Personally, I think it's a step back. Stone tablets were so much more reliable, even water and fire-proof!

waterproof generally means it won't soak up water so easily and become a soggy mess, it'll retain it's shape and hardness.
you're probably thinking of erosion, which takes a really long time to have noticeable effects.
