Nearly a year after its debut on the Xbox 360, the HBO Go app will finally make its PlayStation 3 debut later today.

Like the other existing iterations of the app, HBO Go on PlayStation 3 allows HBO subscribers to watch the premium channel's programs without the aid of a cable box, including standout hits like Game of Thrones, True Detective and Girls. While HBO subscriptions are only available by paying additional fees to your cable provider, the HBO Go app can be downloaded from the PlayStation Network Store at no charge.

As we reported previously, HBO CEO Richard Plepler has also stated plans to launch HBO Go on the PlayStation 4, though there's still no word on when that might happen. [Image: PlayStation.blog]

I wanted to know what state Space Engineers was in, because it’s been a few months since I last tried it out and it was already pretty impressive back then. How much could a game about building space ships and flying them change in a few months?

Well, on my first playthrough I was slinging ships across the void, watching as they met and crumpled and cooing at the damage model and simple building tools. Since then they’ve added multiplayer and Steam Workshop support, which was how I ended I ended up flying a spaceship the form of a shark into the crotch of a monolithic Homer Simpson. I apologise in advance. … [visit site to read more]

In the first release of Gemology there will be two primary game modes, tentatively referred to as 1 and 2. The first sees pre-made levels arranged of stone with small glistening gems protruding from each side. The player's objective is to remove all of said stones from the room by filling in each row with gems. The catch? The player does not control the gems nor any other object. Gems appear on stage through rocks that periodically 'cave in'. By tapping on the rocks with the GamePad's stylus the rock breaks and the gems appear and fall according to natural laws of physics (plus or minus a few adjustments). Unlike traditional puzzles which rely on rapid thinking and quick movements, Gemology instead favours patience and good timing. Instead of commanding the rocks and gems, the player guides them.

The second mode is more simple and geared towards a more casual experience. The playing field attached with the two pillars is filled about 2/3 of the way up with gems of all different shapes and sizes. These gems are slowly but surely falling into a pool of lava and the more gems that make it in, the higher the lava rises. The objective here is to tap a gem and drag it over to another gem of the same colour, thereby fusing the two. This can be done infinitely but at the risk of allowing more gems into the pool. There is no way to lower the lava and as your score increases so does the gems' speed of descent into the lava. Shoot for a high score and repeat. More gems appear on screen again through rocks that periodically 'cave-in' and can be obtained by again tapping on the rocks and breaking them apart.

There are plans for extensive DLC including an online multiplayer of the latter game mode including a handful of fun attack methods to use on your opponent, a stage builder as well as leaderboards, Mii usage and other fun little details.

A portion of a GameSpot interview with Retro CEO Michael Kelbaugh and Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe...

"If we're going to create an online component for Donkey Kong, we really need to do it right and not shoehorn in, 'Oh, let's play Dixie remotely.' That just wasn't an objective for Tropical Freeze. So if we were really go back and create an online environment, I think we owe it to the fans to do it better than just making online co-op. We really need to put some thought and resources into doing it the right way.

If we were to make a full online experience, I'd want to spend time to do it and make sure that we stay true to the franchise and incorporate this new feature in the right way and I'm not sure that this game is the right way to start Donkey Kong Country Online [laughs]. I'm really a purist at heart, especially when it comes to Donkey Kong Country, and I'd want to approach it the right way." - Kelbaugh
"This is a personal opinion, but if I'm playing with somebody, I think it's just a heck of a lot more fun to be sitting in the same room as that person rather than playing with somebody at a distance and I think it's especially true for Nintendo games; we have a history of families playing together, whether that's the parents playing with the children or the children playing with their siblings. And I think with Donkey Kong, that's something that we preferred. We really wanted to support that style of play." - Tanabe

Square Enix's haunting detective game Murdered: Soul Suspect will launch June 3 in North America, and will arrive in Europe and other PAL regions on June 6. The game will launch simultaneously on five platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Murdered: Soul Suspect was originally planned to launch earlier this year before being pushed past March. Developed by Airtight Games, the studio behind Dark Void and Quantum Conundrum as well as funky Ouya roguelike Soul Fjord, the game places players in the gumshoes of Ronan O'Connor, a detective that sets out to find his own killer. The sort-of-dead O'Connor has the ability to possess others, reading their minds and looking through their eyes without being noticed. [Image: Square Enix]

Invasion of the Ancients, all new content for Drox Operative is Now Available on Steam!

Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients is the first expansion for Drox Operative. Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Mac.

Before the Drox ruled the galaxy, before they were even sentient, there were older races now known as the Ancients. Using their Operatives, the Drox crushed and enslaved most of these races. The rest fled known space. When the Drox turned on their own Operatives, the Drox were utterly destroyed. Newer races emerged and thrived in the power void, never knowing the menace waited. Seizing their chance, the Ancients are invading to take their rightful place in the galaxy, as rulers! Thirsting for revenge, the Ancients can't harm the extinct Drox, but they can crush the next best thing, the Drox Operatives.

The Ancient enemies are back! Can you defend the Drox Operative Guild and younger races against the Invasion of the Ancients?

A portion of a Gamasutra interview with Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham...

GS: What do you think contributes to your games' success on the eShop platform, versus, say, Steam or PSN?

JW: We are a very small company, and not in a position to spend money on advertising at this time. We rely on word of mouth between players, and news announcements from the press on our games and our development progress. The Nintendo media is very active and passionate, and very supportive of indie developers.

The support we receive from the shop owners themselves helps tremendously. Nintendo's support of Mutant Mudds on the 3DS release was amazing. It got great placement on the eShop front page, and was even included with their online advertising for a period of time along with Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force, and Dillion's Rolling Western.

The amount of exposure that Mutant Mudds Deluxe received on the Wii U eShop has also been incredible with large, medium, and smaller banners promoting our game for a considerable amount of time on the eShop front page long after the game was released. Even though I would like it, I don't expect all of our games to receive this sort of treatment. I know not every game of ours can be promoted this way. There's not enough real estate on the front page to support every game equally, unfortunately. But, the fact of the matter is that exposure on the front page is instrumental in selling games. It can make all of the difference.

Yes, this is a roundabout way of saying Nintendo promoted Mutant Mudds more than Steam and Sony did. I do not fault Sony or Steam for not promoting our game as well as Nintendo did. It is not their job or responsibility to promote our games. Steam and Sony are juggling a ton of content and promote what they can and what they want to. It is what it is. But, I do believe this played a large part in the current sales numbers on each platform.

GS: A lot of devs feel that Nintendo comes off as more "closed off" than Sony or Microsoft, especially when it comes to indies. Would you agree it's a bit tougher for indies to get their footing with Nintendo?

JW: No, I strongly disagree with that statement. Nintendo is great to work with and easy to get a hold of. Nintendo's developer application process is easier now than it ever has been. The big difference is that Nintendo haven't announced it from the highest mountain, like Sony have, which they really should do. I don't see how anyone can say Nintendo is more "closed off" than Microsoft, when Microsoft doesn't even allow indies to self-publish on the Xbox 360.

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Nintendo's Takashi Tezuka...

NL: The art style of the Super NES title was memorable for its hand-drawn aesthetic; was it a technical challenge to reproduce that with 3D on the 3DS?

Tezuka-san: It took a lot of back and forth before we were able to create a world whose hand-drawn style was distinct from the previous title. Implementing the 3D effect also required a lot of time fine-tuning how the game looked, to make sure there were no conflicts between sections that should be appearing in the background and those that should be appearing in the foreground. We couldn’t have done it without the hard work of the development team! It all looks and feels completely natural so I think it’s quite difficult for people playing to really appreciate the work that went into it. It’s a real pleasure for us that you singled this out to ask us about!
