Coming from a Nintendo Force interview with former RARE dev Chris Seavor...

"... I'm not even sure they [Nintendo] knew what they really had with Conker. Tim [Stamper] and Chris [Stamper] did and they said 'Yes, we want to make this'. And such was the trust between Rare and Nintendo that they were fine with that... Trust. A lovely concept, sadly lacking today with some publishers."

The industry certainly has become less focused on trusting devs and more interested in Metacritic scores. Sad to see that RARE and Nintendo parted ways, and now RARE is a shell of its former self.

On February 21, Twitch user Bananasaurus_Rex (the gaming community really does have the best handles) set a new high-score record in developer Mossmouth's much-loved roguelike, Spelunky. The history-making run took seven and a half hours to complete, with a final tally of $3,105,850.

Bananasaurus is known in the Spelunky community for being the first recorded player to beat the game's final boss using an eggplant in single-player mode, as well as being the first recorded player to have killed the game's ghost monster. Let me tell you about a moment in world five of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It's a little late in the game, but it's oh so typical (and not a spoiler, unless you count the placement of platforms as a spoiler). How you feel about this moment will determine how you feel about this game.Read more...

What a shitty review.

The overall recommendation that you should play it is not being questioned, Stephen is only defending the minute details of his experience. Yes I suppose there is universal standard, but it's just is there anything interesting in this game that outweighs the frustrating/boring parts and would the average reader feel the same way. I don't see why it needs to be any more specific than that.

Sundays are for listening to The Smiths, playing with virtual reality spaceships, and assembling a list of the week’s game scribblings while continuing to resist the urge to link to your own podcast.

  • This week was dominated by the re-structuring of Irrational Games. Our very own Rich Stanton takes to the Guardian to talk about the meaning of Irrational’s closure, holding up the company’s games and Levine’s comments as a mirror for what’s happening. Good quotes in there from Levine himself as well. “I love systems, I love board games and that’s all they are is systems. I think the challenge is that I probably have something more to say in the narrative space than I do in the system space, but who knows how that could combine? I mean maybe, we did this game called Freedom Force about superheroes, and one thing that I thought we did better than other superhero games was the narrative component. Superhero stories are soap operas, right? They take the characters and emotions and amplify them through the fantastical stuff, and without that character stuff – like without Uncle Ben dying in Amazing Fantasy #15 – Spider-Man isn’t interesting! Videogames often leave that on the table and make their games way more goofy than comic books actually are.” Thanks for the Spider-Man spoilers, Ken.

Coming from a GamesTM interview with David Cox, producer of the Castlevania: Lords of Shadows series...

I think those days (of 2D Castlevania games) are gone, yes. I think hardcore gamers would love to play another 2D Castlevania, but the reality is that it’s a very niche market and Konami really want this series to be mainstream again. We took this direction in order to reach that bigger audience, otherwise we would have carried on with the 2D approach. That’s not to say I don’t think there will ever be another 2D game in the series, it might happen but just not from MercurySteam. When you look at the future on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, I don’t think people want to play 2D games on those consoles. Core gamers may still want something like that, but there’s an expectation among the wider public for big, epic games.

CONSOLE WARS: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation is an upcoming book that details the fight between SEGA and Nintendo in the 90s. While that book itself will be interesting enough, it also seems that a movie adaptation is in the works. The film will be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Thanks to Josh for the heads up!

With the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 hype-train in full effect, I'm reminded of how many fantastic Castlevania games Nintendo systems have accommodated over the decades. Whether you prefer the old-school difficulty of yesteryear, or the Metroidvania gameplay which has breathed new life into the series, the Castlevania franchise has been very good to Nintendo fans.

You'll find many more game deals after the jump, for Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS systems. Thanks for reading!

Hexcells and its standalone expansion, Hexcells Plus, are now available on Steam for PC, Mac and Linux users.

Both games play a bit like the Picross series - players are presented with designs made out of hexagons at the start of each level. The black, numbered hexagons tell a player how many pieces of the final design are touching the black spaces, but players need to determine which of the orange hexagons are extra black hexagons and which are hidden blue hexagons. As players mark each orange space, the correct choices will turn blue, while miscalculations add to the Mistakes counter of a level.

Each game is $2.99, but they can also be bought in a bundle for $4.99. Hexcells seems like the sort of puzzler we would laugh off the complexity of, right before frying our brains over levels like this. [Image: Matthew Brown]

The Rocksmith 2014 DLC train keeps rollin' with five new Rise Against songs available for Ubisoft's guitar game. As always, the individual songs cost $2.99, while the 5-song pack will run $11.99. The songs chosen by Ubisoft to highlight the Chicago punk rock group are: "Prayer Of The Refugee," "Give It All," "Satellite," "Make It Stop (September's Children)" and "Swing Life Away."

"Swing Life Away" is a change from most of Rise Against's library, as well as most of Rocksmith 2014 in that it's recorded acoustically. So yeah. Take that to Trivial Pursuit night. You're welcome.
