Or maybe "tokens" given out at the end of a battle to the winner(more to the winning team, and less to the losing one). And there'll be a store that allows you to trade in these tokens for trophies. Of course, if we do so, to prevent over-abuse, the same people can't fight each other more than a few times a day. |

To combine that with my idea of limiting how much a player can grow a day, you could only receive tokens from so many battles every day; say, 3. If you fight 3 and win all of them, you'd get more than if you lost all of them, and that'd be it for that day. |
