I showed the last Wargame: Red Dragon trailer to a friend who is knowledgeable about games. As it drew to a close they turned to me and asked, “What kind of game is this?” It’s a large-scale real-time strategy game with a dynamic campaign map, multiplayer, hundreds of modernish military units, and taut tactical combat, but I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not that you can’t immediately tell from the trailers that it’s not, for example, a first-person shooter. I do know it means it looks visually impressive. I do know it means you should watch the latest trailer, twice.

Once to appreciate how it looks, and a second time to double check how the voice-over pronounces the world “stealth”. … [visit site to read more]

While Darksiders II has been on the NA Wii U eShop since it launched, the title was removed in Europe after THQ's closure. Looks like that's about to change, with Nintendo's hub page listing an EU eShop release for next week! Thanks to Tolis for the heads up.

A portion of a Nintendo Life review...

Steel Diver: Sub Wars features a highly enjoyable online multiplayer mode; that's something, perhaps, that the 3DS has missed so far. Since it's free, you have no excuse not to check it out — perhaps you'll even like it so much that you'll spend some money.

Play Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze in GAME Stores!

Donkey Kong returns this month in Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, coming to Wii U on 21st February. And we’ve teamed up with Nintendo for a series of sampling events in GAME Stores around the country.

On Friday 28th February from 10am to 5pm, nine stores will be welcoming gamers to come along and try out the new game, featuring Donkey, Diddy and the returning Dixie Kong as they battle together to stop the Vikings invading Tropical Island. Plus, if you’ve got a 3DS, bring it along to exchange StreetPass with other gamers and Nintendo staff!

Join GAME and Nintendo and play Tropical Freeze – it’s on like Donkey Kong!

Thanks to James for the heads up!

I used to review Counter-Strike maps as a teenager, for free, for fun, for fansites. If you’d have told me then that thirteen years later, I’d still be writing about them for fun, but as a career, I’d have said, “Well, obviously.” What else was I ever going to do?

Global Offensive’s new Operation Phoenix pack (or, “Pho3nix”, but I’d rather not) let’s you play eight top-voted community maps through the game’s competitive mode. … [visit site to read more]

Archer
This early-to-mid game unit excels at hitting weak points with bows and tricky movement. Archers are good attackers that can add effects to their attacks, be it debuffs, status conditions, etc.

Blacksmith
This master of weaponry can wear down opponents with repeated smashing. Can break enemies' defense, and shatter enemy power. They're a fairly powerful unit to acquire early game, but drop off in mid-to-late game.

Bondsman
With dapper hats and tuxedo outfits, Bondsmen are late-game units that require maxing out your relationship bond with their mother. They wield lances and unlike most other units, they use Bond Points for their magic attacks and heals instead of mana.

Diva
This pop idol-like musician is a stronger version of the minstrel. This support unit requires an extremely rare item to create. But in addition to buffing allies and debuffing enemies, she can also revive her teammates.

Gun Saint
Take a paladin, give him a gun, and you get a Gun Saint. This late-game unit requires a special rare drop, but with gold armor and a powerful weapon, the GS can penetrate any armor.

Lancer
Strong attacking class that excels at building Chain gauge quickly to help immobilize units. Deals an incredible amount of damage in the right team composition, and are available mid game.

Merchant
This early game unit is great for wheeling and dealing, as well as axing monsters right in their face. In addition to strong attacks, Merchants also have the ability to summon a shop to buy or sell items, in case you find yourself mid-dungeon without enough health or mana potions.

Ranger
Rangers are quick to adapt to a multitude of roles within a party. They have effective heals, and debilitating debuff attacks. Their defense also allows them to be solid protectors. Rangers are a good mid-game choice for all but the most specialized parties.

With dollops of patience and a sharpening of skills, any player can have a great time with Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. Lack that, and you'll be miserable. I recommend this game for players who want some pain—some pain wrapped in a beautiful adventure.

We're bullish about the importance of audio around here, but we're also passionate about saving money. Balking at spending $100 or even $300 on a headset was a frequent refrain in our Best Gaming Headset voting, and we can't blame anyone for not wanting to dive down that rabbit hole. The G430, a step down from the G35 and G930 that made it to the final round in our voting, is just $40 today. An easy and easy to swallow recommendation. [Amazon]Read more...
