Communists were often referred to as "reds" in the United States. A fear of communism in the 20s led to an event known as the Red Scare... >_>

Nope. Mario uses separately owned currency in the New Super Mario Bros. and the Mario RPG games, meaning he is a capitalist.

His attire doesn't fit Socialism or Communism either, for Mario's attire is not just red, but white and blue as well. That means his clothes are more reflective of the United States than the other.
