Last week IGN brought you the full rundown of DC Universe Online's next update. It packs Bat-villain Ra's al Ghul, a new alert, a new Duo and a Swamp Thing/Poison Ivy event for the MMO. But words only do so much, and that's why we've got the video below that offers your first glimpse of Ra's in action. DC Universe Online is getting Game Update 3 in the very near future. It's currently in the approval process, so no firm dates are set. Every update focuses around one new character, and Game Update 3's is Ra's Al Ghul. The infamous ecoterrorist and Batman nemesis is striking out, and it's up to players to infiltrate his mountainside fortress and stop him. According to Game Director Mark Anderson, the goal of his quest line is to show more of Ra's Al Ghul's backstory and his inner workings...

Sony had some sort of little problem recently, I hear. Why, someone even claimed that, following a serious security compromise, all of their PlayStation online services had been offline for about six weeks, but they’ve got to have been jerking my chain. There’s no way a major technology firm could allow that to happen, surely. I mean, that would simply be absurd. Absurd.

Things are on the mend now, anyway. Sony Online Entertainment’s MMOs – including Everquest II, Free Realms, DC Universe Online and Star Wars: Galaxies (I wonder if SWTOR will be the final nail in that ever-troubled coffin?) – have ‘only’ been offline since May 3, but have today sputtered back to life alongside PSN.(more…)

At Sony Online Entertainment in Austin, Texas, John Blakely headed up projects ranging from Star Wars Galaxies to DC Universe Online. Now, Blakely is leading Zynga's Austin-based offices, acting as general manager for the studio in a move spotted this past week. Blakely's LinkedIn profile indicates he's been with Zynga Austin since some point in April of this year.

SOE confirmed Blakely's departure in a statement, thanking him for "the passion and leadership he brought to work every day," and noting that the company "fully supports him in his future endeavors." Zynga could not be reached for comment as of publishing, though it stands to reason that the social media giant isn't exactly unhappy with the acquisition. Executive director of development, Lorin Jameson, will fill Blakely's spot at SOE.

Despite initial assurances, Sony Online Entertainment eventually confirmed that yes, it did misplace some of your user data recently, and the company feels really, really sorry about that. It can't actually get the data back, of course (that's not how it works), but SOE says it will do its best to make it up to customers with free stuff, as announced on its blog today.

All SOE players will get 30 days of free game time in every game they're subscribed to, in addition to extra play time for every day the servers are down (they've been down since May 2 already). There are also plenty of rewards lined up per game, including special gear and items in DC Universe Online and Star Wars Galaxies plus some special Double XP events in Everquest and Vanguard.

Lifetime subscribers will get another load of in-game currency in addition to all of the other rewards, and Station Access subscribers will get an extra 500 Station Cash. And don't forget about Sony's plan to also offer affected users free identity protection for a year through Debix.

Sony Online Entertainment plans to give all DC Universe Online players a free month and "Batman-Inspired mask" as compensation for the current outage. The company asked players on the game's Facebook page to bear with them as "the complexities of the subscription server dictate how and when this will be available" and that the company will be releasing "more information this week."

The outage is part of the overall PlayStation Network issue that resulted in SOE announcing earlier this week that 12,700 credit card numbers were taken and 24.6 million accounts were compromised. So, yeah, a free month and a virtual hat seems like a good start to an apology.

In an effort to satiate subscribers that suddenly found themselves unable to play their favorite MMOs, and were, perhaps, a bit raw regarding the breach of customer information on its network, Sony Online Entertainment has announced a plan to offer some free services across its stable of MMO titles.

The publisher put out a press release last night that just about repeated the entirety of the last press release, save for a paragraph dedicated to how the publisher intends to start making things right for affected players.

SOE will grant customers 30 days of additional time on their subscriptions, in addition to compensating them one day for each day the system is down. It is also in the process of outlining a "make good" plan for its PlayStation3 MMOs (DC Universe Online and Free Realms). More information will be released this week.

In addition to the 30 free days across all titles, SOE announced via the game's Facebook page that DC Universe Online players all shall receive "Batman-inspired" masks for their trouble.

So, do you feel satiated yet?

First the PlayStation Network got hacked and shut down, and then, Sony Online Entertainment got hacked and shut down. These two things have guaranteed that DC Universe Online players have been unable to play the MMO as of late. That sucks, but the developers understand...

 "Ha ha. Wait, cards from 2007? Only ha, then." Sony's security woes continued yesterday when Sony Online Entertainment announced a security breach at the same facility that housed PlayStation Network's recently compromised database. 

The MMO developer said the personal information of 24.6 million accounts were exposed, in addition to 12,791 non-US credit or debit numbers with expiration dates--but not security codes. Data compromised included name, address, email address, birth date, gender, phone number, login name, and hashed password. 10,740 direct debit records from Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain were also accessed.

In mildly "positive" news, SOE has revealed this morning that most of those were actually expired cards. Only 900 of the nearly 13,000 exposed were active cards, meaning most consumers are not at risk. The database accessed was reportedly from 2007, explaining how so many of the cards have expired.

Like PSN, SOE does not believe its main database was or is at risk.

"There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised," reiterated the company in a statement. "It is in a completely separate and secure environment."

It's been quite a ride when that's considered positive news.

With PSN still down, PlayStation 3 users are still unable to access SOE titles like DC Universe Online.

Sony just can't catch a break. First spotted by MMORPG.com, it looks like DC Universe Online is undergoing drastic server mergers, with all servers -- across both PC and PS3 -- being condensed down into just four. According to an announcement on the DCUO forums which currently can't be seen due ...

Sony Online Entertainment confirmed today it is investigating an security breach into its network systems and that hackers may have stolen SOE customer information...

Sony Online Entertainment said today it has temporarily turned off its servers after the company "discovered an issue" while investigating an intrusion into its system. It's unclear at this time if this incident is related to last month's intrusion of PlayStation Network...

"Super-Servers" sure sounds like a euphemism for "server merge," a sign that the DC Universe Online community is in rapid decline, but SOE is putting a positive spin on its plan to address "concerns about queue times on the servers." The DCUO operator expects to begin testing "new technology to meld all of our US and European PC and PS3 servers into four Super-Servers" this month, according to a news post on the official game site.

The so-called Super-Servers would be divided into two per region, with the US and Europe each hosting a PC and PS3 server and continuing to segregate the platform communities. "This will allow for more opportunities to queue and participate in other group related game mechanics," SOE explained, without clarifying whether the move would actually reduce the number of servers or instead initiate cross-server queuing to cut down on wait times. The "melding" has also raised questions about how SOE would keep PvP and PvE players separated. "We'll have more details at a future date," said the company.

Though the PlayStation Network and Qriocity side of Sony's digital services may have been subject to a massive breach of user information, it seems that Sony Online Entertainment product users are safe. SOE reps took to Sony's forums to clear the air, saying, "We have been conducting a thorough investigation and, to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons."

The post also acknowledges a "continuing investigation" currently taking place at SOE, and notes that the company will "promptly notify" customers of any change in the situation. SOE's games -- including Free Realms and DC Universe Online -- temporarily went offline on April 21 and have since had service restored. An SOE rep states that "SOE's systems and databases are separate from PSN's," thus explaining how the company's games are still working -- and how your information wasn't stolen.

Meanwhile, as reported by our sister site Massively, SOE is working on a "make good plan" for Free Realms and DCUO players on the PlayStation 3, as well as holding a handful of in-game events across multiple games in the coming weeks.

Since PlayStation Network is down, there are some games rendered completely unplayable, notably Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Both are online-only games, which means the lack of PSN puts a whole world of hurt on anyone's ability to grind towards saving the world.

SOE sent an apologetic note to all players last night, which it passed onto me this afternoon:

"We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption," said the company. "As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events this weekend across our game portfolio, including a Double Station Cash day on Saturday, April 30th. We are also working on a 'make good' plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums. "

Whenever that "make good" plan is figured out, I'll make sure to pass on the details. For now, we wait.

Lanterns make it look so difficult to constantly keep the forces of evil at bay -- in all actuality, you can do so from the safety and comfort of your own home thanks to DC Universe Online. And once the MMO is available to download directly through the PlayStation Store, you'll be able to do so without leaving the safety and comfort of your musty, sunken-seated, curiously damp recliner. PlayStation Blog announced the title's forthcoming digital availability. No release date was revealed, but the downloadable version will retain the tangible version's $59.99 price tag. Sounds like a reasonable price to pay for a level of safety and comfort that will almost certainly lend itself to the development of bedsores.
