What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words “Chrono Trigger?” I’m sure a lot of things, but I bet the first thing on your mind right now is “When can I get it?”

We’re happy to confirm that Chrono Trigger is coming to the PSN in North America on October 4th. That’s right—in just a few days, you’ll be able to visit (or re-visit, as I’m sure is the case for many of you) one of the most hilarious and unique casts of characters ever assembled in an RPG:

crono-179x107.jpgCrono: The spiky-haired, stoic protagonist who finds himself wrapped up in events beyond his control. He’s pretty good with a katana and doesn’t run from a fight.

marle-179x107.jpgMarle: The requisite princess, but she’s no ordinary princess. How many princesses do you know that wield a crossbow?

lucca-179x107.jpgLucca: Chrono’s best friend since they were little kids. Oh, and she’s a supergenius who invents things such as the teleporter that starts your journey through time.

frog-179x107.jpgFrog: A knight from the middle ages, Frog is a man who has been cursed and turned into a giant anthropomorphic frog. But being a frog doesn’t prevent him from being a fantastic fighter—and having one of the coolest special attacks in the game.

robo-179x107.jpg

Robo: A robot from the future (I’ve always wanted to write that) who, after being repaired by Lucca, joins the party. Yes, a robot. With lasers!

ayla-179x107.jpg

Ayla: Hailing from prehistoric times, Ayla is tough. Really tough. She uses her enormous strength and agility to fight unarmed, and dishes out a lot of damage.

Travel through time to put things right and defeat the evil Lavos before he destroys everything!

There’s more than one way to save the world, of course, and Chrono Trigger respects that. In fact, the game has always been highly regarded for the number of different endings available. Have you got them all? If not, the time has come.

Robo, Lucca, Marle, Frog, Ayla, and Chrono are waiting for you.

Back in April of this year, PS3-owning JRPG fans got some great news. First, they found out that Final Fantasy VI would be coming to the PlayStation Network as a PSone Classic in North America. About a week later, similar news broke about Chrono Trigger, which was also deemed PSN-bound for American gamers...

It feels like we've come to the end of an era. It's been over four and a half years since the Wii's Virtual Console first went live. In that time, we've seen the re-release of nearly four hundred different retro titles some masterpieces, some duds and lots of in-between, average "classics" of yeste...

It's an oldie, but a goodie -- actually, you know what? It's a bestie. Square Enix's beloved SNES RPG Chrono Trigger arrives on the Wii Virtual Console for 800 Points, giving us yet another platform upon which to totally hang with Robo, Frog, Lucca, the prehistoric one, the princess, and that one wizard guy. Oh, Chrono Trigger. It has obviously been far too long.

Other games added today include Big Bass Arcade on DSiWare, in which bass -- preferably big bass -- are pulled from bodies of water using sticks and twine, and Natsume's gothic rhythm title, Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix for WiiWare. Check out the full list of new releases below!

Nintendo launched the Wii in late 2006, and along with it, the Virtual Console. This online method for re-purposing classic games as digital downloads has existed for four and a half years. In that time, a number of bona fide classics have hit the service, and yet up until now, one particularly gaping hole remained in the catalog of available Super Nintendo titles: Square Enix's much-beloved role-playing game, Chrono Trigger.

I bet just staring at that box art is giving you the vapors right about now.

Grumble indignantly about Squeenix's disdain for you and the rest of the series' fanbase no more, as the publisher will finally plug that Chrono Trigger-sized hole as of this Monday, May 16. The game will be available in the Virtual Console store for the standard SNES game price of 800 Wii Points ($8).

Finally, one of the greatest RPGs of all time will join such previously-released Super Nintendo masterpieces as Darius Twin, Cybernator, Vegas Stakes, Rival Turf, both goddamned Aero the Acro-Bat games, and Squeenix's own Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Oh, and a bunch of Mario games, I guess.

While this will likely only serve as a temporary distraction from your decade-long bitterness over Squeenix's almost remarkable unwillingness to further the series with a new installment, at least now people finally have a new way to appreciate this undeniable classic of the role-playing genre. After all, it's been, what, like three years since the DS version came out? That might as well be an eternity!

Hopefully we’ll be seeing this in the states, as we know the VC release is hitting Japan and Europe. I doubt that North America would be left out of the equation. For now, hit up the Japanese instruction booklet here.

Square Enix raised some ire by sending out a cease and desist against the release of a fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel, but the game has found its way out to the Internet anyway. Reddit user buu700 has posted what he says is a final build of Crimson Echoes, the sequel made by fans reusing the original game's sprites. He also leaked a game called Flames of Eternity a couple of weeks back, supposedly a fork of the fanmade title, which "diverged fairly heavily from what Crimson Echoes was intended to be."

Fans who've played the game say the characters are a little different than they remember (main character Crono, silent in the original, speaks, and a few of the dialects aren't quite right). But those hungry for some of the old 16-bit RPG magic will have to take what they can get -- at least until Squeenix's lawyers hear about it.

We're almost certainly approaching the apocalyptic future portrayed in Square Enix's best game ever, Chrono Trigger, as evidenced by the fact that the time-traveling epic RPG will soon be playable on the thing you use to make phone calls. A teaser site for a mobile version of Chrono Trigger has been uploaded in anticipation of Squeenix's Jump Festa 2011 presentation, revealing zero details about the project except for its Spring 2011 launch window.

It's far too early to guess whether the cellular iteration of the game will come stateside, though we imagine it would do quite well on the App Store circuit. We know we'd certainly buy it -- then, we'd send the phone back through time to ourselves in 1995, and watch our heads literally explode.

In a recent interview with Siliconera, Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart and lead designer Nathan Chapman pondered which of Square Enix's other RPG franchises they'd like to get their hands on post-Dungeon Siege 3. Their decision was unanimous: "If I could come across everything that I played I would have to go with Chrono Trigger," Urquhart explained. "I think Chrono Trigger was one I really enjoyed."

"I think we're going with Chrono Trigger because it has elements of a Western RPG," Chapman added. "It's more open, it's still mostly linear, but there are parts you can explore more." Yeah, we guess that's a good reason to go with Chrono Trigger. You know what's another good reason to go with Chrono Trigger? How about because Chrono Trigger is the best game ever made, and every video game developer in the world secretly wants to work on the next Chrono Trigger. We think that's a pretty good reason, too.

You have an empty shelf, right? Of course you do. So there's really no choice in the matter: You've got to fill it with something, and that something might as well be game merchandise. As luck would have it, we've got some particularly sweet merchandise in mind just for you. Specifically, we're talking about the nifty Chrono Trigger figures you see above -- or "Chrono Figures," if you prefer.

As Destructoid points out, the statues recreate scenes from the original SNES instruction booklet. Entertainment Earth has the figurines available for pre-order -- scheduled to ship this October -- with the set of 4 statues available for $40. There's no indication of the actual dimensions of each statue, though each certainly appears detailed. The only question that remains: Where's Marle?
