Gaming peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz plans to join the mobile gamepad market with the upcoming release of the C.T.R.L.i, a Bluetooth-enabled, dual-analog controller with native support for iOS7 devices.

Keen eyes may observe that the C.T.R.L.i bears a striking resemblance to the controller bundled with the Mad Catz-branded MOJO microconsole released last year. The C.T.R.L.i uses the same basic shell as the MOJO's controller with an additional spring-loaded mount that supports current and future iOS devices.

The C.T.R.L.i will be priced at $80 when it hits retail in April.

It's terrifying how long video games have actually existed. Utterly terrifying. Even more terrifying (and hilarious) are the commercials used to sell video games. Just for fun I decided to trail back through history to unearth almost a commercial for almost every single home console ever released. From the Magnavox Odyssey to the PlayStation 4 and everything inbetween: this is the history of video games in commercial form. Enjoy!Read more...

The PAX East Indie Showcase stars six mobile games from independent studios around the world:
  • Crowman & Wolfboy, Wither Studios LLC: US
  • Duet, Kumobius: Australia
  • Framed, Loveshack: Australia
  • The Spookening, Modesty: Sweden
  • Tiny Dice Dungeon, Springloaded: Singapore
  • Wayward Souls, Rocketcat Games: US
The Indie Showcase at PAX East is a mobile-specific sampling of games, rather than the yearly lineup of higher-profile, mainly console and PC indie games in the PAX 10 at PAX Prime. This distinction is on purpose, Penny Arcade co-founder Jerry Holkins wrote in a blog post.

"It may not be apparent outside of my own mind, but the PEIS has a specific mission to promote games on mobile," he said. "PAX10 is more broad. But mobile is an especially scary place to make games right now, and I think there's good to be done thereby. Unlike a lot of games at a show like this, a lot of times you can just grab your phone out of your pocket and buy something you like right there. As magic tricks go, that's a pretty good one." Mega Bloks has a new round of figurines coming out, as you can see in the image above. These figurines revealed a few new characters, as well as vehicles for some of the playsets. While the characters are certainly a sneak peek at the upcoming SWAP Force or new game characters, could the vehicles be the 'game changer' that Activision was talking about?

So I've been wanting to play a new Metroid game for a while, as I'm a huge fan of the series. I have been ever since playing the original during my NES days.

(And yep, I was totally floored by the end credits reveal. To this day, still one of the best surprises in all of gaming.)

So when I say I've been seeking out Metroid-like titles for years, I'm talking years. My first was probably SMS Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, and I also have fond memories of NES Legacy of the Wizard. Of course, the Castlevania series eventually stepped up with a slew of quality titles - enough to coin the 'Metroidvania' co-credit - but sadly, physical Metroid-inspired releases have begun to dwindle. I've spotlighted some above, but it seems they're becoming more difficult to come by - especially for a good deal!

With digital, it's entirely a different story. Lots to choose from, with the Metroid style of gameplay clearly having had a profound impact on today's game developers. Look at Shantae: Risky's Revenge and Cave Story, to name only a couple. There are also a number of Virtual Console games which qualify, like Tail's Adventure and Blaster Master: Enemy Below.

So with digital at the forefront of Metroid inspired gaming anymore, Best Buy's 20% Off eShop Card sale - whereby eShop credit can be purchased at a nice discount - is all the more appealing to this grizzled old gamer. And hey, those Sega 3D Classics look mighty appealing, too. :)

What are your favorite Metroid inspired games? Share your recommendations in the comments, as we Metroid fans are always looking for more! And be sure to hit the jump for many more game deals today, for Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS. As always, thanks for reading!

The following information comes from a Polygon interview with musician and songwriter Brent "brentalfloss" Black and animator Oscar "Osuka" Diaz.

"Listening to the title theme for Metroid, though, I felt like there was real heart somewhere in there — some vulnerability that isn't explored in the actual gameplay or outward characterization and one day I was on tour in 2011 and bummed about not having seen my girlfriend in weeks, and I guess I put myself in the shoes of a bounty hunter missing her significant other." - Brentalfloss
"I [contacted] Brent Black in December 2011, asking if he needed a 3D designer for an album cover. And I sent to him my portfolio. He liked my animations and told me that he wanted to do a Metroid [video] for awhile ... I had fun with Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion as a kid, so working on a Metroid-based video with brentalfloss sounded like a fun ride." - Oscar Diaz
"This song ["Fight For Love"], inspired by highly expressive music and my actual personal loneliness at the time of writing, was written from the heart. The main difference for me [from my previous work] is that I don't generally feel vulnerable writing funny material, but writing heartfelt stuff is extremely scary for me." - Brentalfloss

EA COO Peter Moore is betting on a dominating role for digital revenue in video games. Speaking at the Digital Entertainment World conference, Moore said (via GI.biz) he expects digital sales to fully eclipse retail numbers in two years.

He likened the rising prominence of downloads as a type of "creative destruction," in which an industry is unable to regulate the evolving purchasing habits of its consumers. Moore compared the scenario to the music industry, which he says is still recovering from its shift away from relying primarily on physical disc sales for revenue to a more download-centric model.

Moore relates that EA's "customers" used to be retailers but, in the global always-online environment of the modern era, those "customers" are now the players. This has caused EA to triple its customer service operations over the last five years and even affected the company's marketing efforts - TV advertising spend is down and online and social advertising is up. Social media is more important than ever to EA.

EA just reported third-quarter earnings for its fiscal 2014. While the massive games publisher suffered an overall net loss of $308 million during the period, digital sales accounted for over half of all earnings. EA attributed this big upswing to a 60 percent increase in transactions in EA's lineup of collectible card-based simulations, FIFA Ultimate Team, Madden NFL Ultimate Team and NHL Ultimate Team.
