Smallville certainly has its ups and downs, landing on io9 lists for Best Cliffhangers and Worst Final Battles, but the show remains a must-watch for Superman fans that won't struggle to pull on your fanboy heartstrings. Today you can pick up all ten seasons for $110, which is the lowest this set has gone for. [Amazon]Read more...

With Zeno Clash developers ACE Team at the helm, Abyss Odyssey will no doubt take place in quite an odd world, but it definitely won’t take place in Oddworld, even if the title does look a bit like Abe’s Oddysee. The newly announced game is a side-scroller like Oddworld’s first, but ACE Team are sticking to their principles by concentrating on creatures engaging in fisticuffs. Taking place in a randomised world, Abyss Odyssey is a beat ‘em up in which every enemy has a full moveset and enough artificial gumption to offer a challenge. This is demonstrated by means of a video showing a lady fighting a skeleton.

Dark Souls II continues a long tradition of games that will challenge even the most veteran of gamers. You’ll explore, experiment, and die many times throughout your quest. While it would be against From Software’s design philosophy to give you a detailed map of the world and a full explanation of the game’s story, we did want to give you a few pointers before you go beyond death come March 11th on PS3.

A few basic changes exist within Dark Souls II that even the Souls veterans might want to know before venturing into the land of Drangleic:

  • Fast Travel: Bonfire’s serve as the “checkpoints” in Dark Souls II. As soon as you light a new Bonfire, you’re able to travel between that fire and any other Bonfire that you’ve lit.
  • Leveling: Spending hard-earned souls to level up can only happen with the Emerald Herald, a specific NPC you’ll need to return to each time you wish to seek more power.
  • Welcome to Majula: Soaked in eerie sunlight, you’ll be roaming around the hub town of Majula early on in your quest. Majula houses the Emerald Herald, vendors, merchants, and other persons of interest that will help you piece together the many stories of Drangleic.
  • Death Hurts: Every time you die, you’ll lose a tiny piece of your maximum health as your body decays. You can restore your humanity and stave off the Curse by consuming a Human Effigy. Use these wisely.
Know Your Stats

Dark Souls II continues to put an emphasis on player choice. Whether you want a tattooed spellcaster, a 7′ tall pyromancer who also fancies a greatbow, or a stocky crusader who wields a hammer and uses holy magic to smite his foes, the choice is yours.

Many character statistics and their properties have carried over from Dark Souls, but there are some new additions. On the Player Status screen you can press Select and navigate the menu for more a more detailed explanation. One new addition to Dark Souls II is Adaptability. Adaptability affects your character’s Movement Speed, Resistances, and more. Another addendum to the Dark Souls II mechanics is Attunement, granting increased casting speed for Spells, Miracles, and Hexes.

Any character build in Dark Souls II can be “good,” but an understanding of the different statistics and their effects will help you decide where that next point goes.

Two Swords Are Better Than One?

Dual-wielding is now possible with your Dark Souls II characters. You can wield a weapon in either hand, or in both. This provides you with even more options to choose from while cutting through the Undead. Will you give up that sturdy shield for even more offense? Be sure to experiment with different weapon combinations to learn the new attack patterns and animations.

Durability and You

Your equipment will wear over time, slowly losing durability as you take hits and inflict wounds. One thing to be careful of is scraping your blade against hard surfaces. If you’re continually banging on the walls with your Falchion, the durability will drain much faster. Resting at a Bonfire will restore your equipment’s durability, but if an item has broken completely, you’ll need to visit a Blacksmith for a solution.

Left or Right?

Dark Souls II was built with player freedom in mind. This game is not linear. If you find yourself struggling with a certain enemy or area, explore other paths. There is no “right way” to progress through the game. Each player will find his or her own path. If you truly get stuck, try exploring past areas — you may find that things have changed since you left.

Covenants

Dark Souls II has been designed to integrate a single and multiplayer experience. Covenants exist to allow players to role-play within Drangleic. Many NPCs throughout the game will offer membership with their respective Covenant. Whether you prefer a hardcore single-player experience, challenging other players to PvP battle, helping fellow comrades through tough areas, or defending against other players, there’s a Covenant for you. Special rewards wait for those who choose to champion their Covenants dutifully.

Weapons, Armor, Spells, Covenants, and Character Stats will let you play Dark Souls II however you choose. Countless character builds, boss strategies, and PvP tactics will blossom once the game launches next week. We look forward to seeing how you go beyond death.

The following comes from Ubisoft commercial manager Chris Marcus...

“It’s great to have a game as highly anticipated as Watch Dogs out this year and observe the number of licensed deals that have been agreed considering it’s a new IP. Over time we have developed strong relationships with some key licensing partners who have shared the vision we possess with some of our brands. Ensuring we are represented in categories like collectibles, apparel and print have provided a solid foundation to extend into other areas and assess how wide the interest to purchase game merchandise can be.

We have experienced great results with the Assassin’s Creed brand and it has reflected the work of many talented teams from creation through to customer experience. This framework opens the door for us to create quality merchandise that can be enjoyed at various levels of interest.”

If you're wondering, Watch_Dogs books, t-shirts, scarves, caps and hoodies are available for purchase.

Coming from a PureNintendo interview with Jools Watsham...

I have heard a number of different people say that they think the price of a game is irrelevant to the review, and some have said the fact that prices can fluctuate with sales promotions is the reason they do not want to consider the price in the review. If all games were priced equally, as music and movies typically are, we couldn’t have an issue. But, the fact is that games can vary from $1 to $60 (not counting Free to Play), and provide very different experiences. How can they be judged equally? I think price should be factored into reviews. It is a very important aspect of the product. The price should be an indication of the content expected.

Conception II Demo

Yes, that's right! Conception II is getting a demo on both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita, and it's coming on March 25. The demo will be a taste of the game, and will let players carry over their saves from the demo to the full version.

In addition to the sample of Conception II's unique brand of dungeon crawling, players who successfully complete the demo will earn a set of bonus goodies to help them out in the game.

Now what was that about giant battling death robots?

Giant Battling Death Robots

Let me present a nightmare scenario for you: you've fought your way through all the floors of an intense dungeon and are finally at the boss. All the potions you thought you'd never use are now gone, your mana is empty and the debuffs and status effects keep getting reapplied every turn you try and take them off. Hope seems non-existent...until you remember your army of Star Children can "Mecunite" and form a deadly robot that's an elemental powerhouse!

To make these robots in combat costs the hero's Bonding Points, so it should be used sparsely. It combines one whole team of children into a single unit, which takes on the primary element of that team. Meaning you should make sure the boss monster you're up against is weak to that element.

Mecunite units have a mega-devastating single target attack, an AOE attack and a heal that heals allies for 100% of health, so it's something that can easily turn the tide of battle. And since it gets its own HP/MP, you can wait until you have a team of Star Children at critical health (but that can be a dangerous line to play...)

They come with huge stat boosts too, so not only will you they dish out tons of damage, but their high speed stat gets them a lot of turns. As you might have guessed, it can quickly turn the tide of battle.

Tecmo Koei announced that a new character will join Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate's playable lineup later this month on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Marie Rose, previously seen in the Japan-exclusive Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade, will be released as add-on DLC for the console version of Ultimate. At just under five feet in height, Marie is the shortest fighter in the game, giving her an edge over beefier opponents like Bass and Bayman. A new patch for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate will accompany Marie Rose's debut, adding the free Lorelei Stage as a playable arena.

The Marie Rose character pack will be available for $5.99 when it hits the PlayStation Network on March 25 and Xbox Live on March 26. Additional costumes are priced at $1.99 each.

Two years ago, a bonus mission in Sniper Elite V2 lets players intercept a Berlin-bound train and put a bullet in Hitler's head, deviating from the real world event where the Third Reich leader killed himself in an underground bunker. Apparently, that headshot from Sniper Elite V2 didn't take. When Sniper Elite 3 comes out on July 1, you'll get the chance to kill Hitler ahead of schedule all over again.Read more...
