Holographic storage is a technology that we totally don't understand well enough to explain. Apparently, it's a method of storing data in which data is stored throughout the whole volume of a medium, rather than just the surface, allowing for more storage space on a disc. Basically, storage media with multiple-terabyte capacity.

Nintendo's name has shown up as a joint applicant on a patent application by InPhase Technologies for a scanner to read such holographic discs. Is Nintendo planning to solve the hard-drive issue with massive overkill, or are they planning to introduce a new format for their next system's games -- with massive overkill? Maybe nothing will come of this. Or maybe nothing will come of this for a long time.

Patent is here: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=7336409.PN.&OS=PN/7336409&RS=PN/7336409

If this works Nintendo while be able to anhilate on their next system. Multiple TBs in a system. That's just...wow. So either Nintendo has more sales or they're getting payed by Microsoft and Sony. All I hope is this comes out before the other thing I was reading about. Apparently some scientists are working on something using magnetism that could store 100 TBs or something like that.

Memory using magnetism is old. real old. Maybe there's some secret thing we can uncover, but storing information with magnetism isn't new.

This could give Nintendo a massive boost. They could put compile every Zelda game into a single Wii disk!

Jesus Christ.

I know EXACTLY what this could mean:

Longer, harder Nintendo games.

I seriously hope this works out, 'cuz I want more challenge in my Nintendo games. :<

Maybe this might mean a Wiimake of the Wind Waker, with a new dungeon that would take place inside an expanded version of the Cavern on Outset, or Inside Jabun's Belly!

or bonus content. Lots, and lots, of bonus content.

I'm more interested in it's potential as, y'know, a HARD DRIVE.

My GAWD. If this happens, every person who has ever associated with Nintendo, including players, will be in absolute heaven. Multiple terabytes on a single disc...

*Imagines an RPG that's 1000 hours long, not including sidequests and postgame*

*crag* yes.
