First up, does Kid Icarus: Uprising have a nod to Cave Story in it? Listen to this conversation between Pit and Palutena...

I don't know...seems like it works out too nicely to be a coincidence!

Also, there's a sneak peek at some Cave Story figurines on the way. So chunky...so pixelated...so gorgeous...

At the end of the day, Cave Story 3D will most likely appeal primarily to fans of the original willing to experience one of their favourite games in its new form, or collectors of physical copies who wouldn't pass a chance to get their hands on the only retail version of the masterpiece that Cave Story is.

What's Hot: New 3D graphics combined with award winning gameplay, catchy music, huge world to explore, spot-on controls.

What's Not: Dark visuals, more expensive than 2D version.

This remake is a labour of love, and it catches the single most important thing about Cave Story. Objectively, it's a 2D game heavily inspired by Metroid. In its details, and in your hands and head, it's another world entirely.

#cavestory Cave Story already has a pretty damn good soundtrack, but as with all things, it can be improved by being dipped in liquid fire and rendered into heavy metal. Thankfully there's Erik Peabody, who has released his new 7-track album "Made of Metal" upon the world. More »

It's still an amazing game, and it's definitely worth your time and cash, but budget-conscious consumers who prefer an 8-bit look may be better served by picking up the DSiWare version for a fraction of the cost. Either way, every 3DS owner should buy Cave Story. It's one of the best games ever made, in 3D or otherwise.

If you have already spent time with Quote traipsing about the caves, you may find yourself unimpressed. If you’re not familiar with his journey, though, and feel like you’re neglecting your 3DS, I recommend this version.

Cave Story 3D may seem like a tough sell, but when you consider how many people do not connect their systems to the internet, it’s really not. Cave Story is game that every gamer needs to play, and if Cave Story 3D is the most viable method of doing that, so be it. However you get your hands on this game, just do it. It’s that good.

Not even a semi-controversial visual makeover can keep me from loving Cave Story. I admit to being a bit worried upon seeing the first screens of the new 3DS remake, Cave Story 3D, developed by Nicalis in conjunction with original creator Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. And I admit now that the new polygonal graphics lack the extreme charm of the original pixels.

But Cave Story is a wonderful game on any platform, in any configuration. Those new graphics are there to sell the game to non-"core" gamers who see 2D art as archaic, and who have no pre-existing knowledge of the indie game scene or of Cave Story. The game still works with its new look. Besides, I was really, honestly impressed with the redone art in several areas. I enjoyed seeing the game reinterpreted, after seeing the original so, so many times.

Basically, all I can do is encourage you to play Cave Story, regardless of whether you get this version or the DSiWare version (or play it on PC, Mac, WiiWare, etc.) This new remake is, paradoxically, a good choice for neophytes interested in a well-designed shooter/platformer (because of the New Super Mario Bros.-ised graphics), or people who have played Cave Story a billion times (because of the new content and the fresh experience).

Ultimately, Cave Story 3D’s greatest competition… is itself. Cave Story, the DSiWare version, is so reasonably priced and the PC version is free because Amaya just wanted people to enjoy his creation. That generous spirit may make gamers question the value of Cave Story 3D because as a retail game it carries a much higher price tag.

After all these years, it's nice to finally own a physical copy of the game. Cave Story has always been a tribute to gaming's past, so there's something poetic in the game making its way to physical media -- something that will itself be a memory before long.

An email just came in that details some of the brand-new features you'll find in Cave Story 3D...

Egg Corridor Escape
Egg Corridor Escape is an additional annex to the original Egg Corridor 2. This area features a look inside of Egg Corridor with tons of critters and bugs to fight. All players will experience this level.

Life Capsules
The original game had a total of 55 maximum life. We’ve added roughly 40 new Life Capsule to locate and earn, bringing the total number of life to 100

Prinny Cap
Players can find the Prinny cap in a secret stage, which will allow Quote to wear the cap both in 3D mode and Classic Mode!

Cave Story has always been an extremely charming and engaging experience, but never before has the game come alive with the type of depth and realism that the 3D visuals and lighting effects provide. When you couple all of this together with the classic high-quality platforming and shooting action of the original, not to mention an amazing remixed soundtrack, you end up with what has to be one of the most impressive video game remakes we've seen in recent years and a title you absolutely should not miss.

#cavestory I continue to find myself looking forward to Cave Story 3D on the 3DS—something about the game's look seems like it will really lend itself to both portable play and to the 3DS's screen (and hopefully, controls). In fact, I might just be looking forward to this game more than any other upcoming 3DS title except perhaps for Super Mario 3D Land. More »
