It's not just the handhelds that are going peach and pink: A new Princess Peach Wii Remote Plus is floating onto retail shelves in North America next week. You can acquire the peachy Motion Plus controller starting April 24, at the suggested retail price of $40. To bask in its full regal splendor, take a peek below the break.

It's a shame the Peach controller didn't make it out in time for Super Mario 3D World, or with a Toad one that Nintendo's not yet dreamed up. Playing that game with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad controllers is bordering on the problematically geeky, but we'd so do it. [Images: Nintendo]

Amazon just revealed its $99 Fire TV game and video streaming device today, and unveiled a $40 Bluetooth game pad to go along with it. As it turns out, developers appear to have the option to make their Amazon Fire TV games compatible with other controllers.

"I don't have the full data set, if any is the right term. Generally speaking, it's a Bluetooth controller," Mike Frazzini, VP of Amazon Games told Engadget today when asked about the Fire TV's controller support. "And the same thing vice-versa. Third-party controllers can work on Fire TV as well."

According to a mandatory configuration file for all Amazon Fire TV game developers listed on Amazon's site, developers must note if the app "supports a game controller, either the Amazon Fire game controller or a Bluetooth game controller from another manufacturer." While Amazon doesn't confirm official Fire TV support with the game pads, other Bluetooth controllers like Nintendo's Wii Remote and Sony's DualShock 4 could feasibly work with some games if developers so choose.

Likewise, while the Amazon Fire TV supports up to seven Bluetooth game controllers simultaneously, software development kit documentation notes that "only four of those controllers are assigned to player numbers." This seemingly caps local multiplayer gaming on Amazon Fire TV at four players at a given moment, which may not be an issue since gaming is more or less a "bonus" for the streaming device.
>>

Looks like Amazon has already taken down the page that explains how to define the controllers.json Controller Configuration File. Not sure what it's means, but I can't find info on it anywhere else on the Internet. The app submission section claims the file is needed. Do you still have the page, the first URL you list, cached?

>>

I thought so to, but the samples with the sdk add-on do not come with controllers.json. Maybe amazon has decided the file isn't needed. Supporting any  an all blutooth controllers is the best way anyways. I'm wondering what the original web page said.

Titanfall's anti-cheating system, FairFight, is now active on PC, and it places all cheaters in the same pool to play with each other - and only each other.

As Respawn puts it, "You can play with other banned players in something that will resemble the Wimbledon of aimbot contests. Hopefully the aimbot cheat you paid for really is the best, or these all-cheater matches could be frustrating for you. Good luck."

If you're not banned and invite a banned friend into your party, you'll all end up playing in the all-cheater pool. Respawn promises that playing with cheaters won't raise your risk of getting banned. Only cheating can do that.

If you think you've been unfairly banned, Respawn says to hit up anticheat@respawn.com.

The BBC has released a free online version of Infocom's classic PC text adventure The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the game's initial release.

Designed by "Hitchhiker's Guide" author Douglas Adams, Infocom's game mixes humor, sci-fi, and frequent player death for an experience many regard as a high point in the text adventure genre. The BBC's latest adaptation follows up on a previous 20th anniversary re-release, and boasts improved in-game navigation along with a virtual keyboard suited for touch screens.

If you plan to play through this one, remember to save frequently. That bulldozer is a killer.

Among our Best of the Rest picks for 2012 was a small, free Flash-based game called Frog Fractions. Now, the game's sequel is seeking $60,000 on Kickstarter to bring more unexpected fun to players.

Developed by Jim Crawford (under the guise of the developer name Twinbeard), the first Frog Fractions operated under the premise of being a piece of "edutainment," as players expected to learn about fractions while catching flies as a frog. As the game unwound, the adventure became strange and fractions became an afterthought.

Crawford's pitch for Frog Fractions 2 carries on with the same charade, even noting that "most Kickstarters are very detailed about what you're paying for, but the nature of this one is that you're paying for a surprise." Crawford said he created Frog Fractions "explicitly to evoke the air of mystery that all video games held in the 1980s," and that "Frog Fractions 2 will evoke that same feeling even more strongly." Crawford also noted that the game's final name will not be Frog Fractions 2, and it will be "larger in scope than Frog Fractions, containing multiple levels of secrets that will take you many play sessions to discover."

"I can't describe what I'm going to make in detail, but I can tell you that I've been thinking about how to properly follow up Frog Fractions for the past year, and I believe I can make something genuinely awesome," he said. The crowdfunding campaign for Frog Fractions 2 (working title) will end on April 9. The game is planned for PC, with Mac and Linux ports to follow. [Image: Twinbeard]

Online play for Gran Turismo 5 is set to expire in May, but the company has announced it's pulling the plug on the game's DLC early. On April 30, all Gran Turismo 5 DLC will vanish from the PlayStation Store.

In order to access Gran Turismo 5's "Racing Car Pack" and "Course Pack" after April 30, PS3 users will need to download and install a free supplemental piece of DLC called "Family Upgrade." Sony points out that, after online services have been terminated, some DLC can be re-downloaded through PSN even if local game data is erased from the hard drive - but not all of it.

Sony also announced Gran Turismo TV is shutting down on March 14. Gran Turismo TV is a video-on-demand service where users can access a variety of car-focused content, including pay-per-view videos. [Image: Sony]

There's a very tempting collection on sale over at Humble Bundle right now. Humble Indie Bundle 11 tosses together four indie treasures: Guacamelee, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and The Swapper. Pay more than the average and you'll also get Antichamber and Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine.

Guacamelee is Drinkbox Studios' lucha libre-inspired action platformer, while Dust: An Elysian Tail is Dean Dodrill's beautifully-animated action role-playing game. Giana Sisters, from Black Forest Games, is a difficult 2D platformer, The Swapper is a lauded puzzle game built around a cloning device, Antichamber is a psychological first-person exploration game and Monaco is all about pulling off heists with up to three other buddies.

This bundle will be live for the next two weeks, and the Humble Bundle folks assure us new games will be added before the sale period ends. In order to secure those additional games, you'll need to pay beyond the average - which is hovering around $4 as of right now. [Image: Drinkbox Studios]

Nintendo has obtained the entire patent portfolio of exergaming company InterAction Laboratories (a.k.a. IA Labs) following an unsuccessful 2010 lawsuit alleging that Nintendo's Wii and its peripherals infringed on IA's patents.

A trial court ruled in favor of Nintendo in 2012, ordering IA Labs to pay Nintendo's legal defense fees as a result. IA Labs lost a subsequent appeal last year, leading to a sheriff's sale of its assets when the company was unable to reimburse Nintendo's court costs. Nintendo then purchased IA Labs' remaining assets and patent portfolio during the sale, closing off the potential for further claims and lawsuits.

While Nintendo won this particular patent battle, a federal judge recently ruled in favor of Tomita Technologies International in a lawsuit over Nintendo's patent-infringing use of its glasses-free 3D technology. Nintendo was ordered to pay a percentage of revenue earned from 3DS hardware sales to Tomita as a result of the suit.

The beta period for Steam Family Options, which includes games sharing, has come to a close. Now all Steam users can start sharing their Steam libraries and setting user permissions for their children's accounts.

Steam Family Options allows users to control access to content on Steam for their young ones, but more importantly it allows them to share their games with up to ten others. Each user can earn their own achievements and save their own progress, though only one user in the "family" can access that particular Steam library at once, with priority always being given to the owner.

Managing which games are in your Family Library is fairly straightforward: Boot up Steam, go into your library, right-click the game you want to share and then click "Add to / Remove from Family Games." You can manage your Family Options under the Settings tab.

There's a Steam Family Options group on Steam you can join if you're looking for more info or need to troubleshoot. In order to start using Steam Family Options, you'll need to update your Steam client. After that, feel free to start sharing all those games you snatched up in the Steam Holiday Sale.

At 9:30 on the first morning of CES in Las Vegas, Tuan Nguyen walked into the Engadget media trailer carrying two cardboard boxes, each large enough to hold an adult cat. He placed the boxes on a table in a back room and asked me for something to cut through the tape holding them closed. He eventually used his keys. Nguyen unloaded one package, pulling grey foam from the edges of a white rectangle with the Steam logo imprinted on its top, a console just smaller than an Xbox One.

Nguyen started talking about the box - iBuyPower's SBX, a Steam Machine slated to hit retail this year for $500. He told stories about designing the box as a console, working with Valve and how hard it was to keep the budget down. He said iBuyPower was planning to announce a second Steam Machine paired with Oculus Rift that night, but to be honest, the Oculus team was a little behind schedule and the VR headset wasn't ready for console integration. He probably said too much.

At 11 that morning, I had an appointment to see Digital Storm's Steam Machine, the Bolt 2, a Windows-SteamOS hybrid that started at $1,900. The meeting was in Trump Tower, in a room on the 48th floor. The Trump lobby shone gold and dripped fake diamonds from the ceiling, and the doors leading into Digital Storm's room were French - behind them, a trio of spokesmen welcomed me, leading us past a table of branded swag to the ottoman by the window that held the Bolt 2. That spot provided the best possible lighting for photos, Chief Brand Officer Harjit Chana said.

The Digital Storm team was friendly and hit their talking points well, describing the Bolt 2 as a high-end PC and its customers as high-end people. This wasn't a Steam Machine for a wide market - it had a specific, dedicated audience. They knew that, I knew I wasn't in that audience (or that tax bracket), and that was all right. It was an impressive piece of hardware.

Both of the scenarios that I encountered were valid, and each carried their own charm, but they were undeniably the efforts of two disparate companies with vastly different business senses, branded together under one name: Steam Machines. What I learned that day wasn't how Valve would change living room gaming forever - I learned that the term "Steam Machines" was straight-up nonsense.

Sleeping Dogs is going through the normal pains of a new sandbox franchise's first outing. The reviews are good, but not great. The tech works, but it's not as polished as others in the genre. It's hard to be top dog in the sandbox crime genre when your competition includes Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row.
  • IGN (85/100): "Sleeping Dogs did things that wowed me from the moment I started playing, and it never really stopped. A few finicky issues aside, Sleeping Dogs has proven itself worthy of joining the top class of open-world sandbox games revolutionized by the likes of Grand Theft Auto IV and currently topped by more recent additions like Saints Row: The Third. But don't be confused; Sleeping Dogs does some things better than even the cream of the crop, and its story will be what keeps you focused on playing."
  • Giant Bomb (4/5): "So perhaps Sleeping Dogs isn't one of those games you'll want to keep on playing long after you've seen its story's conclusion. But while you're engaged with that story, this is an effective open-world experience, filled with interesting characters, some exciting action, and enough unpredictability to keep you hooked. It might feel familiar, but that doesn't make it any less fun."
  • Game Informer (78/100): "Sleeping Dogs has enough entertainment value to justify Square Enix's decision to save it from cancellation, but it also displays a lack of polish that makes its troubled development evident. For fans of open world games, it comes at a good time. Gamers who purchased Saints Row: The Third most likely finished it months ago, and we still don't have a confirmed release window for Grand Theft Auto V. If you're looking to explore the criminal underbelly of a city and get in some trouble, you could do worse than Sleeping Dogs while you wait for Rockstar's top dog."
  • Eurogamer (70/100): "It's a sad irony that the gameplay format that offers the most freedom for the player is the one most likely to trap developers in a loop of repetitive, copycat design. They have the ability to conjure up large, populated, realistic worlds and traverse them in any number of ways, and yet still we end up getting the same old cops-and-robbers story."
>>

The high ratings given to GTA 5 and the relatively low ratings given to Sleeping Dogs by these websites...

...are exactly why I don't trust a single thing they say anymore.  Sleeping Dogs > GTA 5 easy.

Francis
eh, Sleeping Dogs didn't hold my attention for very long (I got it free from PS+). I appreciate the more realistic setting and combat, but I think open world games are being judged based on how variety they have... and GTA has the most toys in it's sandbox.

Starbound features procedurally-generated worlds in which players must gather supplies to take on quests. December tends to be a financially exhausting month, what with the cousins, co-workers, friends and pets filling up your "must gift" list. All that generosity can leave you left with nothing but warm feelings and an empty wallet, and let's be honest - warm feelings won't do much to stave off the soul-crushing boredom that hits around 4PM every Saturday. Members of PlayStation Plus need not fear, however, as the service is winding down 2013 with a fine selection of free games for PS3 and Vita.

If driving is your thang, snag "aggressive" racer Grid 2, which lets you wind back a few seconds of time should something disastrous happen on the track. If you like to drive, shoot things, and collect a lot of loot (with which you can also shoot things), there's Borderlands 2. If you've never given this one a try, do it, especially if you're in the mood for some superfun co-op.

If shooting things while experiencing a rip in the fabric of spacetime all hopped up on cold medicine is more your style, Dyad is the way to go. A bit of a hidden gem, Dyad is a trippy shooter in the spirit of Rez or Space Giraffe, and while the blend of color and music with fast-paced twitch shooting isn't for everyone, we're pretty sure it's a recruitment tool for Starfighters of some sort.

Vita owners get a pair of wheel-happy titles gratis in December: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Urban Trial Freestyle. It would be hard to blame you for shrugging off a kart racer, even a free one, but we said Sonic "might be the best racer of its kind to come along in years, and that's no exaggeration," so you may want to make a point of checking it out. The latter lets you take your customizable motorbike all over town, performing tricks like ollies, wallrides, and others that undoubtedly invalidate your insurance policy.

For those still on the fence about picking up a PlayStation Plus membership, it's on the cheap this Black Friday (today!), with various retailers marking it down to $29.99.

Indie developer Peter Sjöstrand has released a beta PC version of Mega Man 2.5D, a fan-made Mega Man series tribute that incorporates elements from the 8-bit games Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3.

The demo version presents a remade version of Shadow Man's stage from Mega Man 3, expanded with new challenges and designed with co-op play in mind. A single-player mode is not included -- as a two-player team, Mega Man and Proto Man must solve a number of co-op puzzles on their way to a climactic end-of-level battle.

The beta release marks the first playable version of Mega Man 2.5D, which was initially teased as a proof-of-concept video in 2009. Sjöstrand is currently polling fans to determine which classic level should be featured in the next update, with available options including Quick Man, Metal Man, Snake Man, Wood Man, Air Man, Gemini Man, Magnet Man, Wave Man, and Cut Man.

The Kickstarter project for Mutant Football League has concluded, and was unsuccessful in reaching its lofty $750,000 goal. The campaign reached $141,821 thanks to 1,105 backers, a healthy amount for many other crowdfunding projects, but not enough to bring the football game back to life like one of its zombie characters.

Based on the Sega Genesis-era series, Mutant Football League was slated to arrive on PC via Steam, Xbox 360, PS3, iOS and Android. The original game's creator and lead for the project Michael Mendheim wrote in an update on the Kickstarter page that the team "will regroup and figure out a plan (with all of [the backers]) to move things forward and try again." Responses from the developer's closing survey to help dictate the game's direction going forward showed that backers saw the PC version as the most important among the group, and that the game would be better off featuring the overhead, top-down view players are accustomed to.

The developer broke down the costs related to bringing Mutant League Football back on the project page, noting that the $750,000 budget would include $325,000 in full-time salaries, $75,000 in Kickstarter and Amazon fees and $70,000 in business expenses such as licensing fees.

Valve has revealed a new controller optimized for Steam and Steam Machines devices, concluding this week's string of announcements aimed at bridging the gap between PC gaming and the living room. The peripheral will support the full catalog of Steam games released to date.

Contrasting "traditional gamepads," Valve's peripheral uses two trackpads, rather than the dual-analog setup common to consoles. Balancing the lack of physical sticks, Valve's controller uses haptic feedback, "allowing precise control over frequency, amplitude, and direction of movement."

The controller additionally features a touch-enabled surface with a high-resolution screen. The screen can also be clicked as a button. When a player taps the touch screen, its display overlays on top of the game itself, eliminating the need to look down at the controller during gameplay. According to Valve, "The screen allows an infinite number of discrete actions to be made available to the player, without requiring an infinite number of physical buttons."

Valve's peripheral announcement follows up on the recent unveiling of SteamOS, a dedicated Linux-based operating system capable of streaming Windows and Mac games from Steam to a user's television. Valve later revealed that its Steam Machines hardware lineup would incorporate SteamOS, noting as part of its beta signup that pre-production units are bundled with a unique controller.

"We set out with a singular goal: bring the Steam experience, in its entirety, into the living-room," Valve explains. "We knew how to build the user interface, we knew how to build a machine, and even an operating system. But that still left input - our biggest missing link. We realized early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology - one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises. So we spent a year experimenting with new approaches to input and we now believe we've arrived at something worth sharing and testing with you."

A detailed look at Valve's controller is after the break below.

Mega Man mogul Keiji Inafune has launched a Kickstarter to fund the development of his latest game, The Mighty No. 9. The fundraising campaign seeks to raise $900,000 within the next 30 days. If successful, the game will launch for PC sometime in the spring of 2015 via "Steam and DRM-free digital distribution methods." Mac/Linux versions will be produced if the $1.35 million stretch goal is reached. Likewise, Xbox 360, Wii U and PlayStation 3 versions will be developed if the campaign manages to raise $2.5 million.

The game's development team includes Mega Man series alumnus Nayoa Tomita and Manami Matsumae, who served as level designer and composer (respectively) on the original Mega Man, in addition to artist Shinsuke Komaki, whose resume includes character/mecha design work on Mega Man Legends. Mega Man 9/Mega Man 10 developer Inti Creates is also involved, with CEO Takuya Aizu listed as being responsible for "executing on the designs his company and Comcept create together for Mighty No. 9."

The game is a side-scrolling shooter, which concerns a robot named Beck - the ninth in a series of robots called the "Mighty Numbers." The other eight Mighty Numbers have gone rogue due to a virus, and it's up to Beck (and his female robot companion Call) to stop them. Each defeated Mighty Number grants Beck a new power, but Beck also has the ability to transform his limbs into various tools (giant magnets, tank treads, etc) to dispose of enemies and traverse the environment. You know, call us crazy but this sounds kinda familiar.

DuckTales Remastered is currently available for download on PS3, Steam and Wii U; the Xbox 360 version arrives on September 11.

The Electronic Arts-sponsored Humble Origin Bundle has earned over $8.6 million in charity donations since its launch earlier this month, breaking previous sales records and emerging as the biggest-selling Humble Bundle offering to date.

The record surpasses last year's Humble Indie Bundle V, which took in $5.1 million over the course of its two-week campaign. The Humble Origin Bundle collects EA's Dead Space, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space 3, Medal of Honor, Battlefield 3 and The Sims 3 in a pay-what-you-want package. Buyers have the option of dividing their purchase price between several featured charities.

The collection recently added Bullfrog's 1989 strategy game Populous and 2009's RTS Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising to its lineup of "beat the average" purchase incentives. The Humble Origin Bundle will remain available through next Wednesday.

Capcom unveiled the latest evolution of Street Fighter 4 at yesterday's EVO 2013 event, confirming previously reported details. Ultra Street Fighter 4 introduces five new characters - the returning quartet of Elena, Rolento, Hugo, and Poison, and a mystery fifth - as well as new modes, stages, features, and lots of feedback-guided gameplay tweaks.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 will be available early next year on Xbox 360 and PS3 as a DLC update for either Super Street Fighter 4 or SSF4: Arcade Edition, and as a standalone retail game. The DLC dragon-punches in at $15, while the full game spins birds at $40.

Update:

Well, fighting game tournaments are all about swift reversals. Nintendo has sent word that the Super Smash Bros. Melee stream will be allowed to proceed as organizers intended.

Original story:

Super Smash Bros. Melee
will no longer be part of EVO 2K13's streaming schedule, as per Nintendo's request. Shoryuken reports that Melee will be replaced by a mixture of Persona 4 Arena and King of Fighters XIII.

Adding an extra level of pain to the entire situation is the nearly $100,000 the Melee community raised for breast cancer research, in the hopes that Melee would be a featured game during the EVO 2K13 streams.

Nintendo recently started cracking down on broadcasters posting footage of its games online. In May, Nintendo hit "Let's Play" videos on YouTube - essentially narrated game walkthroughs - with mass revenue claims.

EVO 2K13 is this year's installment in the prominent EVO championship series of fighting game tournaments. EVO 2K13 will take place the weekend of July 12 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
