North America and Europe in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS for $7.99 / €7.99 / ₤7.19.

More information about WEAPON SHOP de OMASSE can be found online at http://level5ia.com/blackbox/weapon-shop-de-omasse/.
