On paper, I should be in love with Galaga Legions DX. I'm into 2D shooters, retro games, pixel graphics, and heated leaderboard competition. Galaga Legions DX has all of this, but it's missing something more important: hooks. It doesn't get its hooks in me...

Galaga Legions DX is now available on the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system for $9.99. Developed by the team behind last year's award-winning hit, PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX, Galaga Legions DX drops players in the middle of the largest Galaga armada ever assembled and the most chaotic space war imaginable...

Namco has released a deluxe version of Galaga Legions, but does this new bug have the same bite as the classic that swept arcades all those years ago?

When it was originally released in 1981, Galaga set the bar for top-down shooters. Having improved on Galaxian's original design, the game revolutionized the genre, found multinational success, and has since been ported to over 21 different consoles, spawning 4 sequels along the way. Galaga is one of the forefathers of modern shooters, and is arguably one of the most important games of all time.

Namco Bandai's Galaga Legions DX is the latest addition to the legacy, and despite small nostalgic touches scattered throughout the UI, the game eschews the majority of its heritage and forges a path between two strikingly different genres of contemporary shooters: "Twin-stick" and "bullet-hell." The result is, sadly, a bit of a mess.

Joining its high-speed hijinks are the bone-crushing antics of BackBreaker Vengeance, and the bug-blasting battles of Galaga Legions DX. Check out the latest XBLA in Brief to see if either one is up your alley. Spoiler: Both of them take significantly longer than half a minute.

Back in November of last year, Namco Bandai realized that what the Galaga series actually needs is neon lights and 400 trillion more aliens. Since then, the masochistic bullet-hell fanatics in Joystiq's Controller Destruction And Frustration Management Department have been anxiously awaiting Galaga Legends DX, the latest title in Namco Bandai's "Namco Generations" series of classic updates. If you've been sustaining yourself on what few morsels have been released so far, take solace in knowing that your wait will soon be at its end: Andriasang reports that DX will hit XBLA on June 29th for 800 Microsoft Points.

Hop past the jump for the latest trailer, which details your ship's new "Diffuse Fire" technique. Said ability should provide a strategic advantage compared to the Focus Fire technique seen in the last trailer. Sadly, the PSN version is still officially listed as TBD, so xenophobic PlayStation users may have to wait a bit longer to explode their way through space.

The last trailer to feature Galaga Legions DX was pretty unsatisfying -- a few seconds of DX at the end of a minute-and-a-half of previous Galagas. This new trailer cuts all the unnecessary stuff and just gets to the bullet-hell-with-bugs insanity that is DX.

The trailer demonstrates "Focus Fire," which appears to be a system for cutting through hordes of enemies to get to the core -- though there's so much going on, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what "Focus Fire" could be referring to. The trailer also shows a lot of shooting in different directions from your ship. It kind of looks like DX is a twin-stick shooter! We'd say we're uncomfortable with the change, but its Namco Generations contemporary, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, has taught us to trust Namco on these things.
