A portion of a Joystiq review...

Thankfully, even when the blades are dull, the writing is sharp. Even so, many jokes are of the family-friendly sitcom variety, and play off of RPG tropes. If you've never laughed at the convoluted plots, overdramatic heroes or NPC behavior seen so often in the role-playing genre, this weapon may not be for you.

Coming from Ubisoft's Hugues Ricour...

"It's not just making games for the sake of making games. There's definitely a conscious mandate to make sure we make fun experiences that focus on gameplay, that we enrich people's lives, and that we connect them together. We have to innovate. It's a question of survival. We have to feel fresh and different every year."

Innovation is one thing, but how do you quantify life enrichment? Is it people saying that they have fun with your games? Is it the building of a brand? What if a game sells poorly, but is very well received by those that purchase?

Sony Santa Monica, the studio best known for its work on the God of War series, has suffered layoffs today. Sony representatives confirmed the dismissals with IGN, citing "resource re-alignment against priority growth areas" within Sony Worldwide Studios as the cause. The statement reads:
"SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted."
Sony Santa Monica most recently shipped God of War: Ascension. Currently, the studios is working on three collaborations due to launch this year: Hohokum with Honeyslug; The Order: 1886 with Ready at Dawn; and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture with The Chinese Room. It's currently unclear how these layoffs will affect ongoing projects, so we've contacted Sony for clarification. We wish the best of luck to those affected.

I am amazed at just how far people are willing to go to ruin a good experience. Case in point, the chat bots that are popping up in Twitch Play Pokemon. These bots aren't looking for 'a good time', nor are they telling you about singles in your area. These bots are forcing scripts in chat that are out to impede any progress that legitimate TPP chatters are trying to make. How sad of a situation is that?

Persona 5 just got announced for 2015. That means that there will be at least one game that's a strong contender for getting people to turn on their PS3s next year. If new games keep coming for Sony's previous video game console in 2015, the PS3 will have had a life cycle of at least 10 calendar years. Maybe even more. So, how about a scrapbook of sorts, filled with standout games from each year of the PS3's existence?Read more...

To celebrate the milestone of free-to-play mobile game Deadman's Cross being downloaded more than one million times, Square Enix is giving away extra in-game currency through February 28 to all players who download and register the game.

Deadman's Cross, which launched earlier this month, is a first-person shooter with card-based RPG elements set in the year 2030. Zombies have arisen and are doing what zombies do: snacking on us tasty humans. Players must navigate the abandoned streets of New Livingston (puns!) with only a high-powered rifle and a deck of cards in search of the apocalypse's cause.

Killing zombies (or "deadmen," as they're called in the game) adds them to your deck of cards, though the game is also supported by micro-transactions if your earned cards just aren't getting the job done. Deadman's Cross is the spiritual successor to Guardian Cross, a similar free-to-play card game where players capture and battle wild beasts. [Image: Square Enix]

Triumph Studios' turn-based strategy game Age of Wonders 3 will launch on PC next month, on March 31. The fantasy game was originally due late last year, but had to be pushed back for "additional polish."

All those who pre-purchase the game through GOG or Steam will be guaranteed an additional mission, playable in both single-player and multiplayer. Called "Elven Resurgence," this mission takes travelers to Heartwood Forest - once a meeting place for the Elven High Court, the forest is now an abandoned battlefield where scattered clans of Elves wage war for its control.

Age of Wonders 3 will be available in both a standard version for $40 and a deluxe edition for $45. The latter tosses in the Age of Wonders 3 soundtrack and an additional single-player mission revolving around eight lords feuding over a discovered dragon's egg.
