As I picked up the Pure Heart, I turned to face Shadow.

"I did try to put the flames out, but it seems that not even an ocean could put them out... Someone should check this out..."

I was afraid the fire would be dangerous to one like me, being the embodiment of ice... I really didn't want to be the embodiment of steam.

"If only I had all seven Chaos Emeralds at hand..." Shadow closed his eyes and tapped his foot impatiently.

"... I can utilize Chaos Control without any of the Emeralds, but my power is very limited when doing so; it would not be enough to stop this kind of inferno. The Chaos Emeralds are currently being kept in the long-abandoned Death Egg, which the villain Eggman once used as his base of operations. The security is high, but since Sonic and his friends designed it, they could help us get through to the Emeralds - of that I am positive. I just need to find them..."

"Hmph... how ironic," mused Shadow. "The very power that Dimentio wishes to destroy will be used to save this world from destruction."

Opening his eyes again, Shadow turned away from Articuno. "... And unless you want to help me save Mobius, you'd do well to stay out of my way. Understand?"

And with those warm words of parting, Shadow sped off towards a distant village.

I was more than willing to save a once-beautiful world from destruction. I flew off at top speed to try to meet up with the hedgehog.

Raviel Village

"Sonic! We have to evacuate the rest of the fuzzies, quickly!"

Sonic turned and looked at Amy, waving a hand reassuringly. "Hey! Calm down. We'll get them to safety... all of them! I promise. Whoah!" He keeled back suddenly, as Shadow came dashing into the village, screeching to a halt right in front of him so abruptly that a small gust of wind had blown forward, knocking him slightly off balance. "Shadow! What are you..."

"There's no time, Sonic!" interrupted Shadow with evident impatience. "You and I both know that the only way to stop this is to retrieve the seven Chaos Emeralds. We need to go and get them... NOW!"

Sonic glanced back at Amy again. She nodded and said, "Don't worry, Sonic. Cream, Cheese, and I will take care of evacuating the others."

Shadow's eyes had darted between the both of them as Amy spoke. "But where are Tails and Knuckles?" he asked, unable once again to hide the bite of impatience in his voice.

Sonic shook his head and said, "Gone... far from here, in the Magorin Temple... training, as always."

Just then, they both noticed Articuno sweep into the village.

"Who... what... Shadow, would you care to actually take some time and EXPLAIN what's going on here?!" Sonic said, looking at the two confusedly.

Shadow sighed. "Alright, fine. This freak in a mask cast some sort of spell - that's why all of Mobius is starting to go up in flames, now. This... magician... seems to be set on destroying Mobius, and the Chaos Emeralds along with it."

"What?!" Sonic's eyes widened. "But why...?"

"No idea," said Shadow hurriedly. "But if we have any hope at all of saving Mobius from destruction, then it definitely lies in retrieving those emeralds."

Sonic scratched his head. "But who's this with you?'

"Ah," said Shadow. "Yes, well. This one comes from another dimension as well, but he is here to help us."

"Say no more," said Sonic quickly. "Sorry to waste time, but I had to know before we actually get started. Let's go!" And he sped off in a seemingly random direction.

"Don't worry, he knows exactly where he's going... we can follow him right to the Death Egg. It crashed into Mobius some time ago, see, so we can access it from the ground."

"Ready?" he said, glancing over at Articuno. He bent his knees, and without waiting for an answer, sprinted off into the distance, in the same direction as Sonic had gone.

I'm always ready to save someone or something... I have a feeling that the Emeralds could restore power to the Pure Hearts...

Although I did not know much of this dimension, Palkia, a Pokemon who traveled through the gaps between dimensions, had told many of the objects of power. Especially the Chaos Emeralds, jewls with the power to create or destroy...

I flew off at top speed yet again to catch up with the speedy animals.

After only a few minutes, both Shadow and Sonic had found themselves at the bottom of a large, dusty valley. Sitting there, in the dead center, was the massive Death Egg, half of it submerged beneath the sandy wasteland. The entrance, a large, shadowy archway, was luckily still visible, just above the ground, as though waiting expectantly for them to enter.

"This is it..." said Sonic, coming to a halt. Just behind him, Shadow stopped too. "The Death Egg."

"Well then, stop wasting time looking at the thing and go in! Are you a hero, or a tourist?!" Shadow sighed angrily and sped past Sonic, disappearing into the metal ruin's depths.

"... Thanks for the pep talk, Shadow." replied Sonic quietly, rolling his eyes. He waited for Articuno to catch up.

"Whoa... So this is where the Emeralds are..."

I was left almost speechless by the sight of the huge chunk of metal known as the Death Egg. I only needed a glance of Sonic's eyes to know he wanted me to follow him.

"Yep... it took Dr. Gerald Robotnik years to build and perfect this massive base for his evil operations... and in the end, we destroyed it!"

Sonic laughed, and walked forward into the dark ruins.

"Guess we can't keep Shadow waiting," he said. "Don't want to give him a heart attack, do we?"

Shadow was actually waiting for them, however. "It's not me that shouldn't be kept waiting... it's Mobius. Every second, that fire spreads, and more innocent lives become endangered. Now get your head in the game, Sonic, or lives WILL be lost!"

Sonic shook his head. "Hey man, I'm taking this just as seriously as you. Just relax... a key part of success here is keeping calm."

"Hmph." Shadow turned away. "I'll be sure to keep that in mind, then. Just tell us how to get through this security," he said, indicating a mass of tiles that littered the ground just ahead.

"Oh yeah! The entrance hall is booby-trapped with this multicolored tile flooring. You just need to step on only the red panels, see?"

Sonic stepped forward calmly onto a red panel, just in front of him. It was rather small, but he managed to keep his balance. Turning back, he looked at Shadow and Articuno (how ironic) and gave them a thumbs-up.

"Just be careful!" he said, hopping diagonally to the next red tile.

"Well, seems easy enough," commented Shadow, as he, too, stepped forward onto one of the red panels that littered the checkered, colorful floor. "Good thing one of us can fly."

"Meh, floor tiles. Been there, done that."

I flew across the floor easily. No problems here.

In no time at all, the three of them had easily cleared the first obstacle, if you could call it that.

"Is that it, then? Come on, let's go," murmured Shadow, dashing into the next chamber. Sonic followed along with Articuno.

The next room was full to the brim with green lasers, all of which were pointing in various odd angles across the room. The entire pathway across, up, down, left and right, was a shimmering tangle of green light.

"Sheesh, Sonic... how many more of these cliché security devices do we have to deal with?!" Shadow tapped his foot impatiently. "Surely there's an easy way out of this?"

"Eh... heh heh, I'm afraid not," said Sonic, rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah, see... we didn't think we'd need to retrieve the emeralds again..."

Shadow shook his head. "Are you an idiot?! Wait, don't answer that. Just go!"

Sonic sighed, but stepped forward, looking determined. The lasers really were quite random, streaming across the room horizontally, vertically, and diagonally in almost every way imaginable.

"Just keep calm, as always..." Sonic muttered quietly to himself, taking a tentative step forward into the bright, green maze. Ducking low, he slipped through another gap in the lasers, the quills on his head just barely missing a single green beam overhead.

Shadow watched Sonic make his slow progress across the room. "Well, this room is too vast for me to just teleport across... I guess I'll have to do this the hard way." He sighed as well, but clambered forward into the mess of lasers nonetheless.

"YAH!" Sonic shouted, and almost leapt into the air, but he contained himself just in time, though he was still shaking slightly.

"What, what is it?!" said Shadow quickly, looking over at Sonic.

"Eh... nothing," Sonic called back. "I thought for a moment that I had set one of these things off. You don't want to find out what happens if any of us do, trust me."

This could be tough, I thought to myself. I then realised I had something that could help me in this dire situation... No, wouldn't a miroor just reflect it into the others?

"I'll try to get past this..."

OOC: I'll roll a 6-sided die here, if it's even, I make it, if it's odd, I set off the trap.

I had tried my best here, but the lasers were too random. I had almost made it, but the tip of my wing had touched the last laser.

"Well, that works..." said Shadow, avoiding the beams and continuing to snake steadily forward through the maze. "Wait... what?!" He exclaimed, noticing the beam make contact with Articuno.

Sonic was just a little farther ahead. At one point, he had to actually jump and do a complicated sort of wiggling roll to make it through the next series of laser beams.

"Why in Mobius... didn't I install... a security switch...?!" Sonic cried exasperatedly, stumbling through another opening among all the green.

"SONIC!!! The alarm...!" Shadow called across the room, his voice echoing through the massive chamber. Sonic turned back.

"Wha...?!" There was a blaring screech, and the heavy steel doors at both ends of the room started to lower themselves automatically.

"We'll be shut inside if we don't hurry up!" shouted Shadow.

"Oh no... What's happening this time?"

I was about ready to freeze the doors open...

Sonic continued to inch forward through the maze of lasers. "We've got to get there... quickly..."

"Sonic, what are you doing?!" said Shadow, looking annoyed. He was standing normally now, the beams going right through him.

"We've already triggered the alarm - just run!"

Both hedgehogs zoomed forward towards the door at top speed, ignoring the lasers now. The door was almost completely shut...

"Hey Articuno, buddy! Think you can lend us a wing?" called Sonic, still pelting towards the door, Shadow hot on his heels.
