#masseffect Reader Sgt.LulzJager has kept the same female Commander Shepard model across all three Mass Effect games. That's a lot of time spent with the same character. So it didn't take long for him to notice something different about her in Mass Effect 3. More »

#masseffect Before the default female Commander Shepard received her very public and slightly drastic makeover, artists had to come up with a ton of ideas on just what she could/would look like. More »

In the future, after Bill Pullman is long dead and unable to deliver emphatic speeches, it will take the stirring words of MaleShep and Mass Effect 3 review scores from major outlets to motivate the galaxy to stand up against the Reaper threat.

Mass Effect fans remember the scene well. It is the opening moments of Mass Effect 2 and the Collectors have zeroed in on the Normandy and its crew, unleashing a horrific assault on the ship. People scramble to escape, and our hero Shepard works to get everyone off of the ship in one piece, finall...

#masseffect If you've played any of BioWare's Mass Effect titles, you might have come across Kalisah Bint Sinan Al-Jilani, a reporter that you meet on the Citadel. Electronic Arts has announced that 3.5 million copies of Mass Effect 3 have been shipped worldwide. The number makes Mass Effect 3 the largest entertainment launch of the year thus far. EA boss John Riccitello has stated that customers bought 890,000 copies in North America alone on launch day earlier this week, reports VentureBeat. The executive's comments were made during the Wedbush Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference, where he noted that Mass Effect 3 is meeting EA's expectations and that the company is "happy" about the results so far.

Riccitiello also mentioned sales of Mass Effect 3 downloadable content, which are already doing quite well. 40 percent of customers who purchased Mass Effect 3 from a local GameStop also purchased DLC, the highest tie ratio for downloadable content the retailer has ever seen.

Concerning EA's other major sci-fi property, Riccitiello said that Star Wars: The Old Republic is still doing well for the company. The MMO currently has 1.7 million active subscribers. Those keeping score will remember that this is the same number EA reported last month. The important distinction is that now, according to Riccitiello, the "vast majority" of players have passed the free 30 day trial period that comes with new copies of the game, meaning they are now paying subscribers.

My Shepard isn’t saving the universe in Mass Effect 3. I wanted her to, but as I play through the final instalment, she’s still stuck half-way through the immeasurably dull scanning missions that would ensure Mordin and my other best people survive Operation: Certain Death. Instead, I’m playing with someone else. She looks the same – red hair, the right eyes, the same voice and the same no-nonsense approach to saving the galaxy. She’s even had many of the same experiences. But she’s not my Shepard. She’s Bioware’s – the sum of their choices.

And while I’m sure I could find a Shepard closer to my own, ready to import, from Mass Effect 2 Saves, that’s even worse. Mass Effect is inherently a sum of Bioware’s choices – a few more in character creation hardly makes much of a difference. But to just climb into someone else’s story? That feels… weird. In an era where ownership of our own characters is an increasingly rare privilege, you may as well ask to borrow another gamer’s underpants…

Got an email today informing me that my ME3 pre-order has been canceled (though they are offering a refund on the deposit plus a £5 voucher) and that the ME3 Collector's Edition is limited to four websites. Looks like I'm gonna have to go sort out a new preorder on Amazon, assuming I have enough money in my bank account (my brother was planning on paying for the majority of it).

Some instances of Commander Shepard are embarking on Mass Effect 3's climactic campaign with some alterations. The galaxy's most important (and most imported) face is not being properly preserved in the transfer between some games of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 (ours included), prompting BioWare to work on a correction.

According to BioWare's Community Coordinator, Chris Priestly, "The issue is likely in how faces were detected when imported from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2, and we're working on the best way to correct it for affected players." In our experience, a wonky import process only messes with facial data, and none of Shepard's recorded actions throughout the previous games.

If you're driven mad by inconsistent canon -- or can't bear the thought of Shepard being vain enough to get some touch-ups before his last stand -- BioWare is pointing you to a set of user-made tools for the PC version. As far as we know, this is the only time we'll ever recommend DIY facial surgery.

Jim’s already judged Bioware’s new guns’n'conversation epic, while I am a mere 6-7 hours into Mass Effect 3. What I have done that he hasn’t is pick up the contentious From Ashes DLC, allegedly developed after work on the main game was completed and included in the £55 Collector’s Edition, or as a £6/$10 addon to the standard edition. I forked out for the latter, and thus have an extra dude in my crew. We’ve already pondered about whether it should have been part of the core game in concept, but now it’s time to look at it what it actually includes.

I’ve avoided all major storyline spoilers outside of the core concept of From Ashes – if you already own it and want to go in totally blind, I would strongly advise against reading the below. And if you are 100% spoiler-averse about ME3 in general, I would also avoid reading the below. I’ve steered clear of any discussion of plot outcomes, but I do talk about the nature of the new character – stuff you’d find out for yourself not long after meeting him, but I do understand that might be too spoilersome for some. The Reapers have come to Earth and are prepared to reset the galaxy's organic life once again. Unless, of course, Commander Shepard and the crew the Normandy can rally sentient life to stop the extinction event. Thankfully, BioWare "doesn't blow it" in the conclusion to this epic space opera, let's see what other outlets thought.
  • Eurogamer (100/100): "Taken as a whole this is arguably the first truly modern blockbuster, a game that transcends the genre boundaries of old and takes what it needs from across the gaming spectrum in order to finish its story in the most compelling, thrilling, heartbreaking way possible. Few gaming sagas come to a definitive close, but this one signs off in breathtaking style."
  • OXM (95/100): "From the visceral combat to the excitement of finishing Shepard's 100-hour fight, Mass Effect 3 is a rare, magnetically engaging treat that'll compel you to stay up well past your bedtime to do "just one more quest."
  • EGM (90/100): "Some cover and combat issues remain unsolved, though, and the idea of participation in a completely separate multiplayer mode potentially influencing your single-player ending is mind-boggling."
  • Giant Bomb (4/5): "The value in this story is from seeing characters you adore dealing with a continuing situation. Even though it doesn't come together quite as successfully as it did in the previous games, those of you with an attachment to the Mass Effect universe should still play it."
