Well, think of it like this: Nintendo has it's hands full already. In fact, they are too full with their very wide age target. You've surely heard that many on Nintendo's "big games" have been...underwhelming for the loyal fanbase. Just imagine how much Nintendo would have to deal with to adjust to the swarm of JRPG/FPS-junkies, media content lovers, and major online gamers. It would make their franchises even more ignored, probably.

Now, on the other hand, if Microsoft and Sony did drop out, and gave their full support to Nintendo in their next console, then we'll all no doubt shit bricks from the levels of awesomeness. Look up "impossible" in the dictionary to see the odds of it happening, though.
