Now that you think about it, don't you think it's quite easy to get 1-ups? I mean, come on, look at it:
50 Starbits
5 1-ups possible everytime you go into the observatory
Mailtoad(Gives Mario 5, Gives Luigi 20)
Various 1-ups scattered around the game
I mean, right now, I have like, 50 1-ups. Don't you think there are a lot of 1-ups in the game?

Ehee hee hee! I think it was to balance out the incredible difficulty in the latter levels, or maybe to make it easier for younger players.... |

Yeah. Some galaxies are stupid-hard, like Bubble Blast, Bowser's Galaxy Reactor, and (my first use of the lb tag) Luigi's Purple Coins!!!
Incorrections:
@YagamiMirror, 1st post: You can actually get five 1-Ups each time you go to the Observatory: At the top, under the Gate, below the Library, under the Kitchen, and in a crate at the Garage.
@Sind: Actually, with Luigi, the only time the Mailtoad gives you a 20-up is when you come into the game from the file-select screen. The next time he offers them, it's only five. |
