There was a time when I found ARPGs exciting, my buttocks glued to the tiny swivel-stool before the one-armed bandits of Diablo II and Titan Quest, hoping that they would spew shiny loot into my lap. In recent years I’ve managed to shake the habit. I poked at Diablo III for a while but kept my distance and even though I enjoyed Path of Exile in its early days, I haven’t felt compelled to revisit its blighted shore. Grim Dawn tempts me though. My memories of Titan Quest have become rosier than dawn’s fingers and Alec’s impressions of the team’s long-awaited follow-up were pleasing. Act II of the Early Access release is now available, and it introduces choice and consequence.

A leaked image shows what European console players see instead of the scenes censored out of South Park: The Stick of Truth. Clearly, Michaelangelo's David is not impressed.

The text below (see the NSFW full image below the break) describes in blunt detail what players aren't seeing, and that comprises seven scenes removed from the European Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, each around 20 seconds long. In Australia it's much the same deal, except the still image is of a crying koala instead of David.

When asked about the European censorship, an Ubisoft spokesperson told Eurogamer "this was a market decision." As Eurogamer notes, Ubisoft's decision may be tied to ensuring the game was fit for release in Germany, where stricter guidelines on games are enforced.

The Stick of Truth brings its mix of indelicate humor and Obsidian roleplay to retail shelves this week: first North America on March 4, then Australia March 6, and Europe March 7.

For the most part, players can explore the world of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn at their own leisure. But what would an MMO be without some group content? In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to the numerous activities that can only be mastered in groups of four to 24.

The realm of Eorzea, with its three city-states, is far-reaching. It has many hidden corners and crevices in which the wicked can find a welcome foothold. Be it the manor of a lady, so struck with vanity that she exchanged sanity for it, or an abandoned mine overrun with beastmen — adventurers are in constant demand, and there’s always something to do.

Throughout the game, adventurers will also come across the so-called Primals. How these god-like beings are called into the realm is an important part of the storyline, so we won’t give too much away.

The best known example of the sheer destructiveness of the Primals was the coming of the Seventh Umbral Era, brought forth by the elder primal Bahamut, who was freed from his prison in the lesser moon Dalamud. A single, massive battle with Bahamut reshaped the face of Eorzea forever. What happened with Bahamut after the battle, no one knows…

Dungeons

Adventurers don’t just become famous by fulfilling the quests of the general populace. Have you ever heard of dungeons? Enemy-infested abodes and holes in the ground. What does that mean for you? Simple — grab three of your friends and cleanse them, for fame and fortune!

Dungeons are instanced. That means only you and your group — with a total size ranging from 4 to 8 — will be able to enter. They are generally harder than what you’d find in the outside world, but they also give unique rewards like equipment that you can’t find anywhere else, and massive amounts of experience points.

So what if you’ve missed one? Or out-levelled a dungeon? No problem; each Dungeon has a “maximum level.” Should you exceed it, you will be levelled down to the appropriate level.

And you don’t have to run to the dungeon every time you want to enter it. After you’ve unlocked the dungeon, you’ll find it in the Duty Finder, where you can queue up with random players — although you may find it preferable to build your own group.

And what about the endgame? Well, about a quarter of the dungeons are Level 50 based, and some of them are available in hard mode — but we wouldn’t want to spoil the fun, now would we?

Raids

What would endgame be without Raids? Right now, there are two in the game: the Labyrinth of the Ancients within the Crystal Tower, a 24-man raid for three distinctive groups of eight, and The Binding Coil of Bahamut, an 8-man raid for the most dedicated groups. But it also delivers the best equipment currently available…

The Binding Coil of Bahamut is for those of you that are experienced in group play and want a real challenge, as only a few groups have managed to push beyond the final boss at this point.

With future content updates, which are currently planned to be released every three months, we will constantly expand the endgame landscape.

Primals

Throughout your travels, you’ll come across the Primals — god-like beings, called to the world by the beast tribes through means initially unknown. These challenging fights never fail to impress, and many adventurers have found their calling in sending these infernal beasts back to where they came from.

But it doesn’t end with that… Not only are there Hard modes for the Primals, but also the elusive and extremely difficult to master Extreme modes. Do you think you’ve got what it takes?

All of this content is available to you conveniently through a tool called the Duty Finder, so you can re-experience them at any time, help friends to master them, and find companions to battle your way to the top.

Enjoy your time in Eorzea!

It's no daylight robbery: Thief is a deserving UK chart leader, especially since we're knee deep in the Q1 downpour of new releases. The Eidos Montreal game fended off plenty of competition to record the second highest sales for a No.1 game this year, and 75 percent of those were on PS4 and Xbox One.

The new releases that fell short of the crown jewels include Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare in 4th, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 in 10th, and placing just outside the top ten is PS3 HD-em-up Tales of Symphonia: Chronicles in 13th. Konami may've been hoping to see the second Lords of Shadow place higher, but it's still the second biggest debut for the franchise (in Chart Track history), only topped by the first game.

I still don’t know what MOTA stands for. I mean, obviously it’s a play on MOBA, but is Jagex branding Transformers Universe as a Multiplayer Online Transformer Arena, or is there more to it than that? Is MOTA supposed to sound like “motor” when said aloud? Is it also “atom” spelled backward on purpose? We’re still in the dark (of the moon) on so much. But today we’re at least getting a look at one sorta important aspect of the MMO-abruptly-turned-battle-arena: how it, you know, plays. Unsurprisingly, you can turn into a car, so it’s a MOBA with mobility or something (hah). Also, it looks rather action-y compared to the likes of LoL and DOTA, something that stands to set it apart at least a little. Go below for two new trailers.

When I first heard about Steam Family Sharing, I – like any rational, functional adult human – assumed it involved temporarily swapping families with another Steam user. Imagine my surprise (and, let’s face it, horror) when it turned out that I’d be able to share my game library with other human beings. Disgusting! Unnatural! An abomination! Steam libraries are sacred property, and also I really don’t want people trying to comprehend why I own Petz Dogz 2, Secret of the Magic Crystal, and the entire Postal series. Down that path lies only madness. But here we are. Steam Family Sharing is a thing, and it’s now available to all Steam users.

I didn’t see this coming. Interceptor, the Danish company that recently announced a Duke Nukem ARPG and released the Rise of the Triad remake last year, have bought Apogee Software Ltd (aka the legal name of 3D Realms). This surprises me because I didn’t think I’d be writing any stories about 3D Realms in 2014, except perhaps when they licensed Shadow Warrior out for a sequel to the splendid remake. But the senescent studio has already been making headlines in this, the 27th year of its existence. They’re not exactly the kind of headlines that would ordinarily lead to a buy-out though.

I haven’t played enough of new Thief to judge it fully one way or the other, but I can’t imagine many people disagreeing with the sentiment that The City has seen better days. With the creative guidance of Looking Glass, The City was one of the weirdest and most distinct environments in fiction, embroidered with lore that gave it spiritual, social and political character. The new Thief’s City is predictable and comparatively barren.

While Garrett makes a new home in steampunk Gotham, the latest screenshots of immersive stealth sim Tangiers show evidence of a greater visual imagination than the hours of Thief that I’ve played. These are astonishing landscapes and I insist that you click on every single one to see the full size versions.

The following comes from PlatinumGames creative producer JP Kellams...

Without getting into some stuff that is both business and confidential, the simple question I’d like to ask you is, ‘Do you want to play Bayonetta 2?’ Bayonetta 2 would not exist without Nintendo white knighting that project. So while I totally understand that people want to play it on the platforms that they’ve played it on previously, we really wanted to make Bayonetta 2.

But if you were going to sell a game on a Nintendo platform, what publisher would you choose? Right, Nintendo. Right? So if you’re going to sell a game on a Nintendo platform, the publisher that you want to be with is Nintendo because they know how best to service their audience and they’re going to do the best job of explaining your game to that platform. You very rarely see huge, major third-party successes on Nintendo platforms because it’s really hard to fight against Mario, right? It’s why Universal isn’t as big as Disney. I mean, it’s really hard to fight somebody on that kind of turf, so…

We really wanted to make Bayonetta 2. And Bayonetta 2 is a project that we were passionate about. And when we couldn’t… when the business situation changed and we couldn’t make it the way that we were originally planning on making it, we definitely wanted to make sure that our project survived. I’ve seen Bayonetta 2 – I look at it every single day of my life when I’m in the office. It’s really cool and the world is going to be a better place because Bayonetta 2 is in it.

I spend a lot of time on Twitter seeing people get really angry, ‘Why is it not on PS3 and 360?’ Right? So kind of the way it went was, ‘Why do we have to buy a Wii U for one game? Why isn’t it on PS3 or 360?’ And now that the Xbox One and the PS4 are out, it’s ‘Why isn’t it on PS4 or Xbox One?’ So then it’s not about buying a piece of hardware, it’s just that you didn’t want it on the Wii U.

And that’s cool, I mean maybe that system’s not for you, or maybe that platform isn’t what you want to play games on, but we really want to make Bayonetta 2 and we think it’s going to be a fun game and the people who do play it are going to really enjoy it and I think that we made the right decision to make sure that game survived. I mean I’d rather be in a world with Bayonetta 2 than without.
