Like millions of hapless people around the world, you have the apartment set from Seinfeld emblazoned on your eyelids. You blink and there it is, waiting. You'll never not know what it looks like. Now, if you own an Oculus Rift headset, you can strap it onto your head and walk around it. It's almost like you're inside Kramer's head, wandering around for something to eat.Read more...

Oh gaming industry, even during the early year release doldrums, you never pull punches on good old fashioned drama. In the red corner, we have Rise of the Triad developer Interceptor, whose burgeoning brand roster now includes the smoldering remains of original Duke Nukem creator 3D Realms, and in the blue corner we have Borderlands developer and current Duke owner Gearbox. Gearbox, of course, is suing Interceptor because of Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a gum-assing, kick-chewing ARPG it doesn’t believe Interceptor has the rights to develop. But, in the wake of its 3D Realms purchase, Interceptor has told RPS that it thinks it’s completely in the right.

Each Monday, Chris Livingston visits an early access game and reports back with stories about whatever he finds inside. This week, island survival in Under the Ocean.

Where tropical trees once stood, only stumps remain. Beaches are covered with the corpses of crabs, caves littered with the shattered remnants of boulders. An accidental fire burns, warming no one, near a crate stuffed with forgotten items. This island was once beautiful, serene, a paradise. Then I arrived, bringing the apocalypse with me. The apocalypse called crafting. And it all began because I wanted to eat a chicken. … [visit site to read more]

A portion of a Gamezone interview with Big Red Button's Bob Rafei...

GameZone: How does Sonic Boom make use of the four characters? The game features co-op. Is that the focus of the game, or do you swap through characters in single player?

Bob Rafei: The game does feature co-op, which we will go into further detail at E3.

GZ: Will the game take advantage of the Wii U in any unique ways?

BR: We’re using some of the unique features but you will have to wait until E3 for specific details.

The following comes from a USGamer interview with Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe and Retro's Michael Kelbaugh and Vince Joly...

Tanabe on tutorials

"Personally, I really, really detest tutorials. When I pick up a game, I want to play it! So when a game is holding my hand, telling me 'Hey, do this,' and 'Hey, do that,' I'm like, will you just let me play already!?' For games that I'm working on, I do not want to include tutorials. Think back to the older generation of games — those games did not include tutorials. It could be because some of those games were really simple, but, players would learn the control scheme, they would learn what to do and how to do it, and all of that was very carefully calculated by the designers. I believe the addition text-based tutorials really is just a way for the developer to work around having to put in the work necessary to create a game that doesn't need that tutorial in the first place."

Kelbaugh on DKCTF difficulty

"If we had made it easier, it really wouldn't have been a Donkey Kong Country game. So the challenge was 'How do we make it true to the franchise of Donkey Kong Country yet make it more accessible for less-skilled players?' And we added features to make it more accessible for a younger audience... These features are at the liberty of the player to choose: You can choose to play without those features — at a higher skill level — or you can choose to use features which make the game a little more accessible."

Kelbaugh on Metroid

"You're not going to find a larger bunch of Metroid of Metroid Prime fans than at Retro studios. We'll be lucky to someday, maybe, work on another one. There's a lot of people in the studio left over from Metroid Prime that are very passionate about Metroid... If the fans keep asking, then maybe we'll answer."

Think back on the calm, golden plains of Journey, and remember the joy of seeing players garbed in red cloaks, happily exploring the beautiful world around you. Now, imagine those players as Agent Smiths, some of them controlled by AI, some controlled by players - and no real way to tell who's who. Oh, and the Smiths aren't popping into your game to accompany you on a mesmeric journey of discovery. They want to shoot you dead, Mr. Anderson, very dead.

I'm not sure that's how Get Even clicked into the mind of The Farm 51's Wojciech Pazdur, but it aligns the inspirations he's trying to marry in the PS4, Xbox One, and PC first-person shooter, all under the umbrella of "what is real?" The plot - which Pazdur wants to keep mysterious - explores modern themes of different realities and memory, but the play takes this blurring of the lines one stage further: The enemies you face in Get Even aren't just AI - they could be human - but in theory there's no real way of knowing. Did you just shoot an Agent Smith, or another person plugged into the Matrix?

My excuse for not spotting the latest video of Infinite Space 3: Sea of Stars is a worthy one. I’ve been too busy playing Out There on my Android CleverPhone. Like the Infinite Space series, it’s a mysterious RPG that drops the player in space, surrounded by the unknown. You should try it and I shall try to find out if it’s still coming to PC, as was originally planned. Enough of that for now though because the new video for Sea Of Stars contains plenty of information to drool over, including diplomacy, alien life and homeworld shipyards. The beta release is planned for the end of March.
