Running a new DnD campaign

Decided to run 3.5 since I have all the books and it has more content and shit. We can change to 4e if enough people want, but I figure most of you don't care enough.

In general terms 3.5e = more content

4e = better combat

Honestly I think you guys would enjoy 4e more as players, so if you want me to switch to it I'm okay with that. Really my problems with 3.5's combat begin and end with melee classes. 3.5e Warriors and Barbarians kind of get the short stick as they're pretty much just hitting things with other things. 4e introduced skills very similar to a Wizard's spells for melee classes, and in general abilities are a lot easier to manage and it has a lot more of an FF Tactics vibe. It has its down sides, but overall I think it is a better system, especially for new players.

Just tell me soon so I can start porting things over. It won't be too difficult but I'd like to know which edition we are doing before I starting building anything in depth.

Also if you can't make time to play at least every other Friday or Saturday don't sign up, if you don't show up I will kill your character and replace him with a homonculous and I will not feel bad.

As far as characters go you can build pretty much whatever you want. I would say it is generic setting but that isn't entirely true as I'm pretty much just using the books to build my own lore. If you want to be a certain race just make the sheet and I will try to fit it in, if you can't find a applicable entry in it in the monster manual try to find at least a close approximation preferably with PC stats.

For instance a Mimic PC could concievably build off of an Animated Object or maybe even a Warforged with some changes.

So yeah, character sheets activate. Looking for at least 4 players, max 6. Might be able to do it with one more or less but we'll see how it goes.

I'm good for Saturdays, don't mind which edition we play

Starting level 3.
Almost 100% going to go 3.5e unless dire circumstances.
Sheets are necessary.

I wish I knew how to play DnD so I could play with you guys. Unless there's a quick 5 minute tutorial or something, because it seems like a pretty hefty game.

If you want I can give you a pre-made character.

In game it's just role playing, dice rolls, and checking rolls against your stats. Anything else can be explained as we go and isn't really that important.

I'm thinking about having a trial run, one day adventure of entirely pre-mades just to get everyone used to it who have never played or haven't played in awhile.

Yeah, that sounds simple.

I'm going to do a one night run of Tomb of Horrors.

It's a DnD module that has been around since 1e and is famous for it's lethality. It is unique in that it was really the first real adventure to emphasize role playing and problem solving over combat and as such I think it is a great way to introduce people to the mechanics of DnD The idea of playing it with premade characters is there are no consequences for failure.

Everyone will start with two characters they control, which I would probably want a group of about 4-5 people that being the case. Death is almost assured, but it being outside any real adventure means death has little to no effect on play and really is just a tool for learning and hilarity. This of course also means any loot in the tomb is essentially worthless, but then again part of the fun of finding treasure is just finding the *crag*ing treasure.

The Tomb of Horrors module I have was adapted to 3.5e so it follows the same mechanics we'll be using in the larger campaign. You don't have to promise to be in that to participate in the tomb run or anything, really I just want to run the tomb because it seems like it would be funny and it's really just an added bonus that we might get some people who might not have necessarily been keen on picking up DnD beforehand.

All you really need to do is be there. I'll get some premade characters ready and you'll just have to fill out the sheets in the client and play the game.

Alright, so we've got an FPer named Latin_Geek joining us
He's new to the game so he's gonna be learning ropes next session

I want to do Tomb on Saturday around 9 or 10 EST, that seems like the easiest time to get everyone together.
We're going to use Fantasy Grounds, so if you don't have it let me know.
Post so I know who is going to be able to come. I'd like to have at least 4 and no more than 5 but exceptions can be made.

Latin Geek here, 9 EST sounds good to me. Any idea how long it'll go for?

I do not have Fantasy Grounds. I don't have anything, as a matter of fact.

I also don't have Fantasy Grounds

Hello there Latin Geek. Based on my character, I guess I'm going to be this campaign's That Guy. Fun times, right?
About Fantasy Grounds: Pirate that shit. God speed.

Any version I should be looking for? I found a 2.6.3 download with enough seeders.

Reply by Santiago Aquino Apr 11 2012 11:15 GMT
That's the version Pops and I have. Do it.
