Here’s this week’s PlayStation Store Digital Comics update.

Another week with great comics for your PSP, including more epic Cap, another bottle of True Blood, more Sonic, the fabulous Street Code….and the legendary Bum Bum the Painter.

STREET CODE is the tale of Jack, a native New York bruiser, fed up with living in the dregs of a drug-addled Alphabet City. After escaping to a fresh start in Brooklyn, Jack must now negotiate a new strain of street logic–where most everything he encounters is not as it seems. With Street Code, creator Dean Haspiel returns to his semi-autobiographical roots and explores the emotional truths between prime and primate. Issue one is now available on your PSP – oh, and it’s FREE, so check it out.

Elsewhere, the stunning Brubaker/Epting Captain America saga continues with “The Man Who Bought America”, where the Red Skull makes an unexpected move for the very soul of America.

Back in sun-drenched Bon Temps, True Blood continues with another fine adaptation of the hit TV show. In issue #2, psychic waitress and vampire fetishist Sookie Stackhouse is forced to reveal her deepest, most shameful secret to save the lives of Bill and her friends. A new Sonic The Hedgehog series launches this week from Archie Comics. Alongside everyone’s favorite blue anthropomorphic hedgehog, Sonic Universe stars Blaze the Cat, Marine the Raccoon, Rouge the Bat, Metal Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles and many more mischievous oiks up to no good. The “Living Weapons” arc kicks things off with a bang in issue #1.

This edition features Scott Pilgrim, Shank, ‘Marvel-ous LittleBigPlanet’ add-ons, along with the Top 10 Avatars available. There’s also the new Top Gun game which made the PULSE crew want to rent this 80′s action classic (which by the way is currently available for rental or purchase on the video side of PlayStation Store.)

In about a month, people who purchased a 3-month subscription to PlayStation Plus will be faced with one crucial question. What happens to my games when my subscription ends? Joystiq had access to a press-only 1 month trial, and recently found out the answer. Sony's premium online subscription service has offered a number of "free" games -- full PSN games, like WipEout HD and Critter Crunch, and a variety of Minis and PSone classics. However, these titles were all made available with a caveat: they'd remain accessible for as long as your subscription remained active.

Attempting to launch an expired game will trigger this prompt: "This content can be used if you renew the license in PlayStation Store." You'll be able to launch directly into the PlayStation Store, where you will be able to purchase the expired title. For example, we could purchase Aero Racer for its full price of $2.99 from the PlayStation Store. We could also choose to purchase a new PlayStation Plus subscription to extend the license.

Curiously, PSone games (like Syphon Filter) appear to work even after the Plus subscription ends. Although clearly marked as Expired under the game's "Details," the game launches normally. It's unclear if this is simply an oversight, or if this content is meant to be free, even after the end of a subscription (much like downloaded avatars and XMB themes). Nevertheless, we've asked Sony to clarify because, hey - permanently free games makes PlayStation Plus a much more palatable offer! If it's a glitch, you can look forward to another mandatory firmware update sometime soon (sorry!).

Here’s this week’s PlayStation Store Digital Comics update.

DC Comics release the first two issues of one of my favorite comics series Y: The Last Man. If you’ve not heard about it the premise is simple. A mysterious plague has killed every man (and beast) on earth except Yorick Brown and his pet monkey. Now this may sound like a good thing for Yorick, as it’ll be up to him to repopulate the human race, but the world he wakes up to is a confused & dangerous. There are even some women who call themselves the Amazons claiming that nature wiped out the oppressive men so that the fairer sex could take over the world. Brian K. Vaughan (Runaways) has really created a thought provoking series and I highly recommend.

DC also brings you a free copy of Safe Inside (Zuda) and we start a new series of Green Lantern: No Fear.

From Marvel this week we have all 5 issues of Venom: Dark Origin in which we discover the true twisted roots that gave rise to a lifetime of malevolence for Eddie Brock.

We also see the first issue of a book that follows the exploits of a gun-wielding monkey assassin. The simian witnesses the destruction of his tribe at the hands of a bunch of armed men. With no family and no home, the only thing left for him to do was avenge his fallen brothers. “And thus the legend was born. A killer of killers, forever to be known… as Hit-Monkey”

For the follow up to 2007’s Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, developer IO Interactive has decided to present the sequel from Lynch’s point of view. So what’s it like seeing the world through the eyes of a warped psychopath? About what you would expect—disturbing and occasionally disorienting. Qore presents a sneak peek at the frantic action, including a preview of the popular online “Fragile Alliance” mode.

Namco’s 1988 arcade game, Splatterhouse, attracted a bit of controversy for its violent nature. In fact, in those pre-ESRB days, the home console version was released with an “inappropriate for young children…and cowards” warning on the box. The next-gen reboot of the franchise isn’t shying away from controversy either—we almost couldn’t show it to you! Audrey Cleo spoke to Namco’s producer about what it took to bring Rick back to life.

Amidst the pomp and circumstance that is E3, Veronica Belmont and the Qore team made it a point to search for great games that might have gotten lost in the crowd. TerRover is just such a game. Don’t let the cartoonish design and colorful visual style fool you—as with most classic games, this one will be easy to learn but difficult to master .

In the latest installment of “On the road with Qore,” Veronica visits Kyoto, Japan—home to historic temples and shrines and a world-famous manga museum. Very cool stuff. She also pays a visit to the famous snow monkeys who are perfect for making Kyoto-inspired PlayStation 3 cover designs using the interactive Box Creator. And, some of our favorite Osaka-inspired creations are displayed in this episode. Is your submission one of them?

If our TerRover coverage has captured your interest, why not take the little rover for a test drive in our early-access exclusive demo? All single episode purchasers and subscribers will be able to sample five of the more than 40 different levels to be found in the complete game. Hello, PlayStation World! I’m back to share our most exciting news of the year. We’re thrilled to let you know about our upcoming PlayStation Network exclusive, TerRover. We’ve been working hard on this one for a while, and we’re eager to let you get your hands on it and discover the engaging gameplay for yourselves.

You can do just that with the free demo of TerRover available with both versions of Qore tomorrow. Plus, you can watch the (hopefully not-embarrassing) interview with me at E3, chatting it up with Veronica about why the game is so much fun.

The TerRover is a cute little robot buggy with a big smile and warm heart in need of your help to find a new planetary home for him and his friends. The TerRover’s controls aren’t quite like anything else out there. His head slides back and forth across his body as you change direction. One button press places his head under his body to turn him over. And most importantly, the left stick lets you pivot your TerRover up and down from either end. You’ll need to master this skill in order to save the TerRover population!

You get weapons and tools, too. Choose from various chassis equipped with rocket launchers, magnet cables and more. They’ll come in handy in tight spots, and assist in collecting all the mechanical parts scattered about and discovering the numerous secret areas and hidden passages. You’ll find yourself aching to come back and explore every inch of every level.

Sad news for fans of the animated series Metalocalypse, as Siliconera reports that Adult Swim "pulled the license" on Metalocalypse: Dethgame. Originally under development at Frozen Codebase, the beat-'em-up was set to appear on Xbox Live and PSN at the tail-end of 2009, courtesy of Konami. So much for that.

We've followed up with Konami to confirm, but it looks like Dethgame ain't happening. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have a Hatredcopter to board and a target to attack that has nothing to do with this news. Nope, nothing whatsoever.

We’ve got a huge update this week for the PlayStation Store Digital Comics. First off, you can now buy a complete digital comic series or story arcs. This is perfect for all of you comic readers who want to buy a full series rather than have to buy each issue individually. New Release highlights:

We have two more free comics from DC this week. The first: Bottle of Awesome #1. Billy Butterman is a loser, a putz. High school is a total nightmare: all the cool guys pick on him, girls ignore him. That is, until the day he encounters a mysterious hobo, who urges him into drink from a bottle of awesome. However, he warns Billy not to drink too much, for a person can become too awesome. Will Billy heed his words?

The second free comic introduces us to the world of Ex Machina which Publishers Weekly described as “…half X-Files, half West Wing and 100% genius”. EX MACHINA is far from a traditional “cape and tights” adventure story. It is a sophisticated superhero story for readers who are sceptical of anyone who can jump over a building in a single bound.

IDW continues the epic tale of Dragon Age, the second issue is out now! We also see Jurassic Park #1 – It’s been 13 years since little Tim and Lex Murphy escaped from the island of Isla Sorna, and recent public opinion has reversed, with the world clamouring for authorities to re-open Jurassic Park! With the help of their controversial Granddad’s inheritance and their own sharp wits, a secret deal is struck to open a new park! This time they’ll get it right…right? Bob Schreck makes his writing debut on this all-new tale, under covers from fellow industry legends Frank Miller and Tom Yeates!

Sad to say but today is the final day of Comic-Con 2010. For all of you Digital Comic readers, as promised we have a special memento to offer from this year’s convention. Vampires seem to be one of the few mythological creatures we just can’t seem to get enough of. They’ve become the embodiments of many of the darker impulses in the human condition and our need to express/explore them. They can be metaphors for the lonely “outsider.” They can represent the scarily tempting, deeply disturbing, and often repressive side of human sexuality. They can be impossibly beautiful or hideously monstrous. Whether they’re soulless atrocities or tragically misunderstood, they’ve managed to capture our collective imagination like very few other horror creatures, and they’re portrayed in a more nuanced way than most of our nightmares ever are.

True Blood is no exception. But it isn’t quite like Ye Olde Vampyre Tales, either. While many of the metaphoric elements are still intact, they don’t really mess around with being coy. It’s a very raw look at vampires, and in many ways a very raw look at humanity and life itself. It’s more passionate, more violent. More everything. And it’s not afraid to dip into the larger pool of myth, either, with shape shifters and werewolves and Greek goddesses…and who knows what else still to come.

Working on the comic with Alan Ball, Kate Barnow, Elizabeth Finch, David Tischman, and David Messina, has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Not to mention my first official writing gig in comics. It’s very exciting and scary and most of all: fun. There are very few “worlds” as creatively open to play in as True Blood, and the team really let us explore the characters in ways I hope fans will enjoy. There’s still plenty of sex, violence, and gore…But, just like the show, there’s a lot more going on. There’s a mystery to be solved, a creepy new monster to deal with (where we dipped a bit into local Louisiana mythology ourselves), and all the characters are forced to reveal secrets from their pasts they’ve never shared with anyone before. Things most of us would be happy to go to our graves never telling even our nearest and dearest.

Personally, vampires have never really “scared” me in that booga-booga sense. But they do horrify. I mean, drinking blood seems incredibly gross to me, for one thing. Not to mention the fact that you have to kill another person to keep “living” your undead life. Lack of daylight I’m mostly okay with, though I’d miss sunsets over the ocean fiercely. But it’s losing everyone you love to age and death, while you stay the same, that’s truly horrifying. Because I kind of like the idea of immortality sometimes. Doesn’t everyone? You know, when it’s late at night and no one else is around and you realize that you’re going to cease being at some point and there are so many things you’re going to miss. That’s when the idea of never growing any older, of never dying, is most tempting. And maybe that tradeoff is worth a little blood sucking, right?

Maybe that’s what’s so intriguing about Bon Temps and the characters that inhabit True Blood. The sense that, deep down, a lot of them are thinking the same thing.

I hope you like our little True Blood story. I hope you find it as fun, romantic, scary, funny, sexy, and raw as the show. And if it makes you wonder, even a little, if you might make a good vampire, well…I won’t judge.
