While most of the United States has been climbing out of a deep freeze, MonkeyPaw Games has been working at fever pitch to bring together something that celebrates cool, funky, awesome and frequently requested retro games on PlayStation Store.

We wanted to do something big for the New Year, so starting tomorrow the MonkeyPaw Games Retro Rush will be on! What’s the Retro Rush? Each week, for six weeks, we’ll be releasing a new import PSone Classic on PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PSP. We are going to highlight games from all kinds of genres, and it will all lead up to a game that PSone Classic fans have been anticipating for a long time. What does the schedule look like? Look no further!

  • January 14th – Double Dragon
  • January 21st – Lucifer Ring
  • January 28th – The Firemen 2: Pete and Danny
  • February 4th – Hyper Crazy Climber
  • February 11th – Wolf Fang
  • February 18th – Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return

Kicking off the Retro Rush is Double Dragon. You might remember Billy and Jimmy from their side-scrolling days but we are importing the fighting game that is based on the Double Dragon movie from the 90’s. You might not have heard about this game because it was never released outside of Japan even though the movie was made in Hollywood.

The roster gets filled out with beautifully animated sprite-based characters like Abobo, Marian and a host of other characters to keep the punches flying. With 12 characters in total, special charge moves and transformations, there is a lot of game to discover and master.

This is only the beginning of the Retro Rush from MonkeyPaw Games. We’ll have more information about the second title, Lucifer Ring, next week. In the meantime, drop us a line on Twitter and let us know about some of your favorite classic gaming memories.

Double Dragon: Neon appeared on consoles in 2012, riding a skateboard and juggling nunchakus while spraypainting ‘cowabunga’ onto an abandoned subway train. Now, a trailer plucked from a less bleak version of 1984 brings news that the co-op side-scrolling brawler will be arriving on Steam ‘soon’. The Blood Dragon of the Double Dragon franchise, Neon recognises the silliness of Billy and Jimmy’s adventures, takes a look in the mirror, and laughs long and hard at its own reflection.

Those with serious nostalgia for this will find some modicum of enjoyment from Double Dragon, but all other players should take heed before purchasing and await the inevitable release of superior beat-em-ups on Virtual Console. Kick this one to the curb.

Double Dragon manages to be pretty solid even when it's been reduced to "single dragon." But in hindsight, the elements Technos added to compensate for the game's compromised design seem more interesting as a historical curiosity than as riveting additions.

Mobile retrogaming specialist DotEmu has released its arcade beat-'em-up compilation Double Dragon Trilogy for iOS and Android devices, following up on its previous mobile ports of R-Type and Out of This World.

The collection includes the original arcade version of Double Dragon, along with its coin-op sequels Double Dragon 2: The Revenge and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. All games offer optional remixed soundtracks, Bluetooth-enabled co-op and controller support, and a new "mobile" difficulty mode that tones down the quarter-munching challenge of the arcade originals.

Bear in mind that the arcade version of Double Dragon 3 is completely different from the widely hated NES version, but it's arguably just as bad; among other things, it served as an early progenitor of paid DLC, requiring players to insert additional quarters for weapons and other in-game bonuses. Fortunately, the mobile version lets you feed its virtual arcade machine with as many credits as you want, making the game a breeze.

Retrogaming emulation specialist DotEmu revealed that it will bring the classic arcade beat-'em-ups Double Dragon, Double Dragon 2: The Revenge, and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone to iOS and Android devices in the upcoming mobile compilation Double Dragon Trilogy.

The package will include faithful ports of all three games in their original quarter-munching glory, along with a new "Story" mode that awards bonus unlockables and achievements as players progress through the trilogy. A new mobile-specific difficult mode tones down the brutality for players who struggle with touchscreen controls, while Original and Expert difficulty modes are also available for series veterans.

Other bonus features include gamepad support, optional remixed soundtracks, and Bluetooth co-op play. Double Dragon Trilogy is set to launch via the iTunes App Store and Google Play by the end of the year.

Classic 2D arcade platformers, brawlers and beat 'em ups can have amazing background art—with pixel perfect details and a wonderful color palette. Unlike the similarly awesome 2D fighter backgrounds, people don't pay as much attention to these. Looking through 2D arcade game backgrounds, it's funny to see how the artists were so into dodgy city districts that are so characteristic to the 90s. But for me, the best part is finding the small details—whether it's an easter egg or a hidden tiny item. #totalrecall I've forgotten most of the things I read in video game instruction manuals when I was a kid. But one thing I read in the instruction manual for the Commodore 64 version of Double Dragon stuck with me. More »

Somehow, when we weren't looking, Majesco got hold of the Double Dragon franchise, and then turned it over to its Bloodrayne Betrayal partner WayForward Technologies. The result is Double Dragon: Neon, a side-scrolling brawler in a totally '80s setting.

This time, twins Billy and Jimmy Lee are fighting to save Marian from "Skullmageddon," who, judging from concept art, has an army of wizards, cyborg police, and Linda. It's scheduled for release on PSN (for PS3) and XBLA this July. Is "downloadable, high-definition 2D franchise revival from WayForward and Majesco" going to become an annual summer tradition? We'd be okay with that.

One of the best-known and most well-loved beat-'em-up games ever made, Double Dragon helped define what the brawler genre would become when it first arrived as a coin-operated arcade cabinet in the late '80s. It told the story of twin brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, working together to punch and kick ...

What's Hot: Classic Double Dragon gameplay, familiar music.

What's Not: Too short to pay $3.99, no two-person co-op.

We know what you're thinking: "I sure do love Double Dragon on my iPhone, but I wish the lights in Stage 5 were slightly higher, and the hit-box on this whip a bit longer." A beautiful dream, right? Wrong. A beautiful reality.

Brizo Interactive has peered into the minds of Dragons everywhere and released an update for its remake of yesteryear's classic beat-em-up, based on your wants and needs. In addition to moving the lights in Stage 5 "slightly higher," Brizo has also added support for iOS versions older than 4.0, "adjusted CPU and memory consumption," and added a transparency option for the game's touch controls, among other adjustments. Sometimes dreams really do come true.

A portion of a Nintendo Life review… …at the cheaper price point of £2.70 this is an offering that may appeal to fans of the series or genre. Overall this a short yet sweet experience.
