If you've been ignoring The Last Story because you didn't want to get interested in a game you'd never be able to play, well, it's time to start watching trailers. And there's no better place to start than with this European trailer directed by Mistwalker's Hironobu Sakaguchi himself.

Like the European release of Xenoblade Chronicles, this version of The Last Story has quite British voice acting. American publisher XSEED hasn't made any announcements about how it would handle voice recording, but we expect to hear the same accents when the North American version shows up this summer.

It's a familiar mix of wonder and frustration, and it's eclipsed by Monolith's more intoxicating vision of the JRPG's future. The end result is a tale that's worth hearing out, but hard to hold dear.

UPPERS
Brilliant, sweeping battlefields
Slick, varied and exciting combat: part-RPG, part-third person action game
Trims all the fat, making for a lightning-paced adventure

DOWNERS
Cliché-riddled characters straight out of 1986
Frame rate judders badly during exploration
Bit of a pushover

A portion of an ONM review...

A strong, often memorable adventure with a likeable cast and a clutch of interesting mechanics, The Last Story is a robust release in the Wii's twilight months, mostly matching its pedigree with a compelling, wistful tale of courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

Have you ever felt that JRPGs can be a bit well, sterile? That you're essentially walking down a series of very pretty corridors dressed up as castles or forests or caves full of doors you can't open, knee-high walls that you can't jump over and enemies that can only be fought in separate, specially...

A portion of a Nintendo Life review...

When the game engine performs it's terrific, but too often it struggles and significantly impacts your ability to control the action. The Last Story's many strengths, however, ensure that it's a story that can't be missed.

Five years ago you really wouldn't have thought that the Wii would be the place to find the future of the Japanese RPG. Hell, even two years ago you wouldn't have believed it. Everybody was too dazzled by the gorgeous graphics of Square-Enix's Final Fantasy demos on PlayStation 3 to give the Wii a s...
