I didn't really see that as a claimed gender, but rather a personification.
The only time I have ever seen Pokémon creators give Legendaries an intended gender(sans Cresselia, Heatran, Latios & Latias), is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2. If you want to base gender specifications from there then, yes, Darkrai is male.
BTW, I think it's great, better than I can do.
