I don't personally know any Christians that have ever said that.
Events & conferences do this all the time to drive attendance, I don't see why a church can't try it out too. But yeah, it does look desperate.

It's ignorant to lump all of Christianity under your stereotypes. It's like making a racist statement and then saying "it's not specific black people, it's just blacks in general". It may be true for some, but not all, and probably not even the majority.
