Saints Row: The Third is like a doughnut, and I'm trying to decide if that's a good thing. I mean, everybody loves doughnuts -- I know I do. They're fluffy, sometimes sticky and mostly made of sugar and butter, two of the best-tasting foods around. And a proper doughnut, maybe with a morning coffee or during a meeting break, can really hit the spot, giving you that extra burst of energy that you need.

But they're not that good for you. A regular Krispy Kreme alone runs up to 300 calories or more. Doughnuts are great as an occasional pick-me-up, but you'd be in trouble if you started eating nothing but doughnuts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, right?

Which brings us to Saints Row: The Third.

#saintsrow When I saw Saints Row: The Third earlier this year, developer Volition showcased a spectacular bank heist from the game, a carnage-filled showdown with Steelport's SWAT team. It was a bizarre, comedically ultraviolent shootout that played like a major, mid-game highlight. More »

Saints Row The Third – a game that has been distilled from the boiled nightmares of Daily Mail readers – fears nothing in its ambition to mock and satirise the whole of existence. The massive moving targets of the monolithic military shooters that are currently trundling toward us on the hype-train are easy pickings for the Volition crew, as you can see below. Saints Row’s Shock And Awesome trailer is just another reason why this might be worth getting. (Calling in air-strikes while wearing a top hat made it for me.) Stupid. Clever stupid.

When? November 15th for North America, November 18th for the Europe.(more…)

Saints Row the Third tells the tale of a gang of celebrity criminals, The Saints, that are taking over a new city called Steelport. As you might expect, not everyone is thrilled with the Saints' arrival. Both the local criminal organizations and government are determined to send our heroes packing. ...

There are only eleven seconds of actual in-game footage presented in the Saints Row: The Third trailer above, but more incomprehensible things happen in that window than happens during the entirety of most full-length trailers. Its efficiency is astounding.

Saints Row: The Third seems a bit more mad every time I see it and the latest announcement concerning its release is one of the maddest things of all. Showing a keen satirical sensibility, this declaration has emerged from the neon-lit, glitterball-strewn funhouse that is Saints Row HQ:

THQ and Volition announced that the PC version of Saints Row: The Third is scheduled to release exactly when they said it would. Developed in-house at Volition in Champaign, IL and powered by Steam, Saints Row: The Third on PC is not scheduled to be delayed by any unforeseen development problems, shipping issues, inclement weather, or zombie apocalypse. As such, it remains on track for a November 15 release, exactly when we said it would.

In a perfect world, this would not be necessary or amusing, but we live in an imperfect world and those few words sadly show that Volition are paying more attention to their PC audience than some companies seem to do throughout an entire development cycle.(more…)

Unlike Batman: Arkham City and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Saints Row: The Third's PC version has not been "delayed by any unforeseen development problems, shipping issues, inclement weather, or zombie apocalypse," says THQ. Bucking the trend! I like it. [Saints Row] More »

In Saints Row: The Third, a new reality show is sweeping the nation: Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax, or, uh, PGSERC, for short. Despite having "ethical" in the title, it's kinda mostly about hurting people, with shades of "hilarious death and dismemberment" to boot.

Just when it seemed like Saints Row: The Third couldn't get crazier, it absolutely gets a lot crazier. But now, it's on a whole new level of "Shut The Front Door"-ness, adding a cyberworld into the mix -- as seen in the (very NSFW) trailer posted above.

It looks like Volition are not yet finished with their campaign to subvert everyone’s expectations regarding Saints Row: The Third. I thought the craziest it could get is maybe a bigger poo truck than in the second game, but here we see an entire digital world squeezed inside the digital world of Steelport. As Saints Row: The Third’s urban warfare spills over onto the digital cyber-world, it seems like it’s going to take more than just guns, cars and explosives to put the Saints back on top. (more…)

#saintsrow McWhertor told me the other day that when it comes in, I'll be in charge of the review for Saints Row: The Third. Mkay. I suppose I should familiarize myself with this game by watching this trailer. Let's see, we've got gangs, driving sequences, gunplay, cyber-demons with giant swords and Tank Pong from Combat. Nice of Mike to give me the straightforward assignments. More »

A brief “vehicles” trailer for Saints Row: The Third has turned up. It shows off the game’s street-cleaning machine, so that’s good, but it also shows off a hoverbike and what appears to be a rocket-boosted sportscar. It neglects, however, to demo the VTOL jet or the the terrifying pedestrian-launcher thing. I’ve posted the previously revealed (and extensively bananas) game footage which includes those things for good measure.(more…)

THQ CEO Brian Farrell spoke highly of cloud gaming yesterday, which should come as no surprise to anyone who's seen THQ's frequent OnLive deals, or to anyone who knew that he happened to be speaking at the Cloud Gaming USA conference.

Farrell predicted that a move to discless, all-digital game distribution "will result in a lower cost for the hardware manufacturer, which will result in a lower cost to consumers and therefore a lower entry point, thus driving more mass market adoption." It's something he sees not just PC-based services, but consoles doing as well -- though he didn't really specify "cloud" there vs. just downloading games.

And speaking of downloading content, Saints Row: The Third is going to have some -- a lot, actually. Farrell said that the game would be followed by roughly 40 weeks of DLC. "We totally change how we keep consumer engaged for a very long time," Farrell said. "We intend to create an online digital ecosystem that keeps them interested for a year or more." It's the same kind of approach THQ tried with MX vs. ATV Alive, except without the base game having reduced content to start -- or a reduced price.

"What we found was unlike free to play, $39.99 [the budget-level price of MX vs. ATV] just wasn't low enough to drive a big enough install base to push the level of DLC we had initially hoped for." It will be interesting to see if that kind of strategy works with a game that is more complete, and fully priced.

It’s hard to separate the reality of playing Saints Row: The Third from what I imagined playing Saints Row: The Third would be like. Because it’s pretty much exactly the same. That is to say, it’s what I remember playing Saints Row 2 was like – time, tall tales and fondness has seen me forget the busywork of the game and recall only the absurdities, the insanity, the just-because rampaging. Saints Row: The Third is all those absurdities pushed to the very front of the game, rather than hung around its sides: thus, it’s the recreation of what we think Saints Row games are rather than what they have been to date.(more…)

Let’s kick off the day with a fresh look at Saints Row: The Third. There’s not a huge dose of the series’ trademark silliness on display here, but I suppose they’ve got to try and sell the game to stern-faced grumpy gamers, without a taste for the absurd, too. I do enjoy how the camera wobbles during the fisticuffs, and I’m looking forwards to having a lot of fun in that VTOL plane. Trailer go: (more…)

We all take freedom for granted but, when you think about it, are any of us really free?

An unqualified "yes" is a lot simpler if you're playing Saints Row: The Third. I've seen it for myself. During my afternoon rendezvous to the city of Steelport, Volition's Drew Holmes riding shotgun on my tear through the gritty streets of the southwest district, I could do almost anything and be anyone.

#saintsrow Saints Row has never been about subtlety and the third installment is no exception. In fact, the amount of wacky action is being pushed past xXx levels. In the newest gameplay video the saints are taken captive aboard a jet. After a few threats, shoots ensue, both in the plane and falling from the sky. You want stupid ridiculous action? Why not fall through a plane just to shoot a few bad guys? Why not indeed. More »

THQ has high hopes for its fiscal Q3 (October through December) this year, this much we all know. And in light of recent disappointments (looking at you, Red Faction Armageddon!), the company has announced that it's shifting its focus away from kids and movie-based licensed titles, closing down two development studios in Australia and nixing its Phoenix-based development team. Overall, 200 people have gotten the axe, though they're able to apply for other vacant THQ positions.

THQ's five main studios will continue working on their own projects: THQ Montreal will continue to work on Patrice Désilets' unannounced game; Volition will continue work on Saints Row: The Third and its collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, inSANE; Relic's getting ready to launch Space Marine; Vigil is busy with Darksiders 2 and its MMO, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online; and THQ San Diego will continue to handle the WWE All-Stars series.

Finally, like Red Faction before it, THQ will hang up the MX vs ATV series -- the latest entry (obviously) didn't do so well.
