DotA burst forth from the Warcraft III mod scene with a mighty roar and a shower of blood, each drop growing into another independent MOBA, but tower defence games were a more creeping success. Oh sure, they’d been around before, but they bred madly in that weird environment then escaped into the wild. And, much like DotA, what’s followed has never really strayed far from the original formula. 11 Bit Studios played with flipping it in Anomaly: Warzone Earth, controlling soldiers fighting through alien fortifications, but couldn’t resist the lure of tower defence forever.

Its newly-announced Anomaly Defenders is a reverse-tower offence (or a reverse-reverse-tower defence) with the radical idea of building static defences to ward off advancing enemies.

While Anomaly: Korea was lovely, it wasn't much of a sequel to the right war game for the iPad. 11 Bit Studios delivers a proper follow-up to the reverse tower defense hit this fall, when Anomaly 2 goes mobile. Read more...

Why would a tower defense "offense" game be the perfect inspiration for a beer? Because "warzone," spelled exactly that way, in Polish means "brewed." And the guys behind the Polish-developed Anomaly: Warzone series like to hoist a pint, too. This is Tower Offense Stout—"the very first brand of beer in the world created by game developers for game developers." It was brewed by the wife of one of 11 Bit Studios' developers, herself a brewer (with the lab coat to back it up.) This was a home-brewed batch, yielding about 40 bottles says 11 Bit (must have been some spillage during racking and bottling.) Sounds like it spent the better part of two months finishing. ‘Anomaly’ remains a word my brain doggedly refuses to spell right, but fortunately the little red squiggly line in my word processor always knows what to do. One day we’ll hire that guy, or girl. We’re equal squiggly opportunities here, you know. ‘Anomaly’ is also the first word in the name of the upcoming sequel to 11-Bit Studios’ inverted tower defence game, Anomaly: Warzone Earth. The sensibly subtitless Anomaly 2 arrives in just over a fortnight, on May 15, and while we usually don’t post about preorder incentives because it’s a slightly different weapon or a stupid hat or just being bullied by the man in Gamestop, when it’s a free extra copy of the game it’s rather less slight, stupid or bullying. It’s still bloody preordering, of course, and you wouldn’t preorder a car. You wouldn’t preorder a handbag. You wouldn’t preorder a television. You wouldn’t preorder a movie. Actually, people probably do pre-order all those things, don’t they? Political correctness gone mad, I call it.(more…)

The greatest horror to befall popular culture in the last decade is not Michael Bublé, as is commonly believed. It is another Michael B entirely, and one infinitely more dangerous. Michael Bay’s Transformers movies were, somehow, some of the biggest box-office grossing movies of all time, you see. This means a generation of young and/or money-hungry creators are convinced that the path to riches is to spiky metal insecty things with pallid neon bits invading cyan-hued American cities, accompanied by a boomy orchestral soundtrack. We’ve just seen it in Crysis 3, and now 11-bit’s tower-defence-in-reverse sequel Anomaly 2‘s at it. It’s not right. Why can’t game artists be inspired by Czech animation, Swedish architecture and Fleetwood Mac instead? I’d play the hell out of a game about asymmetrical clay bears trashing Malmo while Go Your Own Way plays.

BUT ANYWAY. Bayisms aside, the four levels of early Anomaly 2 code I’ve played suggest good things, building upon the RTS aspect of the tower-dodging action.(more…)

Do you remember when 11 Bit Studios opened pre-orders for a game before telling anyone what the game was? Today is the day of the actual announcement, so for anyone who did pre-order, can we have a drumroll please? In fact, hold the drums – let me limber up the old saliva gland and prepare my flute for action. Sit back, listen up and prepare yourself for the grand reveal. Oh, cock, I gave it away in the headline didn’t I? It’s Anomaly 2, a sequel to the tower-defence-in-reverse game that Jim enjoyed back in the day. Trailer below.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth will be available on North America's PlayStation Network this Tuesday, September 11, developer 11 bit studios has told Joystiq. The game's European PlayStation Network launch on August 28 marked its fifth platform release, having originally launched for PC and OSX back in April of 2011.

Since then, Anomaly: Warzone Earth has been ported to iOS, Android, XBLA and now finally PSN, which is basically the gaming equivalent of an EGOT. Except, you know, not. Anomaly Korea, a sequel to the mobile versions of the game, is currently under development and should be out around late October or early November.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth has seen success on XBLA, PC and mobile devices, with a PSN launch incoming, allowing 11 bit studios to explore other genres with rapid proficiency. The developer showed us three of its coming titles at Gamescom, each one emphasizing variety and high-quality design on mobile devices.

Funky Smugglers has players pick illegal items off a line of fresh thugs as they pass through an airport X-ray machine, and is headed to iOS, Android and Mac in September. The touchscreen versions allow five-finger swipes, and the game is cross-platform, with multiplayer and an in-game currency focused on visual customization. 11 bit is still deciding on a price, but is considering a freemium model or selling Funky Smugglers for a small fee.

Sleepwalker's Journey will be the following title for iOS, Android and Mac, planned for a launch in October. It's a puzzle platformer in a bright, dreamy art style, with players moving platforms to get a sleepwalker across the landscape. Sleepwalker's Journey channels Braid, allowing players to rewind time if they fail or want to try a particular move again, and with three worlds and 45 levels total, there appears to be plenty to do in dreamland. 11 bit hasn't yet decided on a price.

Anomaly Korea is a sequel to the mobile version of Warzone Earth, hitting iOS and Android in late October or early November, 11 bit hopes. It features Captain Evans and Lieutenant Park running through 12 campaign levels, with a new Boost ability and a new enemy unit.

Check out some screenshots and video of Anomaly Korea, Funky Smugglers and Sleepwalker's Journey below.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth is set to launch digitally on the PS3 on August 29 in Europe, for €8.99, and some time in September for the US, 11 bit studios tells Joystiq at Gamescom. The PSN version will be available in seven languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Polish and Russian.

PSN's Warzone Earth introduces local co-op and a new human unit to the franchise. The new unit is called the Chainer, and it charges enemies and blasts them in a chain attack, hitting up to eight at once.

Mobile gaming dev 11 Bit Studios (probably most notable for putting together Anomaly: Warzone Earth for iOS, Android, and the PC) has announced three new titles coming out in the next few months for mobile platforms. First up, Anomaly Korea is another take on the popular reverse tower defense title, featuring new units, new powers, and new levels to battle through.

Funky Smugglers is a colorful, cartoony game that puts the player in the role of a '70s airport security agent, trying to keep crazy characters from sneaking certain items past the checkpoint. Sleepwalker's Journey is the last release, a sleepy, artistic puzzle platforming game that has you guiding a "Moonboy" through a fantasy world.

11 Bit promises more information on all of these games at Gamescom next week, so we'll look for that then.

Hello everyone, Paweł Miechowski from 11 bit studios here to tell you about our original strategy game Anomaly: Warzone Earth, which is due on PlayStation Network before the end of summer.

Anomaly is truly… an anomaly. It’s a strategy game perfectly suited for console gaming. Let me explain how that works. In the near future, an alien spaceship crashes on Earth and splits into two separate parts. One falls to Baghdad, while the other lands in Tokyo. A huge dome emerges above each site, separating the cities from the outside world. No one knows what’s going on inside, so the domes become known as Anomalies.

You play as the Commander, sent on a mission to investigate what’s happened at the Baghdad Anomaly. Once inside, you discover alien war machines destroying everything in their path.

7643781924_b1a2d11b83_z.jpg7643782554_3aed7c0e34_z.jpg

Essentially, Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a “tower offense” game, tipping the tower defense genre on its head. Rather than managing units to fight off invading forces, you take control of the attackers, creating and controlling your armored troops. The game will be familiar to fans of the top-down RTS genre, but it also adds its own unique features, like a Tactical View where you plan for upcoming assaults.

To make a strategy game work well on console, we’ve put you — the Commander — straight into the thick of the conflict to emphasize the action element. You control him directly, supporting the squad in battle with a variety of abilities. For example, Repair lets you heal units, while Smoke Screen lays down cover for them.

One really cool feature in the PS3 version is an exclusive local co-op mode which allows two Commanders to support each other in battle. One is responsible for controlling the armor units while the other plans the strategy. Both get into the action and are able to boost their abilities in the battle. This new feature increases the pace of the game, making it even more frantic.

No platform is safe, as 11 bit studios has announced the PS3 is the latest to have Anomaly: Warone Earth occupy its virtual halls. The new addition for the PS3 port is local co-op play, allowing one player to act as the strategist and one to act as the unit commander - see it in action in the video above.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth is expected to launch on PSN sometime this summer; though no exact release date has been finalized yet, 11 bit studios will showcase the PS3 port at this year's Gamescom.

GOG.com, purveyor of fine vintage software (and, recently, more modern fare), has added a trio of games to its DRM-free service, including Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Developed by Ion Storm Inc., the third installment in the celebrated stealth series sees master thief Garrett embroiled in a terrible prophecy. The only means of escape lies in unrestrained pickpocketing, merciless guard-clubbing and at least one jaunt through a place so scary, you'll Alt-Tab out of the game and look for reprieve on Reddit.

Oh, and two more: You may now possess Ubisoft's, Tom Clancy's, Clint Hocking's Splinter Cell; and Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the reverse tower defense game that was most recently ported to Xbox Live Arcade.

All three games are available for $9.99 each.

Filed under: Reviews, Microsoft Xbox 360 In the year 2018, what initially appears to be a comet crashes into Baghdad with seismic force. Just like that, Earth has been invaded. Anomaly: Warzone Earth tells the story of the brave members of the fourteenth platoon, the military group that responds to the disaster first and (with any luck) the group that will still be around to fire the final shot.
Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a tower defense game in reverse. As events unfold, aliens have set up encampments and Earth's soldiers are the new invaders. Towers and turrets dot the landscape. Extraterrestrial vessels hover over scorched soil and the remnants of apartments and office buildings. The loss of human lives is palpable. Now soldiers must take back each captured zone by bringing the fight to the aliens.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the "reverse tower defense" game of disabling defenses around alien spacecraft (and the game with the most "three random nouns stuck together" title since Sniper: Ghost Warrior) is heading to XBLA on April 6, perfectly situated within the announced "spring" release window. It'll cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10), itself an anomaly in a sea of $15 games.

Speaking of anomalies, check out the trailer above, released in honor of the XBLA release date announcement.

…Which I don’t say to demean the fine contents of the latest Humble offering, but simply because there are slightly fewer games than usual, plus it’s primarily an Android phone offering, albeit with PC/smug expensive PC/beardy defensive PC versions of the contents also available. Which is, of course, why I’m ppsting it. They’re calling it the most cross-platformish bundle they’ve even done. Contents this time around are:

Anomaly: Warzone Earth (reverse tower defence), Osmos (cellular absorption puzzler), and EDGE (cubist physics puzzler). Pay over the average – currently in the $10 zone – and you’ll get World of Goo too.

That's right, you can download Anomaly: Warzone Earth on the Kindle Fire. If you've got an Android tablet sporting 2.3 or higher, it should also be compatible with your non-Kindle Fire thingamabob, too. All you need to do is install the Amazon App Store and cough up $3.99.

More impressive than Anomaly: Warzone Earth's debut on a yet another platform is how it made its way over to Android in the first place: one guy. It took 11 bit studios' lead programmer Bartosz Brzostek two weeks (and a lot of coffee) to port the iOS version over to Android. Dude's got skills!

Hmm, you're still here. We honestly hoped that would work, but we suppose we can deign to sell you on the idea a little bit. So, for starters, Anomaly Warzone Earth is an excellent blend of futuristic tower defense and real-time strategy, but that's old news. The big story is that the formerly iPad-only game is now a Universal app. Better yet, it's on sale for $2! So, what are you waiting for?

... Oh, the name? Yeah, we're sorry about that. We've begged them to change it. But c'mon, you're gonna have to meet us halfway here.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth launched back in April for the PC (feel free to give the demo a download, if you're so inclined). But it's coming to iPad in four to six weeks, and at last week's EA Summer Showcase day I got a chance to see how the transition was going.

It's no surprise that tower defense games really lend themselves to being played on a touch-screen interface. Poking and prodding to move troops around and interact with the game world make those games a cinch to play. As I learned from my time with Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the same is true for tower offense games as well.

A demo for the Mac and PC versions of Anomaly: Warzone Earth has arrived on Steam, where the game is currently available for the sale price of $8.99. Anomaly: Warzone Earth is the first game from 11 bit studios, which was formed by former CD Projekt and Metropolis Software veterans.

It's a tower defense game that plays out in reverse -- you're planning the attackers' routes around preset enemies, balancing the resources of your team against the forces out to destroy you. We think it's pretty neat, but you can try the four-mission sample for yourself right here.
