Emo And Goth are derived from the same ancestor(punk), However have evolved as sub species in culture.

Emocore, a genre of music, is separate from goth music(the wide variety of), routes in alternative rock, Bands Such as Fall out Boy, Dashboard Confessional and My Chemical romance are oft classified as Emo, the musicians in question of these bands are often a prime example of the Emo fashion culture, at least that perceived by most of society.

the wrist cutting stereotype does exist, People slit there wrists not to kill them selfs, but because Blood letting stimulates Endorphins, A sort of natural pain killer of the body, creating a false high. It can get addicting. Id Wager that those who do cut them selfs have some level of depression.

The "fake" emo's you speak of are Lemmings, Every sub culture has them, its inevitable.

Emo And Goth May share some similar traits, but they are quite diffrent.

Not your perception, or their self perception, but society's perception because both are merely labels.

In fact, Most Emo's Don't even "Identify" as Emo, because they find it insulting.

From my experiences... most people who identify themselves as "emo" (as in emotional) are attention whores. The people with actual psychological problems and suicidal ideation usually hate emos, because the emos' attention whoring belittles their actual problems.
