Blood Bowl Message Board

As far as I’m concerned, the important tasks for any new Blood Bowl 2 trailer to accomplish are as follows:

1) Show me which races will be available so that I don’t expect to be writing about an Ultimate Skaven Edition in three years time. 2) Attempt to convince me that the camera movement and turn-flow will be as smooth as a freshly shampooed dwarf beard. 3) Go some way toward showing that turn-based tactical trouncing is a bigger draw than ‘comic’ commentary.

Its crowds and players and logo-adorned ball too, but mostly grass. Thick, lustrous, individually-bladed grass, with shadows and everything. It’s like kicking a ball – and some heads – in a Crysis game. Whether these are screenshots or bullshots remains to be seen, but they’ve done the intended job of making me goo “ooh! It’s a good year to be a Blood Bowl fan. Well, unless you’re one of those folks who can’t abide developer Cyanide. (I think they try to do a lot of interesting, ambitious things, but often end up fluffing them). Not only is a sequel to the relatively faithful and quietly successful 2009 PC adaptation inbound, but there’s now also going to be Blood Bowl: Star Coach, which is to the Warhammer-themed sport of crunching heads what Football Manager is to the sport of foot-to-ball.

Cyanide are at the helm of that one too, and it’s going to be free to play.(more…)

I’ve always wanted to try Blood Bowl, mostly due to Kieron’s amazing diary of his Skaven team’s inaugural season, so you can imagine my delight when Jim asked me to review stand-alone expansion Dungeonbowl. At last! I was so happy I tucked my t-shirt over my face and performed the traditional foot-to-ball “Frivolous Dance”.

My flat’s a bit small for it, mind, and I ended up putting my foot in my dinner, but the point is I went into Dungeonbowl with an open mind. Also, a sock that smelled of beef. Both of which were probably unwise.(more…)

There’s a new Blood Bowl edition in the works, Chaos Edition, which updates the game with three new races and a new stadium. To expand the team roster there are, appropriately enough, Chaos Dwarves, Daemons of Khorne, and the handsome Underworld teams. The Khorne team will be able to field a Bloodthirster, which seems a bit like an unfair play to me, but then it is Blood Bowl The new stadium is in the heart of a jungle, and you can see it pictured here. Sadly Cyanide have neglected to mention how the compatibility between this new edition of the game and older editions will work, but as I understand it there’s a good deal of incompatibility between older editions, so…

It’s out in September.

Fresh from their reworking of fantasy tabletopper Confrontation, Cyanide have announced they are working on Dungeonbowl - a fantasy sports game – which is the version of Blood Bowl set inside a shoe dungeon. The screenshot above looks remarkably like a place I visited in Second Life, but we have assurances that the game is based firmly on the Games Workshop original. Quoth Cyanide: “Dungeonbowl continues Cyanide’s successful collaboration with Games Workshop and their rich and varied Blood Bowl world. The gameplay should therefore delight existing Blood Bowl fans as well as offer a gateway to this zany parody of Warhammer and American Football for fans of tactical sports gaming.”

Zany. There’s a word. Dungeonbowl will reportedly arrive in the middle of 2012.

A new knock-out league entitled the RPS Cup (the cup itself is strictly imaginary) is starting up, and you can find all the details and the sign-up Googledocs spreadsheet here. The organiser, Daave, is hoping for a whopping 64 competitors, so you can bet you’ll be welcome, and if you own the original Blood Bowl the Legendary Edition can now be found for a paltry £9. Kieron got involved in one of these tournaments two years ago and his diary still makes for great reading, so what are you waiting for? Go play!

For those who like their fantasy football league to be significantly more fantastical, Steam has reduced the price of Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition for the weekend. The usual $40 price has been sacked, knocking it down to $10. Blitz this deal quick -- it ends on Monday and there won't be overtime.

Registrations for the Blood Bowl World Cup 2011 are now open, although it’s frankly as clear as mud (churned beneath the boot of a team of dirty orcs) exactly how you do that. There are some details here and here, but there doesn’t seem to be an actual entry form, because there are no links where there should be links. Anyway, there will once again be thousands of dollars worth of prizes, and a big old real-world final in Cologne, Germany. So that might be worth (eventually) signing up for if you happened to be interested in Blood Bowl. Which, for some reason, I believe some of you might be.

One of the twelve new races to be introduced in Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition is the typically cerebral High Elves, pictured below. Sorry, but they shouldn't be any good at football. Not because they're so darn brainy, but because they're built like extremely tacklable stalks of wheat.

Blood Bowl, you'll remember, is the wacky little mash-up between fantasy and American football that's based on the Games Workshop turn-based board game, taking place in the Warhammer setting. And while it's been tearing up the field on consoles since last year, the game hasn't been available on the PC in the US yet. That'll change at the end of 2010, however, when Cyanide and Focus Home Interactive release the newly announced Legendary Edition for the PC.

The Legendary Edition will add 12 new races to the current eight, so Undead, Amazons, Ogres and others will all get to toss the boarskin around in new stadiums and tournaments. The game will also include a story mode in which players will assume the role of a freelance coach tasked with rising up through the ranks. Sounds like fun -- it's a shame that we have to wait another eight months for the PC version of a game that came out last year, but maybe Blood Bowl fans will find it worth the wait.
