Continuing with what darkzero said, you're taking spam too seriously. The stuff in OT isn't exactly spam anyway. We're just joking and not being serious, that's what off-topic is for. Besides, without the joking around, Digibutter gets boring.

Now you're just making stuff up. We don't need spam. All we need is non-serious-ness. Which we have plenty of.

@Yagami: It's flooding. Flooding is can either be considered a form of spam, or something seperate and slightly worse, since you have 9 semi-spam threads instead of one really bad one.

'K. Then flooding is a form of spam. Flooding is all over Off-Topic. Therefore, Off-Topic has lots of spam.

Because it's damn annoying, because it topples good threads, and because it wastes our precious and not-so-long time.

Now, once again and in case you didn't get the point straight yet: OT isn't a clone of The Dump dammit. Franis clearly said you can't just post whatever you want there. And I wonder how come this didn't get punches into some people's minds yet.

Do you want a place to post your random shit? Fine. Go post your random shit in /b/, you can even leave Digi for we don't need spammers.

No. Here's why these are bad ideas:

1) You get rid of Off-Topic. We all know, I'm not exaggerating when I say Off-Topic generates at least a quarter of the site's traffic. Without off-topic, no one will have a place to vent without suffering the consequences. They follow the fads and general randomness of Off-Topic, which helps them relieve stress. If we got rid of Off-Topic, a LOT of people would leave, and the site would be more boring. There would be no place for venting, no place for "it sank", the site would just become more boring.

2) Add rules to Off-Topic. Now, we all know what would happen here. If someone adds rules to Off-Topic, people get angry, then they REALLY start spamming. Then, everyone gets jailed at the hands of the mods. With all the "cool people" in jail, everyone will start to leave, because their posts in Off-Topic have been limited to being serious, and the awesome people are in jail.

3) Make Off-Topic "Light Discussion". No. Off-Topic was never meant to be serious. It was a place where we could post anything, as long as it wasn't totally rule-breaking. If we make it Light Discussion, then it would just be another General Discussion. Case and point; if someone has something serious to say, POST IT IN GENERAL DISCUSSION. If it's just a casual, pointless message or fad, POST IT IN OFF-TOPIC. That's not so hard to do, is it? Just stop making serious topics in Off-Topic.

I completely agree. Nuking Off-Topic would make the site a lot more boring and less active. General Discussion is way too formal.

If they go on spamming rages when they're angry, they shouldn't be on the site at all. Spam is still completely against the rules, and anybody who spams needs to learn their lesson. And nobody would actually leave Digibutter because Frozenwinters or MALAK got jailed or something. They'd spam and get punished, and might hate the main mod behind it afterward, but they wouldn't leave. One or two users might get over-emtional and leave for 3 days, but that's it. How many times has a user actually left because of another user being jailed? They threaten to leave, but they almost never do.

Actually, there are (sadly,) some members who consider some other members better than life, and would go completely emo if something happened to them.

They wouldn't leave Digibutter forever though. MALAK, Frozenwinters, Maya Fey, Fireice, and others have been jailed and almost nobody has left so far. They threaten to leave, and they might leave for 3 days or so, but they almost never leave Digibutter for months/forever. Possibly because they know the member they obssess about is going to get unjailed eventually and start posting again.
