Relic Turning Retribution's Last Stand Mode Into A Standalone Game
If I were the God Emperor, I’d be smiling at Relic. The (mostly) real-time-strategy development studio announced plans yesterday to release a cheaper, standalone experience based on Dawn Of War II - Retribution's “Horde” mode, The Last Stand. Called The Last Standalone, it's now available on Steam.

The goal is to introduce new players to the core game, Retribution, via this cheaper, tighter and less complex experience.

“We saw this as a unique opportunity to introduce new players to the Dawn of War franchise as well as expanding the player base for the already popular Last Stand mode,” producer Jeff Lydell said in the announcement press release.

This should appeal to deal hounds, too: the game has debuted at $9.99. Obviously, it won't require a Retribution install, but if you do have Retribution, it’s safe to skip this. The Last Standalone is ripped straight from Retribution. If you don’t have Retribution and want to buy The Last Standalone, you’ll be able to “upgrade” the game to Retribution at a “reduced price.”

One of the questions I have, however, is whether The Last Standalone will receive updates or content that Retribution won’t--or vice versa. I have a feeling that Relic won’t be giving players the shaft, but I've sent an email to publisher THQ just to be sure.
