Battlefield 3 Message Board older than one year ago

I have, I must admit, spent a worrisome number of hours pondering the exact nature of the phrase “Armored Kill.” Is it a kill you score while wearing armor – perhaps in the fashion of a medieval knight who’d rather die than admit that, yeah, that’s a tank? Or is the kill itself – the very act of forcibly removing another man from his mortal coil – clad in some form of armor? Am I, say, throwing pieces of armor at my unsuspecting foes, sort of like a weaponized Super Ghosts ‘n’ Ghouls? Or maybe I’m simply kill armor that’s, like, been possessed by a ghost or something. Maybe it turns out there was no ghost at all, but that it was in fact Old Man Jenkins clearly running out of ideas. Fortunately, EA’s sent along a new trailer of Battlefield 3: Armored Kill in which all questions are answered. (Hint: there are tanks. So I was sort of basically entirely correct. Yep.)

Just in case you thought I was pulling your leg/was a gullible tool when we posted about the apparent leak of Battlefield 4, EA have stopped pretending it didn’t happen and officially ‘fessed up. They’ve confirmed that, yes, people who pre-order Medal of Honor: Man Who Fights Wars will get priority access to the beta of the next Battlefield, and that’s scheduled for ‘Fall 2013.’ Which I’d be willing to guess suggests a release date of October or November 2013, as has been EA and Activision manshoot tradition for many years now. But I might be wrong. I often am. Why, I was wrong about something only yesterday.

DICE have tried to allay fears this could mean BF3 gets dropped like a hot starchy vegetable product by taking to Reddit and declaring that ” “There are several teams at DICE. Starting work on Battlefield 4 does not mean that we will be abandoning Battlefield 3 or working any less hard to bring you the best expansions we can.” They (by which I mean BF3 community manager Ian Tornay) also addresses the issue of BF4 seeming to be uncomfortably hot on the heels of BF3 in the eyes of some.(more…)

Battlefield 3 will implement a feature called Matches, allowing players to coordinate competitive multiplayer games with a specific set of friends and squad members for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. To set up a match, players must first be actively renting a dedicated server. They can then set up a custom match, choosing name, time, game mode, team size and maps through Battlelog.

Matches are completely customizable but will start players in a warm-up phase, a no-count playthrough that lasts until everyone signals they are ready to start the real game. Matches mode doesn't have a release date yet, but we can hope it's not anywhere near dry brush or tinder. The Battlefield Blog says to stay tuned for more information.

While many Americans plan to celebrate their country's independence on July 4 with some cold brews and succulent BBQ, EA is making a case for staying indoors and playing Battlefield 3. The XP faucet is being turned on for Premium subscribers all week, and non-paying members get a bonus too.

Premium folks get the best part of the deal, naturally - all points earned will be doubled until July 8 at 11:59pm PT. Standard Battlefield 3 players may only enjoy the doubled end-match points until July 4 at 1pm PT, which actually turns out to be pretty decent timing. That's usually when Uncle Hank comes over with the real fireworks.

While knee-jerk analysts (the same ones who incorrectly declared Facebook gaming was a gold rush for all and sundry) at micro-conferences attended only by a minute echo chamber fragment of the games industry ritually declare that free to play is the only possible future of videogames, any number of other business models arrive, persist and grow. Free to play will expand, of that I have no doubt, but that’s not going to prevent a plurality of ways to acquire games. Bundles and crowdsourcing are the two most notable of the last year, while Sony’s shock purchase of Gaikai today suggests we’re about to see a whole lot more cloud-streamed (i.e. rented) gaming doing the mainstream rounds. Another latter-day content-flogging technique is subscriptions for multiplayer games – not MMOs, but the ‘games as service’ mentality that sees new content regularly generated for popular titles.(more…)

Dedicated Battlefield 3 players might have planned on playing this weekend, and following through with that intention will net you sweet bonus points. For this weekend only - starting at 12:01am PT on Saturday and lasting until 11:59pm PT on Sunday - all Battlefield 3 players will earn double their end-round score.

This promotion applies to both Premium and non-Premium members - if you plunked down the cash for Premium, you'll also find double the points awaiting you in Close Quarters. You'll find double points spread across every map and every game mode, so long as you're playing on a ranked server.

See some of the new content that is coming to Battlefield 3 Premium subscribers

So yes, Battlefield 3 Premium is a thing. It costs $50, and for that you get early access to all five expansion packs – Armoured Kill, Aftermath, and End Game are appearing between now and March 2013 – as well as “exclusive in-game items”, exclusive events, and a lot of other stuff – double XP events and “tactics? And does all that add up to a new game’s worth of stuff? EA certainly seem to think so. Because I think I’d want a new game for that much cash. But perhaps I’m wrong, perhaps this is an essential purchase for the Battlefield 3 legions? Those expansions are certainly promising a lot of stuff – weapons, 20 maps, new vehicles and so on… Are you going to buy it? To the commentmobile!

Today, we have some Battlefield 3 news for you straight from this year’s Electronic Arts press conference at E3.

On stage at E3, DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach unveiled a whole year of great Battlefield 3 content. If you didn’t catch the press conference yourself, we’ve got the details for you right here!

Our biggest news is the launch of our massive content offer, Battlefield 3 Premium. If you buy Battlefield 3 Premium, you’ll also be able to download and play our latest expansion pack Close Quarters today. That’s two weeks earlier than non-Premium members on PlayStation 3, and one week earlier than Premium members on other platforms thanks to the early access that PlayStation 3 players are getting!

So what does Premium get you? Well, purchasing Premium will give you all five themed expansion packs for Battlefield 3, including two weeks’ early access (except – of course – for the Back to Karkand pack that we released in December last year!). You’ll also get a number of unique in-game items, like the new ACB-90 knife, a set of Premium dog tags, weapon camos, soldier camos and more.

At E3 today, we also showed the complete line-up of expansion packs for Battlefield 3.

1. Back to Karkand

Giving you four fan favorite maps from Battlefield 2 with enhanced destruction (Strike at Karkand, Sharqi Peninsula, Gulf of Oman, and Wake Island) and 10 new weapons, this expansion pack also offers new vehicles like the US VTOL fighter jet, new Assignments, Trophies, and dog tags

2. Close Quarters

Close Quarters brings the Battlefield indoors. The shift in environment means gameplay is fast and frantic, combining instant-action with the tactical squad play Battlefield has always been known for. Four new maps are included, and Close Quarters also adds what we’re calling “HD Destruction” – meaning you can destroy just about everything in the game by firing your normal rifle bullets at them

3. Armored Kill

Coming September 2012
In September, it’s all out vehicle warfare. Armored Kill includes four new maps (including the biggest Battlefield map ever) and a number of new vehicles including tank destroyers (a new tank class somewhere in-between Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Main Battle Tanks), mobile artillery, an ATV and an all-new gunship.

You could be watching news about Battlefield 3, or you could be playing it. Peter Moore and Patrick Bach just revealed the launch date for Battlefield 3 Premium, and, for PS3, it's ... "this very second." The $49.99 service, which offers early access to expansions and other content, is live on PS3 now, and will come to PS3 and Xbox sometime next week.

It offers access to five expansions ... one of which has motorcycles.
