Candy Crush Saga developer King has withdrawn its trademark application for the word "candy," reversing a controversial move and potentially leaving developers free to create candy-themed mobile games without fear of legal action.

King requested abandonment of its broad trademark on February 24, following a recent opposition statement from the International Game Developers Association. King's trademark was approved for publication in January.

"Our IP is constantly being infringed and we have to enforce our rights and to protect our players from confusion," a King representative stated following the trademark's publication approval.

The trademark application's complete history is documented under the "Prosecution History" subheading here at the United States Patent and Trademark Office website. King's related attempt to trademark the word "saga" remains under suspension.

Game Center CX The Movie is one part terrible movie and one part exciting TV episode. But while watching Arino play Mighty Bomb Jack is exciting, it's hardly new as you have been able to watch that struggle on DVD for half a decade.

The following info and quotes come from a Polygon interview with producer Nick Ricks...

- Bilbo Baggins joins a band of dwarves as they fight to reclaim their lost kingdom
- Camaraderie is key for the adventurers
- When working together, dwarves can move heavy obstacles, reach new heights and deliver wicked blows to bosses

“For us, it was the sense that the dwarves are really just thrown out from their home in such peril and adversity. Smaug has stolen their ancient homeland. They’re just outcasts. What’s so amazing about them is their collaboration. How they stick together through thick and thin despite their bickering. We thought that was a really important, emotional moment throughout all the films which we naturally wanted to capture. The fact they they do combine and work together seemed fit for the idea of Lego play. You combine bricks, you build things together. They seemed like a natural fit.”

- Demo set in Goblin Town
- In the demo, the group was split into two separate parties
- The game automatically swapped between the two at key points in exploration
- Pick your own individual character as each group progresses (like Thorin or Gandalf)
- Do so by choosing their portrait from a radial menu
- Each dwarf has their own abilities and preferred weapons
- These include a bow and arrow combination to a giant hammer
- Some are better equipped to deal with specific threats
- Teaming up can be done with the nearest dwarf and good timing
- Coordinate attacks with bosses with the right button press
- Stack dwarves in a totem pole to reach a new area
- Only covers the first two Hobbit films
- TT Games has plans involving a third

“At the moment we’re completely focused on making Lego The Hobbit the best it can be. We know there’s another film coming out, and we’ve got very excited plans about that, but I’m afraid there’s nothing I can say today.”

While it can be found for cheaper on mobile devices and doesn’t seem to take significant advantage of the hardware, its $3.99 price tag on the eShop still feels very reasonable for the thoughtful and sophisticated experience it offers.

One man's space trash is another man's space station in Habitat, a PC, Mac and Linux game that takes place in the cluttered arena of Earth's orbit, far in humanity's future. Players must use the junk floating around Earth - both manmade and alien - to manufacture a space base and manage its citizens. It's a strategy game with defense elements, since any piece of trash can be used to create kinetic weapons and fight off invading enemies.

Any trash - including the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty, apparently.

Habitat comes from 4gency, an indie studio founded by Charles Cox, former senior program manager of the Xbox Advanced Technology Group at Microsoft, where he helped launch the Xbox One. In his resignation letter penned in September, Cox offered the following reason for his departure:

"There is no question in my mind that the adventure we have been on with Xbox One has been the greatest, most challenging of my career so far, and yet, a dream, nurtured since childhood, looms ever larger ahead of me, demanding I take action: to dive in as full-time founder of my own independent game studio. The time is right, the plan is set, and in true indie fashion, the passion is unstoppable. The parachute, of course, is nonexistent, but those things are overrated."

Habitat will be playable at GDC 2014 from March 19 - 21, at GDC Play booth #100 in the North Hall. 4gency plans to launch a Kickstarter in April to fund development of Habitat.

Many of you are probably looking forward to the final film in The Hobbit Trilogy, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, hitting theaters in December – I know I am. The PS3 bundle is perfect for gamers of all ages. You can join Bilbo, Gandalf, and Thorin Oakenshield’s Company of Dwarves as they journey across Middle-earth on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Kingdom of Erebor from the Dragon Smaug. Visit some of the film trilogy’s most iconic locations, including The Shire, Rivendell, and the Misty Mountains, where Bilbo first meets Gollum and discovers The One Ring. Along the way, you can test your mettle with Treasure Quests, mine for gems, discover loot from enemies and craft powerful magical items. The game offers a different take on The Hobbit film universe, infusing the legendary journey with the familiar humorous gags we have come to love from LEGO games, as well as the ability to build immense new LEGO structures.

Like Gandalf, we’re looking for someone to share in the adventure. Join us!

This information comes from a Google translated interview with Francisco Téllez de Meneses, the creator of Unepic...

In 3DS options are very limited because the screen is too small and because the graph has only 6Mb memory. Unepic now uses more than 150Mb graphics textures. Besides programming is not optimized (because a PC is very powerful) CPU and 3DS not think I could with it (with WiiU and just going to go to 60fps). About Vita, is closer to Wii U in TV-Off that both 3DS screen size and resources, so that there are chances of seeing a porting. "

Meneses also discussed another upcoming project that is a 'brother' to Unepic that will eventually head to Wii U.

"Right now I'm working on another project using the engine and gameplay Unepic based in a futuristic environment. As of Warcraft to Starcraft, or Terraria to Starbound.
In this new project I will try to improve the parts that have more limped Unepic. So This new project that is not a Unepic 2 but the "brother Unepic" (which still has no name)., using the same engine as Unepic, would on the same platforms including the Wii U. "
