#playstationnetwork It's time for the second season of Sony's The Tester, and there's a whole new group of eager job applicants this time around, along with a brand-new liveblogger covering the festivities. Join us, won't you? More »

We introduced the new cast, including our first-ever nationwide online casting contest winner. The panelists are set. Will Powers is fired up. And the sneak peeks and ‘Download & Win’ sweepstakes have been revealed. So what else is left? Yup, you guessed it – it’s time to watch “The Tester!”

Later today, Episode 1 of PlayStation Network’s original competitive reality series, “The Tester 2” will premiere on PlayStation Store and in PlayStation Home.

The first season brought in more than 2.5 million downloads and produced a ton of excitement from the show’s fans and we think that excitement will continue into season 2. We went bigger and bolder for the production of “The Tester 2” with more “behind-the-scenes” with the cast, tougher challenges featuring games such as Medal of Honor and Gran Turismo 5, longer episodes, and even more surprises down the road!

Adrianne Curry and Brent Gocke will sit alongside guest panelists, like Stig Asmussen and Ted Price, to decide the fate of these 12 hardcore gamers competing to win a job as an official PlayStation game tester for SCEA’s Quality Assurance department in San Diego, Calif.

"I hope five years from now we'll be winning Emmys for quality shows," PlayStation Network director Susan Panico said to Joystiq, imagining programming on the level of HBO's Entourage or The Sopranos. She was speaking sincerely about the platform's vision for original content.

PSN might be synonymous with gaming, but going forward, Panico hopes it will also be recognized for its original video programming, which currently includes Pulse, Qore and The Tester, a reality competition show about winning a job as a PlayStation game tester, recently renewed for a second season.

"I look at what HBO has done over several years, where they started just offering movies and went into the original production business," Panico said, revealing high aspirations for PSN's original content. "By no means am I putting The Tester with The Sopranos and what have you," she clarified, "but if you want to make yourself the go-to destination for content, you need to provide content that people can't get anywhere else."

"We look at original programming and The Tester as the foundation for building out something much bigger."

With the holiday calendar flying by faster than Ezio Auditore free running across rooftops in Firenze, November’s Episode 30 focuses on the fantastic fun you don’t want to miss this holiday season.

Of course, first up, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is this episode’s lead story and in our preview Veronica Belmont spends some hands-on time with the game and talks to Ubisoft Missions Director, Gaelic Simard about this vastly expanded environment including vistas of Renaissance Rome in High Def along with the very cool game mode allowing players to recruit and deploy a posse of up and coming assassins.

With Kratos coming back to your PSP system in the new God of War: Ghost of Sparta tomorrow, Veronica sharpens her Blades of Athena to slice and dice her way through another larger-than-life God of War adventure. Game Director Dana Jan explains the development team’s approach to maintaining the grand scale and epic gameplay of a God of War title on the PSP system.

And, yes, it does play large.

Qore also went behind-the-scenes of the ‘God of War: Game Directors Live’ production. This historic event brought together the development leads of the five God of War titles for a roundtable covering the evolution of the franchise. Audrey Cleo’s reports from the event with interviews of David Jaffe, Cory Barlog, Ru Weerasuriya, Stig Asmussen, and, again, Dana Jan along with a sneak peek of the finished discussion. Very cool.

“Planetary (Go!)”, a track from the upcoming album by My Chemical Romance has been selected as the opening song for Gran Turismo 5. Audrey Cleo hangs with the band as they get their hands on the game and they talk about making the new album, driving fast cars and the thrill of having their song chosen for the game!

With the new TRON: Legacy, the motion picture, and TRON: Evolution, the video game, rolling out during this holiday season, Qore catches up with Steven Lisberger the writer/director of the original movie along with Legacy Producer, Sean Bailey and Game Director, Darren Hedges to explore how the movie and game work together to expand (and maybe explain?) the full sci-fi universe of TRON.

In this month’s Download Center – Qore subscribers can pick up the Mousetrap Mod and Kart pack for ModNation Racers. In case you haven’t checked these games out yet, all Qore viewers have access to the ModNation Racers demo and the Vanquish Official Demo.

"It Only Does Everything," says the PS3's ad campaign. But how many users actually know how to take advantage of all of the system's features out of the box? With PS3 increasingly positioning itself as a be-all entertainment device, Sony is forced to confront the XMB's clutter of icons, which may be befuddling mainstream consumers.

PSN director Susan Panico told us that Sony is currently "creating educational videos that will be a great welcome kit for people that are coming to the PS3 and the PlayStation Network," which aim to "really walk them through all the advantages you get from the PlayStation Network," including the store. The videos "will answer questions like, 'How do I have Netflix movies stream on my PS3?' And it will certainly talk about original content available," Panico noted, referring to PSN productions like The Tester and Pulse. "That's something that's really important to us -- to make sure people understand from the get-go how to find all this great content."

While many of the details are still being ironed out, the how-to videos will appear both on the web and on the XMB. "Primarily, it's going to be content that you find very easily on PlayStation.com, as well as on the console itself," Panico said, though "we haven't decided where it's going to live on the XMB." Presumably, it'll be in a prime position, lest Sony find itself posting a "How to find the how-to videos" video.

So, you had big plans for this Thursday morning, all involving using the PS3's online services? Maybe you had your eye on a new demo on the PlayStation Store? Maybe you wanted to confuse the bejeezus out of some fools with a little Quincying to start your day? Well, you can't. The PlayStation Network is down, and should stay that way until around 6:30 p.m. EST. Europeans can look forward to their PSN going offline between 16:00 today and 00:30 BST tomorrow morning.

This downtime is set aside for the service's regularly scheduled maintenance, which is necessary, we suppose. We mean, have you ever worked in the same building as a server that hasn't been washed in a month or two? Those things can develop some wicked B.O..

PlayStation Network will undergo maintenance tomorrow, October 28. Maintenance is expected to start at just after 7:00 am Pacific and will last for several hours, until approximately 3:30 pm Pacific. During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home or Account Management, and may encounter difficulty while signing in to PSN.

Hi everyone! The trick or treating season is upon us, and here is a ghoulish comic update to entertain you and your zombie friends.

Today, we’re excited to share news of the launch of PlayStation Rewards, a new program that recognizes and rewards our users for simply doing what they love – playing games and interacting with the entertainment content that PlayStation has to offer. We really wanted to create something that says, “thank you” for being a loyal PlayStation fan.

In its initial launch tomorrow (Oct. 28th), PlayStation Rewards will be an invitation-only beta to all eligible PlayStation Plus and Gamer Advisory Panel (GAP) members. We’re kicking things off as a beta so that we can get feedback from our most loyal fans in order to make it the best possible rewards program it can be. It’s also worth noting that during the beta phase, the program will be focused on PlayStation 3 owners, but we hope to include PSP users as well not too far down the road. Oh, and one more thing: PlayStation Rewards will be free – there is no fee to join!

Now, to give you a bit more details on the new loyalty program… PlayStation Rewards is designed to give you the opportunity to gain exclusive status, recognition, and rewards as a thank you for your continued interest in PlayStation. And, the best part is that you don’t have to do anything different. Keep playing new games, buying content purchased from PlayStation Network in the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home, download movies and TV shows, or just communicate with us by taking one of our surveys, for example, and you’ll now be recognized for it.

The more you play and participate, the more progress you’ll make through our three reward tiers — “Select,” “Pro,” and “Legendary.” As your status increases, so do the rewards. And if you want to check out your current status level, simply go to your private profile page and look at the reward progress meter.

So what do you get? Right now, rewards include things like…

• Exclusive PSN avatars that display member status in the program
• Exclusive dynamic themes and PlayStation Home content
• Opportunities throughout the program year to participate in members-only sweepstakes and giveaways for experiences and merchandise you won’t find elsewhere (The first of which is an all expenses paid trip to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, as PlayStation’s guest)

Hi All!

Here’s this week’s PlayStation Store Comics update. It’s a huge update once again with 69 comics, and a lot of highlights.

Kicking it off, we have a treat from Marvel with the adaptation of Raymond E. Feist’s acclaimed fantasy saga Magician. Starting with Magician: Apprentice #1-6. These first six issues introduce young orphan Pug and follow his coming of age in the increasingly troubled world of Midkemia – a gripping story that will see our hero and his friend Tomas swept up into their world’s conflict with some terrible consequences.

Also in this week is DC (Wildstorm)’s Red. In this Warren Ellis’ created series we meet Paul Moses, a retired CIA agent who wants to put his past behind him and live in complete peace. But he knows too much, and his peaceful retirement is to come to an end one way or another when a three-man hit team knocks on his door. Also out are three more issues based on the freshly released movie: Red: Franck, Red: Joe and Red: Victoria. Take your pick!

Next up is the very topical Trick’r Treat, adapted from the dark comedy/horror movie of the same name. This anthology of four Halloween-related scary stories has vicious killers, zombies, demons and werewolves – all you need for the Halloween weekend! Parts #1 and #2 are available today and the two others will be coming very soon.

We’re also delighted to bring you Ratchet & Clank #1, adapted from the franchise we all know and love. With Dr. Nefarious defeated and the universe safe, galactic heroes Ratchet and Clank return to the Solana galaxy for some well-earned rest and relaxation… Or so they think! A nice adaptation and a must for the fans of the game series.

We also have something for True Blood fans with True Blood #4, more Batman, Wonder Woman and Y: The Last Man for those who have been asking for these comics, and one extra treat for gamers with Dragon Age #4.

Next month marks one of the biggest handheld releases of the year. We learn, for the first time, of the events that took place between two heavy hitting games in the PlayStation family. God of War: Ghost of Sparta shows what events took place between Kratos’s adventures in God of War and God of War II. Do you need a little refresher in the series? Well, we’ve got you covered.

Just like Blu-ray disc fans, newcomers to the series can experience the epic journey of God of War and God of War II remastered in 720p. Both games are running at a smooth 60 frames per second, giving PS3 gamers a smooth gameplay experience. Also, an important fact for any trophy hunters, each game has a full set of trophies! PlayStation Plus subscribers looking to get a taste of his vengeance can download a full-game trial of each game. The countdown to the debut of “The Tester” Season 2 is now underway with just two weeks to go until the Season Premiere on Tuesday, November 2nd. The new season promises to be bigger and bolder with more behind-the-scenes with the cast, bigger challenges, and, as many of you requested, longer episodes. For a taste of what’s to come, here’s the first-ever glimpse at the new season!

This trailer, in all its HD glory, is also available from PlayStation Store later today along with “The Tester” theme featuring the cast and panelists. You’ll find both in the “Media” section under “The Tester” icon.

And, next Tuesday, we’ll be releasing a Preview Show featuring hilarious casting submission outtakes and more about each cast member. Finally, you’ll also be able to follow “The Tester” on Facebook with the show’s new tab on the PlayStation Facebook page. The new tab will allow you to “Like” your favorite cast members and watch previews of each week’s new episode during the season.

We’re very excited about the upcoming Season 2 and hope you’ll join us on the PlayStation Network on Tuesday, November 2 when Meredith Molinari, Adrianne Curry, Brent Gocke and Guest Panelist, Stig Asmussen make the first decisions on who stays in the PlayStation loft…and who goes home first.

We just wanted to let you guys know that the Qore Ultimate Arqade will be available tomorrow via the October – Episode 29. Qore annual subscribers just need to check out the Episode 29 Download Center tomorrow to grab this collection of all of your favorite quirky Qore mini games that you’ll be able to play right from the XMB of your PS3 system.

Meanwhile, the Qore team is pulling together what promises to be a packed November episode. The main stories currently planned include Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Tron: Evolution and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Look for Qore Episode 30 on November 2nd.

Estimating the global Xbox 360 install base to be somewhere between 40 and 50 million units, Foundation 9 CEO James North-Hearn has suggested that around 30 percent of owners are "not only online and using Xbox Live, but all those and buying games." In a recent interview with Eurogamer, he claimed, "Certainly XBLA is past tipping point now."

He also stuck up for XBLA's competition, the PlayStation Network. "Even though it's a smaller user base, and even though it's generally accepted as currently not being as successful or popular, it's definitely growing," he said. "There's less competition on PSN, but currently a smaller user base." As for the future, North-Hearn believes "the market will move to both online and to digital distribution at some point, almost exclusively."

And Foundation 9 likely hope that's the case -- its six studios developed roughly 15 percent of the games on XBLA, including Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. North-Hearn even seems to believe "cloud solutions" could come to XBLA and PSN at some point in the future, saying that's "where the market's going to go" and that both channels are "in a great position."

If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/netflix/">Netflix</a> on your PS3, here is the news you’ve been waiting for: starting Monday, October 18 you’ll be able to instantly watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console.

In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user interface that brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts.

This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Afternoon all! Hope you liked last week’s huge update, we have more for you this week including some comics you have been waiting for…

First off, a brand new Transformers series, Transformers: Drift, starts with issue #1. This four-part mini-series chronicles Drift’s origins as the Decepticon Dreadlock (!) and how he became an Autobot. In this first part Drift attempts to uncover the secret behind his mysterious rescuers… with shocking results!

We also have more Y: The Last Man in store for you with issue #9 out this week. Yorick finally uncovers the dark secrets his hosts have been hiding, and he’s also unexpectedly reunited with someone from his past… I’m not telling you who!

DC’s brilliant series Sandman also continues with issues #4 and #5. Morpheus travels to Hell and then has a pretty tumultuous encounter with Dr. Destiny, who has his eye on something that doesn’t belong to him… Guest-starring Mister Miracle and Martian Manhunter!

And for Batman fans we have three nice additions this week: Batman #676 and #677, starting the “Batman: R.I.P.” story arc… Another pretty epic storyline as you can guess! Superman/Batman is also back with issue #32, part 5 of “The Enemies Among Us” – where a crazed Superman goes against a super-powered Batman.

Also in this week is a brand new series from Markosia, Hero 9 to 5. This very fresh take on superheroes is set in a world where being one is just a job, and where the rich can afford the best heroes and the poor get the government sponsored agency… “Heroes for Zeros”! On their payroll is Jacob Reilly, a regular guy who just happens to be able to shoot flames from his hands, and whose girlfriend is also his alter-ego’s nemesis! All four issues available now.

And finally, Disney are bringing a very nice adaptation of the animated movie Up to the store. To escape a life in a retirement home, budding great explorer Carl rigs his house into a hot-air balloon, and steals away… with an unexpected stowaway on board! Fantastic story which is worth a read.

It’s been almost six months since the end of the inaugural season of “The Tester”. In April, we introduced you to our first winner, Will “Cyrus” Powers. As we prepare for the second season of “The Tester,” set to premiere on Tuesday, November 2, we thought it would be a good time to catch up with Will about his experience as a QA Tester for PlayStation, how it has affected his gaming habits and impacted his trophy collection. So what’s up with Will these days? Well, here’s what we learned…

Kevin Furuichi, executive producer for PlayStation Network: It has been six months since you started working at Sony. What has the experience been like?

Will Powers, winner of “The Tester”: The experience overall has been a blast. Testing may not be a super glamorous position, but its importance within the industry cannot be overstated. Being able to get my hands on games six months, sometimes even a year, before they are released is still just as exhilarating as it was the first time. But, the most rewarding part of the job? As simple as it sounds, just seeing my name in the credits of a game triggers a feeling of accomplishment that will never get old.

KF: What is working as a QA Tester like? In your opinion, what was the biggest takeaway of your work experience? How has the hard work paid off for you?

WP: Being a QA Tester is a great experience for anyone looking to get into the industry. That’s something that is invaluable about having a firsthand experience seeing how a game comes together from start to finish. Once you have experienced this, you have a greater appreciation for any game as a whole, and the amount of work that goes into it. I’d like to think that all of the hard work I’ve put into this has paid off. I approach situations with the mindset that every contact you make is an important one and I think people in the industry appreciate when people are genuine with them.

KF: Do you still keep in contact with a lot of the cast?

WP: I do keep in contact with a lot of the cast. A cool little trip I had the chance to take was attending E3, where I got the opportunity to hang with “Amped,” “Doc,” and “Nauseous” from the show. But on a regular basis, I often find myself playing co-op or competitive multiplayer with these people, because we’re all always online.

KF: How’s the trophy hunt going? At the end of Season 1, you were sitting at 39 platinum trophies. Any recent trophies that you are especially proud of?

WP: Ha! Funny that you might ask. Recently I surpassed the 3000 trophy point as well as attained my 45th platinum trophy. The Killzone 2 platinum was a particular beast. Between being in the top 1% of all of the online players, to beating the game on Elite difficulty, this is one of the prizes in my collection.

KF: How does being a QA Tester change your gaming habits? What game is currently in your PS3 or PSP?

WP: Great question! It most certainly does change your gaming habits. We joke about it being sort of a “curse” if you let it. I find myself accidentally “breaking” games when I go home. But in the end, I just have to focus on enjoying the games and PLAYING them normally instead of TESTING the games. Currently? I’m running through Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition. Playing co-op with the PlayStation Move on that game is so much fun, I just can’t get enough of it. It truly has breathed new life into that game. As far as the PSPgo(es)… see what I did there? *laughs* I haven’t been able to put Valkyria Chronicles II down. This is actually my favorite franchise, and despite the naysayers about this franchise going portable, I think I’d go out on a limb and say that I like this second installment into the series even more than the original.

KF: Let’s talk about the upcoming new season. Tell us what you think of the cast for Season 2. Have you picked a favorite?

WP: It’s hard for me to objectively look at the cast of Season 2, since there will obviously be comparisons to last year’s cast (and I have a personal bias toward them). However, I’m looking forward to seeing what new things these 12 contestants are going to bring to the table. Because from everything I’ve heard, Season 2 is going to be bigger and better than Season 1 in every aspect. For those reasons, I’m not picking a favorite. However, that’s not to say that there won’t be a betting pool here at work as to who our next co-worker will be!

KF: You got a sneak peek at the Season 2 trailer, what are your expectations for the new season?

WP: They’re in for a lot of surprises this season, for sure! The challenges are harder, the panelists are tougher, and the stakes are higher this season. Let’s just hope all 12 contestants brought their A-games, otherwise they’re going to be sent packing, and quickly!

KF: If there is one thing that you would like to tell the winner of the second season, what would it be?

WP: Make the most of it! The job is a foot in the door into the industry, but it’s up to you what you do with it after that. So, take this great opportunity that you fought tooth and nail to win, and make something of it!

We’re releasing it on next Tuesday, October 19 with the Preview Show on Tuesday, October 26 and then the Season Premiere on Tuesday, November 2.
